While I’m here and one of the few people that have discovered this video before its intention I figure I’ll talk about something you might enjoy looking into - the obscure and with a cult following band, Caroliner. Each of their albums come on vinyl in some weird ass, usually screenprinted packaging including giant parcel envelopes, tablecloths, adult diaper bags, freezedried bread, among other crazy things. The music on the records is even weirder: crazy lofi western noise rock (that’s often been manipulated after the fact) with lyrics from the perspective of a Bull from the 1800s. Each record comes with a crazy detailed lyrics sheet that’s integral to read while listening (especially since it’s pretty much impossible to make out what the lyrics are without reading them). The music is extremely creepy and what I consider to be ‘uncanny valley music’. Their live performances have all the members in ultra-complex dayglo painted cardboard suits with jarring dayglo painted cardboard set pieces and are a real feast on the eyes. Check them out.

I've been really loving The Shadow I Remember by Cloud Nothings, the whole album has this fantastic energy to it but the warm, slightly muddy Albini production, splashes of piano and the slightly more tired vocal style help blunt some of the ferocity to make a really unique vibe. It's the perfect album for moving around on a warm day with a couple of things to contemplate in the meantime, almost like excited melancholy, and it's been a great companion to me since it dropped.

@@Gengu I don't particularly like it so much, I find the songs repetitive and often lacking in harmony or melody, focusing only on the rhythmic aspect thus resulting in empty songs. Excellent list, Oliver, though I’m late to it, as usual.. The only one I’d not heard of from this list was, “For Those I Love”. I went and listened to a few tracks, I knew by the opening it was something special, choked me up quick, then I was left broken down to tears by, “Top Scheme”, which is just a bit too real for me.. I had to put it down, for now. I’ll be listening to this a lot more, it sounds like winner of the most cathartic album of 2021, and cathartic is my tip rn. Several of these I just discovered in the last 2-3 weeks, so shame I didn’t get to see this sooner or maybe they’d be favorites by now. Also, thanks for the reminder to go listen to that Pharoah Sanders/Floating Points more, I’d completely forgotten about that, and I’ll admit that it was bc I felt underwhelmed, but I do need to give it more chance. I hope to see Fucked Up’s, “Year of The Horse” on your year end list… I’m not sure if that was out already or not when you created this, but I definitely recommend it if you haven’t heard it yet. (To be fair, I think it was released in four parts over the last year or two, I can’t remember, but this year it’s all available as a whole.. or I could just be misremembering that… just check it out if you can!) I can’t start recommending now, I’ll be here forever.. ✊✌️❤️♾

I recommend checking out the new Mainliner album “Dual Myths” that released on Riot Season. They’re a psychedelic noise rock band from Japan and one of Kawabata Makoto’s many bands. This album showcases Kawabata’s ultra-freak-out guitar shredding that he’s known for in Acid Mothers Temple along with vocals and bass from Taigen Kawabe from Bo Ningen. Insanely heavy.

Great picks! My favorites so far in no particular order are as follows: Vola - Witness, black midi - Cavalcade, Frost* - Day And Age, Erra - Erra, Suffering Hour - The Cyclical Reckoning, Shame - Drunk Pink Tank, Arooj Aftab - Vulture Prince, Dordeduh - Har, The Armed - Ultrapop and Panopticon - And Again Into The Light! I say this every year but this year in particular is especially insane with many more releases to look forward to!

I would have really like it if the Parranoul album had made the list. Its a great album that is not talked about enough. Other than that great list, my favorites this year have to be Cavalcade and For the First Time

Awesome list, can't wait to dig into these. My most listened to album of 2021, which I haven't seen mentioned yet: The Vernon Spring - A Plane Over Woods

Hiatus Kaiyote-Mood Valiant and Thy Catafalque-Vadak both released last Friday and instantly became two of my favorites of this year. Two other mentions have to be Altin Gün-Yol, and ERRA's self titled

Firstly, thank you! I really appreciate what you do and I’ve discovered so much through you. Now, how’s about: Sons of Kemet - Black to the future You should absolutely love this given your enthusiasm for jazz! It is actually a work of modern genius from start to finish. Bicep - Isles Just absolutely top shelf House. You can’t ask for much more! Illuvia - Iridescence of clouds Ambient richly layered DnB. Simply gorgeous! Not an album but… Octo Octa - She’s calling EP My introduction to her work and I fell in love with it, sparking exploration of her past stuff. Plenty more but that’s too of head!
