“If you wait until you have enough money to decorate and make your home your own, it will never happen. If you wait until you can afford to buy everything new, you are missing the point. It is the old, the new, the hand-me-down, the collected, the worn but loved things in your home that make it your own.” -Stacy Risenmay, Not Just a Housewife

I had an elderly aunt that was the wisest person I ever knew. She had a lovely home furnished with beautiful pieces and tasteful art objects. She would always say “ create the world you want to live in. You have to do it yourself because no one else can make you happy “. I know she was talking about more than furniture but it certainly is a good place to start.

When I went through my divorce during midlife I ended up in a one bedroom apartment with my dog too. I had nothing. My dog and I slept on the floor with a pillow and blanket. I gradually picked up things I needed from garage sales and second hand shops. It’s was a few months before you could tell someone was living there. A difficult time, but we got through it!

Susan you always give me hope that no matter what, I am going to be ok. Everything about you is lovely! We most certainly do not land where we had intended, but it works out. I live in a 150 years old Greek Revival home. When we moved here, we were coming from a very small house that I had bought during a divorce . That little house was decorated in bright yellow , purple, and tangerine. It was to make my girls and I happy. We were leaving a beautiful, Victorian home as a result of the failed marriage. I was so angry at him and the decor that I left everything except what belonged to the girls. We went modern! The girls had purple hanging beads over their bedroom and closet doors. It was fun and crazy! I remarried four years later and my husband moved into my little house. We stayed in it for several years and then we moved to this big, old house. I did not have the money to completely furnish the house, so I went to the Salvation Army for drapes and dressers. Anyways, I fell in love with the Salvation Army. It’s too fun. When I get tired of something, I re-donate it and replace it with another found treasure.

I had similar circumstances. After my divorce, I left all my contemporary furniture behind - donated most. I bought an old tudor/craftsman style French cottage and decorated it with bold colors and thrifted antiques, totally opposite of what I had before. My daughter wanted her room painted pumpkin orange and that's what she got! I remarried 5 years after buying that house and we stayed there until 5 months ago. My hubby and I just relocated to a small stone cottage in the country and I'm having fun making this 'ours'.

When I divorced my first husband, I got the furniture. It fit nicely into my new apartment. Luckily I had two love seats, so it worked in my small living room. I had a cozy seating arrangement. I visited the thrift stores and filled in the spaces with things I loved. I learned to honor my self. I gained confidence and comfort as the time went by. Getting a divorce was painful, but me and my new apartment healed any loss I felt. In the end I gained more than I lost as I set myself free from a very unhappy situation. I created a new and better life for myself.

This was such a fun video to watch. I too had to rebuild my life at 63. I was determined to make my tiny apartment my happy place and I did it with the simplest of things. I love thrift stores too. Four years later now and I bought a small condo after saving every penny I could from working to put down a sizable down payment. I absolutely love walking in the door of my new home. I bought a plaque made with tiles that greets me that reads “Welcome Home”. It makes me smile and so do you.❤️

Susan your home is beautiful! I have also been on a journey of healing...in 2011 I divorced and left everything behind for a new start and a new life. Not long after that I found you, and no matter what struggles I endured I watched you every week and I didn't feel alone. I realized there were other women in my age group starting over. Now I rent a house and I have a good time decorating and adding things I enjoy. I'm truly grateful for what I have now and for what I have built for myself. I provide myself with a good life so thankyou for your influence and heartfelt encouragement!

Loved this so much! When I started redecorating my parent's home I was sure I'd tear much of it out and "modernize" it all. I ended up leaving the cornflower blue corian countertops, light oak cabinets and even the square tile backsplash with the teapot drawings on scattered tiles that my dad had installed (in the 90s), in the kitchen and I"m so grateful. They remind me of happy times in the home over the years and my kitchen is such a warm and inviting place that is one-of-a-kind. I did end up putting in new touches around the home (paint, flooring, door handles, sink faucets, light switch covers) but kept much of the feel, including a china cabinet, grandfather clock and some beautiful wood furniture that had been passed down or that my father made. I am very grateful to be surrounded by things I love each day even if it isn't the most trendy. It feels like living in a beautiful Bed & Breakfast and it feels like home.

I am surprised to hear that after waiting so long for your current apartment to become available, you're now looking for a house. I once decorated my home in a pastel southwestern style. Not because I liked it (I hated it) but because it was the popular décor at the time. Lesson learned, decorate for yourself and not to buy in to a current fad.

After my divorce, I bought an Ikea sofa. Wow, I can change it up with slipcovers and I paid very little for it. I used to sleep on it when I didn't have a bed yet (several months) It still looks good 14 years later in my perfect tiny home with dog and cat, Indian print table cloth and goodwill lamps. I really enjoy watching how far you have come, Susan. Me too! I always say the "F" word now. I'm free.

Thanks for being the best part of my weekend! Lovely video! As a retired decorator, my best advice to friends who are in a downward spiral or funk, or just suffering from the blues, has always been: Move the furniture around! You'll see the things you love again that you haven't noticed for a while, and you'll have a new environment to help you step forward into the next chapter of your life. And it's cheaper than a therapist!!!!!

At the current time I love what I call the English Cottage look. It's a warm cozy and charming mixture of antiques and thrift store finds with soft, peaceful colors that reflect nature. I tend to change up throw pillows, flowers and surface decor as the seasons change. I want everyone who enters to feel comfortable and welcome. Still, I have a feeling that young 30+ newlyweds might enter and comment, "This looks just like my grandma's house"!

Thank you for this, Susan. We are about to move from 5 acres and a large 2 story home to a manufactured home in an adult park. It is going to require having to decide what I really really love, and part with other things that I also love, but won’t have room for. I have decades worth of things I have collected. I grew up VERY poor, so I guess I spent my adult years treating myself to all of the things I could never have before. Now, I have to go the other way again. This is going to be HARD! But, in a way, I will be glad to pare down my life into a more manageable quantity. And I also don’t want my kids to hate me when I pass away and THEY have to deal with all of my stuff. My style is somewhat Granny Chic and a little Boho, early hippy. I think because my daughters grew up in my semi-maximalist house, they are both minimalists. Funny. BTW I totally skipped the gray wall fad. I prefer a creamy white that shows off the pretty art, plants and trinkets.

Susan, I truly understand what you are saying. After my husband died last March, I sold our large home and moved to Hawaii to be nearer to our daughter. I donated most of my furniture, but kept the furniture we had picked out together years ago. The decorating style here has a more tropical theme. My furniture is traditional. However, it is what I love, and has great memories, When I get my house built here, it will look and feel like home to me. And amazingly the amount of furniture I shipped will just furnish my smaller home.

I love watching your channel because you give me hope. I’m a apple decorator fanatic. I had my kitchen with all type of apples, including the door knobs. I had to sell my house and I did it because of too many unfortunate events after my divorce. My kids tell me I should sell everything and start a new chapter. I haven’t been able to find a place because the rents in Miami, Florida are extremely expensive. I have everything in storage but the fact that I may not be able to find a place where I can see my apples again just makes me very depressed and I cry constantly. I feel I don’t have the strength to continue.

The costs of renting, or buying a home right now are out of range for ordinary people right now. I know it took me 2 years to find a place in North Carolina. Don't give up! It sounds like you have good support from your children. Keep looking and asking friends to keep their eyes and ears open. Talk to a realtor, because they know what properties are coming available before anyone else. In the meantime, brainstorm about other places you could live that would be less expensive than the Miami area. Also, in today's economy, people are living in tiny houses, 5th wheels, trailers, etc... Look at it as a necessary step in your life journey. It can be permanent, or temporary, but remember you are in control of your life and you are stronger than you can even imagine you are or ever could be! Hang in there!

I've never got into the grey color trend. I love white & off-white but it's with lots of different textures (mother of pearl lamps, white glass, big round modern white lacquer dining table, a cozy & casual rattan loveseat.) It makes me feel cozy, modern & elevated😊

The first video I ever watched of yours was called "Decorating my one bedroom apartment". I found it by accident but clicked on because I am downsizing from a 3 bedroom house to an apt. and wanted some ideas. I loved that video and the way your apartment reflected your personality so much that I became an instant subscriber and fan ever since!

I moved into my brand new townhome a year and half ago. I wanted all new furniture. It was covid so I bought online from restoration hardware. Disaster, It was too massive for my small room, I returned it all and got stickley walnut grove mid century and it fit perfect. My friend saw it last week and said it looked like a park ave home. I love the way it turned out.

I think years ago I bought things thinking they were classic and would last. I did not think disposable or minimal which tends to be “in” now, especially with young people. I love the idea of simpler but warm and inviting. I did not grow up with the idea of repurposing or thrift. I love the self expression of it now. I love growing into these ideas. You have helped me to free me up. Thank you!

I feel like I have been through every decorating style, looking back it just makes me smile. I am moving again and donating furniture pieces that I have had a long history with, but I have moved on emotionally and now it is time for some else to enjoy and get pleasure using them. My secret is only take the pieces you Love. Don’t worry when you are shopping at thrift stores, antique stores, TJMaxx if you fall in love with pieces that are from a different Decorating Style, it will work because you will put your own spin on it! Great video, everyone should be surrounded by beauty every morning to start your day with happiness. ❤️👍❤️👍❤️👍❤️

Memories is all we have Dee Anna the other "stuff " is just stuff. I don't know where the time goes but time is not a healer. Every song makes me cry. In my opinion...creating a cozy home is about soft lights, candles, soft blankets, clean bedsheets, quiet moments, good food, and hot chocolate (in the cold months) freshly made lemonade (in the hot months) and talks of the soul. Not ever raising your voice, but talking to each other with respect. I've been with my husband since 1977. The secret to a beautiful life .... is not being afraid of telling that special one how much you love and respect them. Kindness is the key. Once you establish the respect and genuine love and kindness, happiness follows throughout your entire life. That is how to make a happy, cozy home with the one you love. ❤ And ... finally .... never never ever take them for granted. NEVER.

*New Subscriber* . Laura Rae sent me. I absolutely loved this video, it was very nostalgic for me. I purchased a 1300 sq. ft. ranch style home built in 1965 eight years ago. I downsized from a 4 bedroom 2.5 bath Colonial that was too much maintenance for myself. I knew from the moment I walked in the front door, this was my home. I'm an avid thrifter and after a few go-rounds with tweaking my style, I have come to a perfect balance for me. I enjoy a casual cottage style with a bit of rustic and traditional. I'm not trendy and enjoy an earthy neutral color palette that shift easily with the seasons. For me, using a coordinating color scene in my semi-open floor plan has made a huge difference. I tend to work in a ratio of the "pop of color" du jour. I would challenge anyone who knows me to say this home is not a total reflection of my 55 years on earth. I've spent a lot of time curating my space, not a lot of money. Your decorating advice was spot on, absolutely agree on the conversational seating, one of biggest pet-peeves.

I hope you had a wonderful week. Boy you were talking to me today. I remember my first decorating venture the colors were brown and orange I had a dark dark brown couch orange drapes but they were the in colors that was in 19 73 after my husband and I and divorce. And I was starting over at 23 years old I could conquer the world. Then I met my second husband we dated for eight years. Helped him through law school. He walks out with someone else that he only knew a month he story about it now but it makes no difference. To make my very long story short I’m going to be 72 years old I find myself alone I sold my home which I raise my four daughters by myself worked very hard to maintain it and I wish I knew how to send you pictures of it it was spectacular. Now I find myself in a very small apt with my two little dogs. When I was younger I struggled to keep the big house I worked 23 jobs so that my kids would not have to leave the school system but now I find myself alone my kids have their big houses. Of which I am so happy for them. However I’m lonely they think my apartment is full of a lot of junk I’ve had to downsize can’t afford much because of my age Social Security doesn’t pay for a lot, so I have to work full-time. Never thought going through the last phase of my life that it would come to this. But I understand what you mean about wanting to surround yourself with things that you like or love right now I have a secondhand couch and coffee table which I think are beautiful I bought the cheapest furniture I could afford and put them together, found out that you can buy furniture and put it together for a lot cheaper than if it was already put together. But it seems that all I do is work and sleep, all I wanna do is sleep. I love the way you’ve decorated your apartment I love your colors I love everything about it. I am a crafter so I do craft a lot of things and end up giving them away but I don’t have the room to store anything this apartment only has two closets that’s it and they’re full to the brim. But today you spoke to my heart and yes I know about the pain when someone that you love very much walks out. It’s a physical pain. I don’t understand how that happens but it is a physical. I so look forward to your KZbin channel every week I know I’ll get out of this funk one way or another I have never been a quitter and I’m not going to start at 72 thank you so much Susan you are very much appreciated.

I lost everything we owned while I was in the hospital and rehab. They never found the driver of the truck that hit us so there was only our insurance for the bills.I bought a bed and a chair it was very rough and depressing but slowly I started getting things and decorating my 1 room apt I rented. One of my most cherished items is a maple rocking chair in my living room. Gifted to me by my parents on my 14th birthday. I was so disappointed. I was 14 for crying out loud ….I wanted a new outfit or some records. I got a darn chair ! I have moved this chair from Missouri to Florida. It’s been in my childhood home, first apartment, trailer, and several houses. It’s not my style, doesn’t fit in my decor (or any decor), takes up too much floor space, it has scratched up floors, walls, and smashed lots of carpet. I used to feel that it was a lesson for me. “You can’t always get what you want”. It gave me negative vibes. I am 60 years old now. My parents are gone. I just moved into my forever home. This chair has outlasted any old outfit or record that was so important to me at age 14. It has so much history. It’s part of me. I will never part with that darn chair.
