This is elite defense. Statically the Celtics were better in the regular season but Golden State are on an entirely different Tier in the IQ department defensively and I don't think GS gets enough credit for how high IQ everyone is from the coaches to the players.

They’re two types of defenses, GS is more IQ based while Boston is a collection of elite athletes. It was a bad matchup for Boston simply bc they’re a team with only a few elite shooters and no elite playmaker. Basically making you make bad decisions

Celtics defense was getting it done in the postseason too. They were giving difficult looks to strong shot creators in the playoffs like KD, Kyrie, Giannis and even Jimmy Butler. All while making it hell for their supporting cast to try be efficient with their touches. Thing is when you get two teams who are the top defenses in the Finals, what can beat those out is how dynamic the offense is.

Draymond in the post interview after game one loss said something like "we're fine." He already knew they're going to win. That game one the Celtics needs a career night from two of their role players just to barely beat the Warriors, he knew they're in big trouble because that ain't happen again.

Great breakdown. You mentioned it at one point, but in game 4 the Warriors finally started closing out and sitting on their right hand forcing them left consistently. That definitely increased the turnovers for Boston late in the series.

I have a question, were they closing out allowing middle even when the opponent was for example on the wing, in order to make them drive to their weaker hand? If so, i didn't notice that and it's crazy stuff, exploiting weaker hand at the nba level is pretty crazy, underutilized strategy in basketball

This is something to really consider moving forward when some younger team rosters mature that have 4 or even 5 guys who are 'decent' at handling the ball. Little details such as making them go left will be an interesting trend on defensive gameplans to see if it stifles those playmakers/shot creators.

"Defense wins championship" is a football dictum; where there are two teams, one playing offense and one playing defense. O and D are different players. In baseball and basketball there is only one team, playing both offense and defense. And it just so happens some players elect not to play defense, and some players are incapable of playing offense. This is where the Dubs shine; having superstars on offense and at the same time playing lights out defense. Like Klay, Wiggs, in addition to now coming into his own, Curry. On Kerr's team, everyone plays defense.

Bet that the Celtics will now be have their own players practice 3s. GSW also has to recruit one player like Draymond. I thought GP2 & Wiggs were trained by Dray & became deadly guards. Add Loon & the combination was lethal. But GSW also needs a player that instinctively knows what to do & how to direct defense, like Dray...ala like Poole for Curry though Poole still has a lot to learn

Their roster is also one of the most versatile for defense. Only the Warriors and the Celtics had lineups where they could throw a smaller/stronger guard against bigs and harass them when they try to attack the basket. It works out because unless there were other bigger guys who can get at the basket, the other bigger defenders can account for the smaller teammates outside.

To be fair Celtics later in the series were committing loads of dumb decisions themselves that were leading to easy turnovers. Not only Tatum's high average of at least 4-5 turnovers per game but the other ball handlers like Brown and Smart. The Warriors easily eat off those turnovers and turn them to points more frequently than the Celtics do theirs. Which was not surprising the Warriors bench later in the series was also scoring more than the Celtics bench.

When Draymond helps, he fills the gap of what main defenders leave. There are four points on a ball handler that a main defender defend lower left and right and upper left and right. Usually lower points are for passes and upper points are for scoring. When the warriors main defense, alows help, he would cover two and leave the other two to the help defender. When Draymond told Poole to funnel the ball handler so help defender can cover two and he can cover the other two points.

Defense wom championships in the Jordan era. In all other eras, including the Steph Curry era, it is the power of the offense that's the main driver. It's not to say that defense in not important, but it's obvious that the showtime Lakers with Magic and the Warriors with Steph are offensive teams. Steph's offense dismantled the Celtic's defense.
@t4d0W

In all eras a strong defense helps win out along with an elite and dynamic offense in the playoffs. The Bulls in the 90s had one of the most versatile defenses at the perimeter and Jordan can take over games on offense. The Warriors have clinched out sloppy games in the playoffs/Finals because their defense keeps them in it and Steph's dynamic scoring puts them in a position to win late in the 4th. Hell the Lakers won in 2020 not only because teams couldn't answer a healthy Lebron/AD, but their defense solved various match ups.

Celtics players for some weird reason are dangerous when they drive right and make poor decisions when they drive left. Some players can't shoot leaning to the right and vice versa. Celts Achilles heel primary Is the left. When warriors realized this, they kept funneling them to that side. You'd notice Tatum misread the defense, jump in the air before making a pass and take highly contested layups, same with Brown, these led to turnovers and poor shot selection because they took away their strength.

@@pablobreezy1451 Wow! That's a good observation, Pablo! Thanks! By the way, do you think, the Celts has the capability to adjust on in an NBA Finals? Or do you think due to the limited time, they couldn't?

@@SandauxBeats they Swept Nets Won Bucks and Heats in 7. So I believe they're capable of making adjustments. They did in game 1 vs GSW, game 3 in the 4th Qtr. Difference in warriors series is they had Steph Curry and being battle tested, Golden state just had more experience. Strength in numbers is real. Curry's effect on any defense means if you play him with the drop like celts did, he can shoot from the parking lot. Blitz him with Double teams, Draymond Green is now able to be a playmaker like he did in game 5 and late in the 4th Q of game 4. Summary, Steph is an offence on his own.

@@pablobreezy1451 That's good observation. Do you think fatigue and having less depth in rotation were factors, too? Also, why do you think Celtics didn't use the Box and 1 defense? Or if they did, would it work? My apologies with the questions. I'm just really interested and curious with this series. 🙂

@@SandauxBeats one of their key issues was the lack of a point guard. The defense warriors played on them was highly underrated. They lacked depth as well. Their bench became a non factor after game one. Grant Williams,Pritchard and Derrick White couldn't buy buckets again. Raptors used box and 1 D on Steph especially when Klay and KD were out. Box and 1 was effective there because there were no other scorers. If Celtics used it, GSW still had Klay, Wiggins, Poole and Porter who could score. It's effective vs teams with one primary shooter. Their best bet would have been to switch everything like Houston did in 19. But Celtics defended primarily man to man after they hit a run of form. They changed their D in game 5 to stop Steph and Wiggins with other role players had themselves a feast.

Now I knew I wasn’t the only one that thinks Draymond Green’s main talent is his defense more than offense. He’s pretty much the modern Dennis Rodman!

Thanks for this analysis. It is important that we look at the numbers and the video to truly determine how the Warriors defeated the Celtics and not run with a 'narrative' of what they did. Miami's defence gave Boston a ton of trouble because all of Miami's players are 'stealers' who have good hands in isolation and in passing lanes. But \\Miami's D is best when it is given time to 'set up' and stay stationary this is why when Boston started moving around its' shooters and making early passes before Miami got set in place that the D in Miami got scrambled and it allowed easier passes and plays to be made. I think that Rob Williams played a crucial part in the Miami series to slow dosn Butler cause his midrange shooting gets nullified when bigs follow him around there and Butler has a weak game from downtown. Horford roasted the Bucks from Downtown because he knew that Lopez and Antetokoumpo were reluctant to switch to a popping big like him. Then he switched back and forth between popping and painting based on who was in the game and who was at the perimeter. It was Duran't terrible offensive playmaking that allowed Boston to mop the floor with them. Durant is a born and raised off ball kind of guy and him becoming THE onball player of the Nets is just bad offence cause he doesn't have good decision making in difficult spots and his playmaking i\when on-ball is really weak.

Let's just say what REALLY happened in this series : Boston's coach ran into a MASTERMIND COACH in Steve Kerr....and he wasn't prepared. Plus....Boston didn't have much of a BENCH....and Coach Kerr knew this and used that against Boston. FATALITY !!!

If you think that Curry sucks on D you're a clown...if you think that the Warriors are just an offensive team you're a clown, they've been among the top defensive teams for 9 years(not counting '20). Actually, ignore what I said, their D is awful (I want their d to be overlooked). Warrior D is bad.

Celts seemed sluggish when going for rebounds. Or not even contesting rebounds. Seriously, their conditioning as a team was lacking.

This is an important element of and side effect based on the high off ball motion offense the warriors run. If you analyze the impact of their defensive intensity and the amount of running to recover to properly defend Curry, Klay and Poole, the net effect is running 2x a normal game for starters. It really shows in 4th Q offensive efficiency. Tired legs from chasing Klay and Curry all game who are known as the best distance runners in the game.

ALOOOOOOOT of basketball knowledge thrown in this video. WOOOOOOW like basketball is not all about shooting and highlights. Players can create something by just moving around. And warriors are very skilled team to do it

Hey guys, I heard a lot about the lack of final experience. I am curious on how important experience is. Isn't the final just another playoff series with more pressure? Also, with the Celtics, they had made a lot of deep plyoff runs for the past few years. Shouldn't they already have enough experience?
