Maybe this comment will save someone multiple trips to the dentist and thousands of dollars in crowns and dental implants. I was drinking 6 or more cans of diet soda everyday for a few years as a crutch for curbing a sweet tooth while eating healthy. The dentist kept asking me if I was throwing up a lot because of all the acid erosion on my teeth and they ordered me a mouth guard because I must be grinding my teeth at night because so many were destroyed. I was drinking so many diet sodas and the acid just eroded my teeth. In hindsight a rinse of water or some xylitol gum could have probably fixed it. I need like 6 crowns now because of all the damage and each one is like 2 grand. I pretty much quit diet sodas cold turkey from being so disappointed about my teeth but I wish I woulda just done it reasonably and rinsed at I could still enjoy them. I Love diet soda );

My family drinks plenty of water. It's the preferred drink in the house. All my kids, my fiance, and myself all get headaches from diet drinks. Kinda weird how it's so rare, yet we ALL have the same issue with it. What's really interesting is that the people I do know that regularly drink diet sodas are obese and DONT drink enough water. Actually, they have the opinion that "water is nasty." Just because your body can eventually learn to tolerate it doesn't mean you should drink it regularly. It's like cigarettes. One here and there isn't bad, but daily, it becomes a problem. He himself admitted we don't have enough data YET to confirm the actual causes on the body. Enjoy it, though 👍

@jon6car My point was his claim about rarity. I can't be that rare when he's heard it himself as a common argument, and yet my entire family and my fiance, who has no family history linked to my own, has that same issue. Basically, people who don't drink soda have issues with consuming it. He said it himself, "ease" your way into drinking it. Did we not watch the same video? He made 2 very telling statements. The first statement was that we don't have enough data to assess the long-term risk. The second statement was the fact that if your body couldn't handle it, to EASE your way to a level of tolerance. He gave the ridiculous story of eating 4 quest bars in a sitting. I understand people enjoy things that aren't necessarily healthy, but let's not pretend it's "good" for you either.

One main danger of sodas is their low pH and it’s effect on your teeth. In dental school, so this is a concern. If you’re sipping on soda throughout the day, your mouth stays acidic and this will erode your enamel, and thus leave it quite susceptible to decay. Try and rinse your mouth with water after drinking if possible, and drink while eating to lessen the total time your mouth is exposed to it.

@TrevorHamberger27 күн бұрын
@ag4p the only reason aspartame exists is to trick your brain into thinking and that inedible cardboard tastes like heaven. The only foods that contain aspartame are literally inedible cardboard if not for the aspartame and the other toxic ingredients making that inevitable cardboard seem like it tastes good
@lemealun25 күн бұрын
@@ag4p In 2023, the IARC, which is part of the WHO, classified aspartame as a Group 2B carcinogen. Meaning it’s carcinogenic. And where the hell did I say sugar is better? What kind of reading comprehension level are you at? moderation is key with natural ingredients but hey if you wanna get pumped with chemicals go right ahead.
@ag4p25 күн бұрын
@@lemealun The IARC declared it as a "possible carcinogen" based on "limited evidence" it "might" cause liver cancer. Meanwhile, excess sugar is known to cause diabetes. Sugar is a chemical btw, aspartame just sounds scarier because sugar isn't called sucrose. Everything is made of chemicals and when you complain about chemicals like this it's just a naturalistic fallacy. Would you rather drink tap water (unnatural) which has been filtered or natural pure raw water from a river infected with cholera? Both natural and artificial things can be bad. Cancer itself is literally a natural process. Disease is natural. Antibiotics aren't natural. Mass manufacturing isn't natural. Surgery isn't natural. Most if not all disasters caused by artificial things can be attributed to negligence. Think teflon, it's harmless on your non stick pan but when forever chemicals contaminate the local water supply suddenly you've given a shit ton of people chronic illnesses, and the manufacturer knew the whole time because of their internal studies that it caused birth defects and death when they laced employee cigarettes and women on the manufacturing line gave birth to kids with horrific birth defects. When people are looking for aspartame to be harmful and find nothing but an abundance of evidence that it's done no wrong or outcomes difficult to attribute to typical human consumption it should be considered vastly less dangerous than shit people do everyday that's bad and causes deaths, like driving while tired or living sedentary. An excess of aspartame potentially causing liver toxicity in rats is not cause for concern when obesity and insulin resistance definitively kill way more people than the zero attributed to aspartame. Radiation causes cancer but getting an xray is more likely to save your life than the chances of the exposure ever coming close to harming you in any meaningful way.

Which studies and who paid for them?
@ag4p27 күн бұрын
Metastudies show that aspartame is safe, aspartame is one of the most studied chemicals ever, and just because a study receives funding does not imply the scientists involved are committing scientific fraud nor remove any normal peer review steps. Also, it's equally possible a lot of research could be funded by cane sugar industries hoping to find out that aspartame is harmful. Metastudies are reviews of all prior research and finding out what research shows what, the implications, reputability, accuracy of reproducibility between studies, etc. So maybe you can find one study on DOI that shows a terrifying outcome but there's 100 others disqualifying the results and showing it as an outlier, in which case the mountain of evidence discredits the outlier. When you're thinking about stuff like "who is telling me this" it's useful to think about all the market forces involved and whether it makes reasonable sense for a conspiracy to be orchestrated and who all would need to be involved. Maybe one company would benefit from consumers thinking one thing but a competing industry would have an incentive to uncover this type of plot.

Good :D That's one of the biggest misconceptions about diet soda and it's kinda frustrating honestly. Nothing on you of course. The people who are switching to diet soda, the people who need to switch and are scared because of cancer, are the people like myself that exclusively drink soda. We don't drink water and if we do, it's maybe a bottle, or less a day. We drink 5-6 cans of soda. We drink sugary juices, chocolate milk, sweet tea and so forth. We aren't in a debate of what's better, diet soda or water. Everyone will admit water. The only question is whether diet soda is better than the sugary, high fructose corn syrup alternatives. Growing up, I wish my parents made me drink more water because as an adult, it's hard enough forcing myself to drink 1 bottle of water a day and we all know that's just a fraction of how much water I should really be drinking.

What I have read is that diet sodas may cause similar insulin level spikes as regular soda. Blood Sugar has no positive correlation to this - if anything it should be negative, since insulin removes sugar from blood by allowing your cells to consume it. A diabetic, especially a type 1 diabetic doing testing for this would make no sense, since their bodies can no longer produce any insulin anyway! Anyway, the potential danger is developing insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes). There is no health benefit to drinking sodas, so I would only do it sparingly and only if it makes you really happy.

So glad you addressed this. I have been a diet soda drinker since my youth (and recently zero sugar varieties because it's marketed that way now lol). I was a hyper kid and my parents only ever let me have diet soda when I did drink them. When I got older and had sugared soda, I found it actually upset my stomach big time so I don't even like it. The humor is not lost on me when I order 18 chicken wings with a diet soda. No I'm not doing it for health reasons. Regular soda fucking sucks, and yes it is categorically much, much worse for you than diet soda. As someone who has researched this topic deeply for the better part of 12 years, I will add in my findings: 1. Regular soda has tons of sugar, calories, and sodium. Diet/zero sugars do not. Excess sugar, sodium and calorie consumption have been directly linked to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and many other ailments. With sugar in particular, you accelerate the decay of tooth enamel and are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure. These are undeniable facts. 2. Unlike with artificial sweeteners in diet sodas, they have not been linked to any serious health issues and are widely researched. The cancer misinformation has been completely debunked for years. The gut accusations are wildly exaggerated. And the long term effects of regular artificial sweetener consumption has shown time and time again in studies that's it's perfectly fine in moderation. 3. What is moderation? For aspartame to be reach dangerous levels in a normal human, you would need to consume on average 20 or more diet sodas every single day. Or dozens and dozens of individual sweetener packs per day. I don't think anyone is hitting those numbers on the reg. Have your diet or zero sugar soda and be proud of it. 4. Diet sodas do not cause cravings or increased appetite. Yes people drinking diet soda can eat more in general because they aren't consuming additional calories with their drink while they're eating. Then those calories can easily exceed what would be in a sugared soda but this is not really a serious concern. You can still absolutely get full and feel satiated drinking diet soda no matter what food you're eating. And the blood sugar drop from a sugared soda is much more likely to lead to a craving after eating a meal than any reduced intake of calories from a diet soda during the meal will. 5. If anyone tells you diet soda is worse for you than regular soda, their credibility on anything health related is dog shit. They are wrong. Diet sodas aren't good for you, no, but regular soda is empirically worse for you. Water, it turns out, is really good for you. And there are a lot of amazing sparkling water flavors out there now. Waterloo is one of my favorite brands. Happy drinking.
