The fact that I think most of us, me included, can’t settle on one model is the absolute genius of Victorinox. I don’t know if it was intentional on their part but I think even if you could have them build you a knife that you designed I still wouldn’t be satisfied because sometimes I like the cellidor and other times Alox. And even though I like the backside tools nothing beats the snap of those 93’s! It just makes life fun trying to decide on one haha. Most of the time it’s my Blue Farmer with a red cellidor Rambler.

I've had a Motorist model since the late 1970s. The file is worn smooth, the scissors are dull, and the awl is blunt. The blades still feel like they're brand new, though. But I'm not sending it to the factory for rejuvenation. In 2000, I retired it and bought a Spirit multitool. But I missed having the knife. My favourite now would be the Deluxe Tinker, but I came across a Swiss Champ on sale for 2/3 the price of the Deluxe Tinker. Couldn't turn it down. It's huge, heavy, and looks a bit silly in an office. But it is so useful I can't bring myself to let it sit in a drawer. So I carry the Spirit and the Champ. Then I wonder wy my daily pack is getting heavy...

Spirit X with the Compact (or Explorer,or Climber,or Alox Electrician,or Super Tinker,or even Tinker) are a much better and lighter combo! I choose Spirit X with the Explorer for Urban edc and for the outdoors,111mm Rucksack or Alox Harvester.

That's funny... I do the same thing, standing over the shelf in my man-cave where most of my SAKs live, for several minutes trying to pick one for the day. These days, Ive been wishing I could carry em all, so since I carry a Leatherman wave, with those great pliers, I wind up carrying one of my Champions to cover all bases. If I'm not packing a Leatherman for some reason, I grab a Swisschamp and call it done. Great video, thanks for sharing!

I know what you mean about just standing in a stooper. It happens to me all the time. I love collecting knives and I initially became enamored with knives back in the late 80s. My first love was a Swiss army Victorinox Champ. I was 12, I gave it up after I sliced my hand with it while peeling an apple and watching a ninja move. I recently rediscovered Victorinox knives and am starting to collect them again. Great video! thanks for sharing.

My solution to the problem was to carry a Swiss Champ when I was a kid and my car was always breaking down (in the sixties you could actually pull off a temporary fix for many problems on the side of the road). I continued to carry it through college but it was just too big for an urban desk job. I took stock of all the tools I used and never used; then found a knife with what I needed. For me, it was the Explorer (then the Plus) which I’ve been carrying for decades. The size doesn’t seem to bother me. Hell, I can drop it in the pocket of my sports coats. If you’re wondering why I needed the magnifying glass - I was the go to guy for peoples plant bugs and such. Today, I’m old enough to use it daily for fine print, lol. I also carry a AO blade only like a Kershaw Leek or a CRTK for fast cutting jobs like opening boxes. But I still feel your problem, that’s a way cool collection of SAKS you have there.

Tony Canniffe I always felt the SAK EP needed a wood saw and metal file. I was introduced to Tim Simco on the Facebook group SAKS Exclusively (I think that's his name) and he was at first going to add them to my explorer. Instead, I found new Swiss Champs on Amazon w/o pliers or plus scales (Tim has a channel here on youtube ) for $60 and he's going to take the scales and fish scaler off the champ and add black plus scales that he found on Ebay for $14. The result will be a Explorer Plus in black with plus scales. Scales arrived yesterday , knife should arrive tomorrow and then l ship it all to Tom.

@@greekveteran2715 I was wondering what the Rucksack is, I looked on SAKwiki and see it's been superceded by the Forester, basically the Rucksack was the side-locking version of the Forester which is liner locking. So happy with my Soldier which is also the same but with a Phillips sd instead of corkscrew, it doesn't have toothpick and tweezers, but I love army issue stuff. I take the Soldier when I'm in the outdoors hiking and/or camping, otherwise it's illegal to EDC here in the UK due to the blade being locking and longer than 3in / 7.62cm. I EDC a Farmer or Hiker because I like the saw capability even though I hardly ever need it lol.

@@swissarmydan9354 Top combo, I EDC a Farmer on a suspension clip with keys, and the Classic SD in my coin pocket, primarily for the scissors which are very useful and effective even though they're small, but also I use that small blade a lot, for opening packages.
@greekveteran27153 жыл бұрын
@@simonh6371 Rucksack is completely different knife! It has aluminium liners instead of steel the other 2 models have, also the blade is different and cuts much better than any other model I own. It is also much lighter because of the aluminium, the smaller cup ifter - pry tool, and the locking system which also adds to better handle ergos, that the other 2 models lack. I prefer the Rucksack and the Harvester! Rucksack is the King in my book, then the Swiss army 7 (Harvester)

Even in my regular pants pocket it does not feel like its heavy or bulky. My gf carries the Huntsman in her purse. Gotta have at least short blade, reg blade, scissors, saw, awl, can opener, screwdriver....but extras like file, magnifying glass, pliers, is awesome. Hilarious about the kidnapping scenario! I got over myself and got a Black Alox Cadet about 5 years ago. Used to carry all the tactical blades. I also have the huntsman, farmer, and a few other SAKs. Anyway, I put a Clipdraw gun clip on it...slid it in my pocket, and it's done about everything I've needed and can't see needing more (I know I'm different, but I never met a job for a scissors...that a knife couldn't do ok at...but if you need a knife, a scissors doesn't always work very well.) I did grind down the inside curve of the can opener (thank you Felix here on YT) and it's been an awesome box opener since - saving my main blade from the glue gunk. I like all your choices... it's cool to have them. I'm never without a Leatherman very far away either...so I suppose that helps. The pliers are awfully useful to me on a very regular basis.

The Campers EDC or day hikes, the GAK if there might be more wood carving involved and the Huntsman if I'm going further afield or staying in hotels, the scissors, tweezers and small pen blade are a great basic first aid combo and yes I occasionally use the corkscrew but not often for myself.

Hey Swiss Army Dan Great video. For Urban EDC in 91mm you can't beat the Compact. In 84mm maybe a Sportsman (Very under rated) or a vintage Tinker Small with the file on the Phillips. 58mm go whole hog with a Midnight Mini Champ. I have put a lot effort in honing my collection of SAKS and to group them by color coding them with scales and lanyards so that it makes this decision a bit easier. I also like to ensure that I have some dedicated SAKS for specific tasks, like my food knives are only for eating or food prep depending on the situation and comprise of a 111mm OH Nomad or OH Sentinal or 84mm waiter - one of these are usually in the pouch of my lunch cooler. Then in my backpack for more utility it varies between either a Workchamp, Skipper, or Cybertool 34. In my pocket its more often the Passenger and Manager combo or Explorer and Rally. My light carry is a combo that fits in my wallet of a Bantam and SD Classic both in Alox with a Swisscard Lite. Climber and Compact also get some pocket time on occasion. At my desk in my drawer at home I always keep my Swisschamp and Minichamp. And for grooming in my bedside is my SwissGear Nail Clipper 580. Next I want to look into more Alox models, but seems like I might want to getting into modding them to get some custom combinations like a Pioneer X with electrician blade. Anyway thanks for the great vid, these are helpful in curating my own collection.

Normal daily hometown EDC the model Waiter. If I visit another town for a weekend the model Spartan. Since fewer wine bottles have corks might change that in the future to the Bantam for hometown EDC. For in suit and tie (happens very rare) that really flat alox scales two blade pen knife. For the outdoors I always have my Dutch Military issued model 'Pioneer" (it has that key ring) but it's build stronger and the tools have just a bit thicker spines, but could go with the civilian model Pioneer also, as my last resort knife. I need that key ring because it's attached with a lanyard to my pants. I usually also carry a Leatherman with the saw tool in it when outdoors. Been thinking about the Farmer for just day hikes in nature so I can leave the Leatherman.

I have in fact opened a can of paint with my Spartan (big) screwdriver, when the can was new and then many times more every time I have opened it. It works well for that, with no noticeable damage to the tool/screwdriver/knife. That said you should probably be a bit careful as it is only an improvised prybar; work around the lid in circles to avoid damaging both tool and lid (so that the lid fits snuggly back on for storage of the leftover paint, and opens more easily next time). Be patient, go more circles as needed until you have a good place to move in to break the potential vacuum, and don't put too much leverage on the screwdriver. I hold it up close by the screwdriver and try to at least somewhat push on it and that end to keep the majority of pressure on that tool/end rather than the opposite end of the handle. If one follows this way of doing it I am sure it will most likely work for opening cans of paint that are hard to open for many years to come.

Simon Feeney picked up a Tinker a little while back, basically a Spartan with a phillips head screwdriver instead of a corkscrew, can’t believe how much I use it! A great edc. Picked up a Signature today (Classic SD + pen). I really wanted a Manager or an alox Rambler but they ship don’t here to New Zealand. Oh no, this is turning into an addiction!

I know what you mean. I don't have as many Swiss Army knives as you, but I collect all kinds of knives, and sometimes I just stand in front of my knife chest ( old six drawer Craftsman tool box from the 80s) filled with my knives, and I ponder about how much wasted time I have logged in just deciding what knife to carry...... I feel your pain bro :(

I carry the Compact at work in my khakis because it's not as thick. I carry the Mountaineer in my jeans pockets when I'm not at work.

Therapy is an option so my wife says when I show her my latest purchase or modification. I have 3 favourites. The Climber, the Explorer and the Spartan (red, black or camo).....and then there's the Huntsman and the Alox Farmer or even the Hiker, not to mention the Ranger. It is nice to know I'm not alone in my suffering. Is there a name for this illness?

I have a serrated Spartan that I EDC a lot.
@swissarmydan93545 жыл бұрын
I mean, why wouldn't you? But seriously, having the serrated large blade with the small blade to back it up is money. Thanks for watching!

Hard to beat a Compact for Urban EDC. Seriously....Compact. The Climber? I love me a Climber, but it's toooooooo phat for EDC in the City.
@swissarmydan93546 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Jack! And I agree, unless I'm wearing baggier pants or a Jacket, I usually prefer the Compact to the Climber. Cheers!
@jack_batterson6 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Dan. For purposes of full disclosure, I'll admit to having two Climbers, but only one Compact. Should I rectify that? BTW: I've given you a little grief in your 'Discussion' section of your KZbin site. All in good fun, cheers!

Thanks, Jack! I actually have a 4 layer video, but it's not very comprehensive: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2i4nGSVpd91b7M Cheers!

I’ve tried many times to edc more than 2 layers but it just doesn’t work for me. Spartan/tourist/compact or pioneer with a classic sd are my usual carry

Dan you never a review on the 111 trekker knifes. Do you think they are to big for EDC
@swissarmydan93545 жыл бұрын
For my EDC purposes, the hundred and 11 mm line is a little too big. But it's whatever works for each individual. I know the trekker has a big fan base. Cheers, thanks for watching!

Deciding is not so hard. First carry a 58mm on your key ring - mine is the Midnite Manager ( I also have the Midnite Mini-Champ which I bought used on Ebay & upgraded it with new scales but have yet to actually carry it as the Manager somehow suits me better ) Second decide if you want to carry a Gentleman's pocket knife or a PTK ( Pocket Tool Kit ) that day, if its the former then a 93mm Pioneer or 84mm Cadet or if you want a bigger blade then a try a 111mm Garant, if you need a PTK today then forgo the Gentleman's knife & carry a 91mm Huntsman which has a wide range of tools & is not too bulky in your pocket or as a slightly smaller alternative carry an 85mm Evolution EvoGrip S17 or S18 ( the S17 has a corkscrew & the S18 has a Phillips screwdriver overwise they are the same knife )
