Interestingly, Chris Moyer who made this also made Exodus, where he expanded on this map and made another. Some pretty good ideas, though it always feels super large. I'm indifferent to this map in Auger Zenith. It is undeniably beautiful, but it never really wowed me. The exploration seemed slow, and the back allies didn't lead anywhere for me. Though I do love the feeling of verticality this map plays with, a penthouse shootout and the final arena spectacular. But in terms of combat, it's light and doesn't pack the impact. Its remake does ramp up the stakes significantly, having a much bigger end-shootout and some really noteworthy additions, but as it stood in this WAD, it felt like a map to relax to. I hope the map maker sticks at it, as they can craft some awe-inspiring locals and great ideas. In particular, the revision showed their growth as a mapper, which I found utterly delightful.

Cyberpunk as a whole is a Dystopian genre. Sure there can be over the top cool things like folding out 3 rocket launchers from your arm in it but the overall setting is always bleak witz either mega coros or semi totalitarian goverments keeping the working class "mute" by forcing them in a consumerist hellscape. And it adds often more cautionary tales of transhumanism with cybernetics that are basicaly mandatory to compete but at the same time making people dependend and unable to exist outside the grid.

Cyberpunk as a genre can be very high energy and very oppressive and dystopian. Often both at once! Shadowrun, the cyberpunk (and magic) tabletop RPG, refers to these two modes as 'pink mohawk' and 'grey trenchcoat'. The latter is your traditional movie / novel cyberpunk; dark, gritty, rainy, people suffer, the boot of the corporation on your neck, secrets in the dark just waiting to be found and earn you a quick death, your body dumped in an alley. Pink Mohawk however is peak 80's / 90's anime energy. Neon lights, big fancy chrome cyber-arms that let you punch a dude through the next three walls while you fire your laser shotgun at his friends before that cyborg tiger with the rocket launcher on the back kills you, then you get away in your jet-engine-ed Lamborghini. It's a matter of taste exactly which you prefer, but they are both very much part of the genre. :)
@wallabra8 ай бұрын
I would argue they're not mutually exclusive. In fact, the show-offery of big flashy neons and alluring advertisements are often the number one stereotypical cyberpunk "veneer of prosperity".
@TheRuinsfate8 ай бұрын
@@wallabraThat's why I said 'Often both at once'. It's quite common for grey trenchcoat to be the backdrop and overarching theme behind a pink mohawk adventure / tv show / anime / whatever. :)

The neon and chrome punks are either the absolute pinnacle of their career whom you absolutely do not want to fuck with if you value your lives, or the absolute bottom of the barrel "going to die in the next five minutes" trash. There's no inbetween, and that rules.

@demogorgonzola8 ай бұрын
- Having a depressing mood in a cyberpunk setting is a given - overwhelming monolithic structures, aggressive neon lighting and the failure of high tech to bring happiness was all in Gibson's stories, that's where the "punk" part of the name comes from - Heh, that's a "Die Hard " quote with the glass... bonus bilingual trivia - in Poland the movie title was translated as "Szklana pułapka", literally "a glass trap" in reference to the skyscraper it took place in. This of course fell apart when the sequels hit the screen, taking place in airport and cioty streets respectively. Even more totally unsolicited trivia, there was a series of spoof movies with Lesie Nielsen and one of them was a play on that movie - "Spy Hard" which got Polish title "Szklanką po łapkach" - it literally means "hit with a glass on the hands" which might be a little incongruous on its own but it's a brilliant phonetic twist of the Polish version of og title. - And at the end, an obligatory catJAM for the Carpenter music :)
