The best thing about Tommy Bolin in this situation (and when he was in the James Gang) was he didn't try to be Blackmore (or Joe Walsh) he was just himself. We lost a great one way before his time \m/

@markgowans5 жыл бұрын
Glenn Hughes is now 68 and sounds much better now than he did in his Deep Purple days. You have to remember that in the 70's Glenn was a serious drug addict and stoned most of the time and that probably made his vocal performances poor.

I love Zeppelin, Sabath, Budgie, Jethro Tull, Trapeze, King Crimson and many others, but Purple remainst my favourite since early childhood. Tommy was great guitarist, very talented, but for me Ritchie was the best. I prefer Ritchie above Page, Iomi, Beck, Hendrix or Clapton. Tommy was sweet handsome guy, but Glenn Hughes was more in my type. He was amazing singer, bass player and very sexy men 😊

Phenomenal high energy Purple! I actually saw them on this tour, and I thought Tommy Bolin was amazing. One comment on the video: Jon Lord does a blistering organ solo, yet the camera is focused on guitar and bass? For some reason, cameramen in the '70s were a little musically ignorant.
@GreenerHill5 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the audio and video have been spliced together from Long Beach '76 and Tokyo '75 respectively.
@taterlysaladman93774 жыл бұрын
@@GreenerHill Spliced and doctored to hide the picking hands and the mouths whenever they are far from matching the audio. This one takes more imagination than I have, sorry to say. Although I saw them that year and the singing sounded just like that, too many wrenched screams and not enough attention to notes.

Audio from Long Beach, California 27.2.76 with Tokyo footage over the top. Everyone knows Tommy was hampered by a numb arm after Jakarta. Some finger vibratos lifted from other parts of the gig to sound like he was improvising but I can assure everyone he didn't play it like this. Unnecessary and annoying. Long Beach was a good enough gig without all that arsing about. Glenn Hughes was clearly coked up as his vocals are erratic, but Tommy was playing well, his improvisation after the first chorus is fucking fantastic. I know there's no footage of Long Beach sadly, only snippets from Maryland 76 and of course Japan here. If only the bloody management had filmed more shows. RIP Tommy and Jon.

I'm a massive Purple fan and I loved 'Come Taste the Band' and Bollin's individual live tracks but he just didn't cut it live with Purple. Coverdale, Lord, Hughes and the amazing Paicey did their best to make the live sound continue but Tommy was too wasted to maintain the lead guitar standards. God rest your soul, Tommy, you were taken too early - your studio work with Purple was a sign of the potential you had. You are missed but not forgotten.
