Thanks for this teaching. I’ve got some very serious health issues and I have given my whole life including my illness to God, and am believing that God will use my illness for His use, even if he chooses not to heal me. I have had Christian friends tell me not to say I have illness, say I am healed. God can heal me, but I don’t believe my words can. Right now God is using my circumstances to draw me to Him. His strength in my life, not mine. His will not mine.

I have seen what I've confessed by faith come to past, throughout the years. It definitely strengthens my faith, which is a plus, anytime!!! I was attending word of faith churches way back in the late 1970s and 1980s. So I know a thing or two because I've seen a thing or two. I have seen people get very depressed because they didn't get what they spoke into existence. I have seen a pastor's wife get cancer and die and the whole church was disillusioned because they spoke healing over her.. I have seen people get blamed for their illness or problems because they didn't have enough faith or they didn't make the proper confession. This is just messed up. Our faith should be in God, not in our words.

@@justindarnellfpv Unfortunately, it took me a while to see the falseness of it all. We were told that we have creative power in our words. For example, say to this mountain it will be removed and cast into the sea. We were taught that we could affect illness by the words we speak. We can "accept it" by our words, or refuse to believe we have an illness, and by that denial, we can overcome the illness. Pure false doctrine and wishful thinking. The fact is we do not have the same creative power in our words as God has. Sure, our words can affect our attitudes, positive mind set and all that. But we can not create, cause into being, or cast away based on our words. We can pray and ask God to move the storm, heal the sickness, change our situation, but we in ourselves do not have that kind of power. I eventually came to my senses and realized that it is faith in God, not faith in faith, that might cause a miracle. Might. It's still up to God as He is sovereign and sees the whole picture. I was in my 20s and didn't have the Christian upbringing or wisdom to know what was true.

Greetings from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 Excellent show fellas, I’ve actually been hoping that you guys would talk about this subject because in my experiences in 30 years in Australian Pentecostalism, this teaching is everywhere either in a full blown word of faith way or in more subtle forms but it’s pretty prominent to the point it has infiltrated a lot of the church. Your work is very important for the body of Christ. I only wish that when I was a young charismatic, I had guys like yourselves who weren’t afraid of theology, church history and doctrine, that could of helped me understand the Bible in its fullness and took it as seriously as you guys do. We need more theological Pentecostals that want to speak into the movement and correct the inconsistencies and errors it unfortunately produces and distributes to the world. I’m hoping that you guys and maybe one of your theologian mates would dedicate at least one episode (if possible) to the “Lakeland revival” and all the “apostles” that attended Todd Bentley’s apostolic commissioning service and all that transpired. And all your thoughts on what should be done in hindsight and if those apostles should be held to account for speaking for God. All the best and keep up this good work. Andrew

I believe in faith confessions as long as they are in line with God‘s word. I know some people take them to extremes, but I do believe it is a biblical principle. You hear the word of God and faith comes by hearing, you believe it and speak it from your mouth and act accordingly.

Yes, I distinguish this by calling them proclamations. When you proclaim what is written, you are just repeating Scripture, a proclamation of God's Word.

@@meggy8868 that’s good… There are different names for it but I definitely believe we should do it. Those of us who do it do not deny the reality of sickness, poverty, demonic activity, etc., we do however deny those things the right to define us or take over our lives. We are in forcing the enemies defeat. We are confessing/proclaiming/declaring/whatever that we are the righteousness of God in Christ, that we are the healed of the Lord, that we have all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ, that we are more than conquerors through him who loved us regardless of what our circumstances say or regardless of how it might look at the present moment.

@@meggy8868 I know that there are extremes in this area, but honestly I cannot see what the big issue is with people who are so anti-confessing/creating/declaring/proclaiming the word. When I say the word I’m speaking of the written word and not supernatural insight given by the Holy Spirit to declare/prophesy, etc. When I tell someone to confess all the clear the word, etc., I am saying when you feel the oppression of the enemy, speak to it in Jesus name and commanded to go. Believe you receive when you pray, Mark 11:24. Believe that the promises of God are yes and in him amen to the glory of God by us, two Corinthians 1:20. Blessed are those who believe and have not seen, John 20, Hebrews 11:6… Anyway, you’ve got me started. I got the preach on me! Lol

Thanks I appreciate your channel. Another scripture on decreeing and declaring that is miss used is Job 22:28. Most people who reference this scripture don’t realize that it was Eliphaz who was telling Job to do this to fix his own problems. And just a reminder that God was mad at Job’s friends (including Eliphaz) because they didn’t speak rightly about God (Job 42:7&8).

As per your comment Josh at the end, I was saved from horrible circumstances. I got saved into a church closely related to bethel in redding( bill johnson and group). Some of the things I was taught almost caused me to walk away from Jesus, because I never had "enough" faith to see those things manifest( example i degree ill be rich, or have this or that) and they NEVER came to pass. I would go "WAY" out of my way to "BELIEVE" and it never happened. It got me so depressed thinking GOD had abandoned me, and i almost walked away from JESUS. I personally read the scriptures after the fact, and ALL i see in the NEW testament, is to ask and pray HUMBLY. GOD WILL ANSWER , and not always how we want, and sometimes its no. His power moves through us when we pray. Jesus said He cant do anything unless the FATHER does it through HIM. How much more so US? Jesus said to bless those that curse you, and we know the world hates GOD without a cause, and CURSE HIM always. Yet He does GOOD to those that CURSE HIM. I personally think the "cursing", is just actions and intents of the heart( words also in the form of speaking good things or evil but not "creating") and JESUS said words come from the heart, which is deceitfully wicked. Thats my personal opinion. I do not believe there is "power" in my words, but in how my words EFFECT others to make or break them. A person with a heavy heart doesnt take much to break them badly, and someone with "thick" skin does not worry about others angry words. If i Say im a christian and do everything they are doing, they know im lying. Yet if i say Trust in JEsus and repent and im living BIBLICALLY, they see my words as more true because im trying to be honest and not be double minded in actions.

I think there is a biblical position articulated by E. W. Kenyon (who I believe was largely misunderstood). Kenyon actually took a position against any "positive thinking" or "positive confession" outside of God's word. He linked such practices to Christian Science and eastern religions. In his book "The Power of A Positive Confession of God's Word", he states that we fight the good fight of faith by declaring what God has already stated in His word. He further states that some of the greatest battles we fight as Christians would be when we are standing on God’s word in faith, and doubt would seek to negate our faith. He taught that by holding one's heart steady on the reality of God's word and aligning our speech to this reality, we overcome the effect of doubt and double mindedness. I cannot count how many times God has come through for me when I have done this!

I have come to understand that our understanding of healing is also limited. After some recent mri of my spine the medical specialist's responce was "i dont understand why you are not paralysed" . Has the underlying problem disappeared...no. . Have i come to see each day as a miracle of provision i can move, walk and drive a car. I celebrate this provision but do not deny the problem i do have . I am thankful for the doctor 2 doors down being home when my airway obsructed last week, i could not speak (and therefore use my phone for help) and had almost no ability to breathe. I survived. Do i believe God helped me yes, he gave me mental clarity on how to get help while choaking.

But oy vey!!! Lately, there has been such frequent use of that idea of "making decrees and speaking into existence "that it is getting absurd. (A couple of glaring examples were recent decrees by Robin B "the trenchcoat Elijah prophet" in Carbondale as he claimed by a decree and his staff to close a demon portal above USA ,which he said was conjured by CERN ,soon before the solar eclipse!..and Kat K, the Pink Revelator, as she made a declaration that her 1 million angels (over whom she said she was made "the Spirit Force Commander") showed up in a certain church as they as a group were making a decree!!!....It's getting almost to the point of mass hysteria absurdity to hear crowd speaking in a chant "Trump is now president and the wealth reversal is coming my way in Jesus name!"! etc etc. And I might add, I'm seeing dear friends of mine rebuke me for "asking God to do something", instead of claiming and "confessing that it is already done"...(some of the faith teachers have said "I never ask anymore...for I know my authority.God told me,"Why are you asking me to do what I've already told you to do?" ..and some snarkily add, "To ask God and timidly say "if it be Thy will" can never heal anyone!!! for you're in doubt!" This is a major issue for it is so prevalent among thousands ,if not millions, of our dear fellow-charismatics (perhaps due to the Word/Faith seeds planted decades ago by those like Copeland!) May God help us to come back to genuine faith in Jesus and not, as you guys have noted, "faith in our own "FORCE" of faith (as though we're "Obe juan Kanobi's Jedis in training"!)

Having been in this charismatic zoo for a long time now it seems to me from reading the Bible that this whole Christian experience is supposed to be relational with the Bible being the manual or the instruction book. The more humble one is in their relationship with God the more there is experience with the power of God being shown in the tangible world. i.e. healing, speaking things into or out of existence and all the other zoo experiences that have been experienced and taught over the last 50 +/- years. It is in the Bible but the people experiencing these things seem to be in a humble sold out relationship with God and therefore hearing from the Holy Spirit as being the leader and instigator in the situation or experience. Just because we think something is a good idea does not mean automatically that it is a good idea. In other words for the power of God to truly manifest then we have to ask the question; Lord what do you want to do in this specific situation. To truly hear Him we have to be rid of out own agendas. Scripture says the fear of the Lord id the begining of wisdom.

It just hit me as you were saying the bible shows people coming to Jesus and revealing their needs, and how Word of faith encourages people to not speak their weaknesses. They just need to declare themselves healthy, rich, and perfect. Sounds like Satan and the root of pride developing. Wow! I used to believe in speaking positive affirmations and praying for health and wealth. So thankful God has revealed truth to me. Praying for even more discernment.

A lot of the early Pentecostals were strong faith people to the point where some of them did not even believe in doctors, which I think is ridiculous, but the assemblies have not always been as watered down as some of them are now. PC Nelson, whom I believe was the founder of Southwestern Assemblies of God was strong on faith and healing. Smith Wigglesworth was very strong in this area, etc. So there were people that emphasized faith and healing very strongly in the Holderness and Pentecostal movements before the “word of faith “movement ever came along.

One of the reasons for that may be the influence of John Alexander Dowie. He worked in hospitals before becoming a Christian and saw that doctors at that time were literally experimenting on people because they had no idea what to do and diagnosis was often a shot in the dark. He then went on to have an amazing gift of healing before becoming a little looney. He had a lot of influence on John G Lakes life who arguably had one of the greatest gifts of healing in America. If they were alive today they might have a slightly different opinion. Curry Blake is the head of John G lakes ministries nowadays and he definitely feels differently about it.

@@jordan-kristina2014 absolutely and to be clear, I totally believe in doctors and that if we need one we should get one and definitely pray for the Lord to give him/her wisdom on what to do, etc. I do not believe we should put our ultimate trust in them, but in the healer himself, but I do believe he has given doctors for sure. My reason for bringing that up is to give people who have a super negative perspective on the faith movement some understanding that this is not just some new weird loony position that no one has ever had. Word of faith theology has roots going back to the faith/cure movement, higher life movement, holiness movement, etc. It also stems from the understanding that healing is in redemption. That is one of the differences. A lot of third wave charismatics would believe that Jesus can and does heal, but many are not persuaded that it is God‘s will to heal everybody, and that invariably means that God might not heal them. So there is a difference. Those of us who believe that healing is redemption believe that healing is for us. This is why we believe in appropriating by faith the provision that has already been made and not just hoping God will do something. Yes Alexander Douwe did go off the rails but I also heard that he repented before he passed. He was a great pioneer.

A lot of their mindset was that they would rather die trust in God then to trust in the arm of the flash. I don’t know why some of them did not realize that Luke was a doctor… Lol@@jordan-kristina2014 it is also true that they may have a different perspective today. Although it is interesting that a great theologian that I like is Dr. Hobart Freeman. He was kind of a renegade faith guy in later years, but he actually graduated from Grace theological seminary. He received the baptism in 1966 and became a noted Bible teacher. He taught ethics, Old Testament theology, Greek and Hebrew, etc. He also did not believe in doctors too much. He red lake and so maybe that’s where he got it. He also went home to be with the Lord I believe earlier than he should have because he did not go to the doctor. He could have been medically treated, but he was a great teacher in a lot of areas.

Re put on the armor...We had a pastor come back from time at Bethel and was saying things like making physical outward displays to symbolize spiritual events. He was trying to have us act out drinking from an imaginary cup at one point. Needless to say my spirit was churning how off this all was.

🤔 It's one thing to quote the scriptures in an attempt to trust God for a person's answer to prayer..(Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:)..as has been the Christian practice for hundreds of years..of course. But it is quite another thing to approach the Bible..(as many are teaching)..as if it was a power word like..(open sesame)..and to treat the Bible as if it were a magic book of spells, that once a person learns the..(cause and effect dynamics-science, of a impersonal relationship of faith of the spiritual law of Confessing- Decreeing that he can speak things into existence to manifest Supernatural manifestations to receive, whether it be reciting positive affirmations, Scriptures quotations, are casual conversation or not and there is a vast difference. The fact of the matter is when we realizes what Positive Confession truly consists of the phrase "Speak The Word" takes on a whole complete new meaning. No really.

God does not need faith, however it is interesting that in one Corinthians 12:9, faith is listed as one of the manifestation gifts of the Holy Spirit, so that is interesting. He certainly does not need it for himself, but he does give face so he must have it. Also, there are those who assert that in Ephesians 2:8 that this faith is a gift of God to be justified, rather than the whole salvific experience.

When you hear someone say, "I'm healed in the Lord, I'm just waiting for the manifestation" ... Remember that no one ever had to say that in the Bible. The same people often base their beliefs about healing on the fact that Jesus healed all who came to Him. That's true, and He always did it immediately, visibly and completely. All physical symptoms were obliterated right there and then. Even for the blind man whom Jesus sovereignly chose to heal in two stages, it was only a matter of seconds. No one ever walked away from Jesus needing anything to be further manifested.

How about the widow whose son died? When she came to Gehazi and Elijah, they asked her if everything was well, and she said, "It is well." I would say that's a positive confession. "Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and they who love it will eat its fruit."

To me, this speaking for God like you are saying, is the definition of co-laboring with God. We are not supposed to be decreeing/declaring our own will/word, but His. Our heart motive is, from my perspective, one of the main distinguishing factors between Biblical power of the tongue vs. what the word of faith movement is saying. I don't seem to hear much from that camp about how David said in the Psalms that He gives us the desires of our heart because we "delight ourselves in Him." My interpretation of this includes the fact that if I am delighting myself in Him, His will and my will are in unity. To me that is where the guarantee lies that we will receive what we desire. Also, were these fathers prophesying over their kids?

I'm the opposite. How do I handle people that put them down without ever having heard them or read them. When I was down and couldn't attend church, I only had broadcast TV and the only church I could find was Joel's. God used him to pull me out of depression. I learned a lot and read a couple of books that also helped me gain strength. I had a seminary degree and pretty discerning and never heard or saw anything problematic. I haven't read all his books nor seen all of his sermons so I am speaking to that time only. I saw a humble person speaking what God gave him to speak.

When my children were young I found out that there were 3 registered sex offenders living in our general neighborhood. So on my morning walks I began to pray that God would move them out of the neighborhood. Within a year all were gone. Not sure how this relates to the subject of positive confessions, but I was asking/ praying and praying in tongues.

Completely false history. Hagin had his views prior to reading Kenyon..he quoted Kenyon because they came to same ideas independently. Kenyon had no connection with Qumby..(that has zero credible evidence)it was just same era. Kenyon was on ordained Baptist, Hagin Pentecostal. The writings of Baptist Spurgeon on faith, Reformed Andrew Murray on prayer and Alliance founder AB Simpson on healing were widely influential in Evangelical circles that more likely influenced both Kenyon and Hagin. Your comment about Copeland being influenced by Hagin is correct, but Copeland and others were rebuked by Hagin.

I was raised in the Word of Faith/Charismatic movement and nothing bothers me more than when someone in my family who is obviously sick or even injured declares that they’re not sick or injured because they *are* healed (present tense). It’s baffling and frustrating. I’m all for faith and do absolutely believe in healing, but can we please just live in the actual, real present? 😫 That way of thinking feels so works based, man-centered, and burdensome.

Very interesting show. I find it odd that there wasn't really a conclusion. Copland is considered a prophet/apostle (at least in his circle, right?) I wouldn't have seen him do what he did if it wasn't recorded and played later some where else. I just don't follow him. 🤷 Maybe, what he declared just hasn't happened yet? I haven't watched the whole thing. Maybe he saw in part? Not everyone gets healed, right? I think, now more than ever, we should be quick to hear and slow to speak. Our leaders, or "leaders," even more so. There are cameras everywhere. We need to learn how to hear the Spirit correctly more now than ever.

Regarding decreeing and declaring its interesting hearing Josh's testimony about cursing the strip-club out of business, please do a series on prayer and the various types we can and should do as there maybe valid times when we can actually curse unrighteous things by the power of the Spirit. However we never can curse or bless something just by declaring it or decreeing it, if it's not of God's sovereign will to do it in a specific situation then we fail to acknowledge God's sovereignty in our world. We can't make or command the Holy Spirit to do whatever we want, He is God. Also regarding Kenneth Copeland's declarative curse of the virus is really misguided because while it maybe possible for a Pastor of a church to declare a Scripture promise for example Psalm 103:1-6 over their flock, I don't believe Jesus has delegated authority to anyone in Christendom to curse away a worldwide pandemic that is affecting all the world, this is an overstepping of the nature of declaring and decreeing (if thats even a Biblical thing). The Scripture says the 'rain' falls on the just and the unjust, and I think pandemic is an example, furthermore the pandemic can be a form of God's judgement so it would be impossible to undo what God has decreed.

It strikes me that decreeing declaring is not at all biblical. When Jesus modelled prayer for us, He did not model decreeing and declaring. I don't see one prayer by any in the early church who modelled decreeing, declaring, positive confession etc. We are told to ask things of God not demand, declare etc. All this is more Law of Attraction than being bible-based and of God.

Who knows what happens to someone if they have or have had blasphemous thoughts? I want to do God's will but worry that one of those blasphemous thoughts could have caused me to be unforgiven by God. I don't know and have thought about suicide although knowing it will get me nowhere.

Hi Derek! I struggled with this type of thoughts shortly after I became a Christian. To this day I struggle with intrusive thoughts, although now they are different - mostly about harm coming to my family etc. There is a big difference between "thoughts that come to your mind" and "your thoughts". Thoughts and ideas and feelings that come to us are just that: thoughts, feelings & ideas. For something to be sinful, our will needs to be engaged. Sinful thoughts are wrong thoughts that we choose to entertain, to dwell on, to nurse. God doesn't judge us based on whatever silly stuff comes to our minds. He judges us based on our choices. And the choice to turn our backs on him and reject Jesus is the only one for which He will reject us at the end. So as long as you love Jesus and want to do God's will and you want to know him more and more, you can be assured that there is no obstacle or rejection from his part. Please never think of harming yourself on account of such thoughts, just bring them before God: confess and repent if you have the slightest suspicion of your will being engaged, otherwise just bring them to God and ask for his mercy and strength to go safely through this temptation. The more you listen to good preaching (I recommend Mike Winger here on KZbin) and the more you learn from the Scriptures, the less the blasphemous thoughts will come to your mind - that's only based on my experience. No guarantee you'll never have intrusive thoughts of one kind or another, but this is how to deal with them - just let them fall off by the roadside and you keep walking with the Lord. I'll pray for you just now.

I’ve always been WOF... but my Amen must meet Gods Amen for anything to be done. Derek Prince is a better example for why we declare and decree. Gods gifts are not to be trifled with... they are real and always good. Certainly not usually $$. We would all take peace and health in exchange for financial wealth. Most ppl in USA are comparatively extremely wealthy. We need to respect His Body first and come with humility and obedience before the Lord in expectation of His blessings which are wonderful. What about Elijah? I didn't read anywhere God told him, he could give the lady a Son, God doesn't say he will raise the boy up. God doesn't tell him he will multiply the flour and Oil, I don't believe God told him that he would stop the rain. Elijah just stated things and they happened. I think a major difference when looking at Copeland, and say Miller, is that Miller approaches his prayer with reverence, with a God focused prayer. Miller wants to see people healed not for his own gain, but for God's glory and their salvation. Copeland wants money and fame.

Yeah so y’all are kind of extreme in this area. As one who has a face background, we do not use faith to “get what we want. “We use our faith to conform our experience with God‘s word in whatever area it may be, whether it be healing, the meeting of our financial needs, deliverance, or whatever the case may be. Even though I can tell you were attempting to see the nuances, I can definitely tell that this is not your background. Certainly there are extremes in the faith movement and the leaders of it through the years have dealt with the excesses such as in Kenneth Hagan‘s book, “the Midas touch. “So yes there are some goofy face people just like there are some goofy third wave or people, apostolic/prophetic people, etc., but the early faith movement was a movement that emphasized believing the promises and in the provisions of God, speaking and walking out those things by faith to conform our experiences with God‘s word.

"Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong." I am the oldest in my family, that all wears reading glasses, which I don't wear. I look younger than my young siblings. My memory is much better than any of them. You can't blame this on good genes. Miller, you can waste away if you believe that is your genetic plight. Abraham, Moses, Caleb, Joshua did not decline in old age. Jesus said, You are not of this world.
