Yeah, I think Todd Howard and the original dev team on Arena, Daggerfall, and Morrowind actually cared about their games and were dedicated to making art rather than a "product" - but somewhere between Oblivion and Fallout 3 (which were still decent enough games, but saw the first hints of corporate greed bleeding through), the company morphed into something bigger, more unwieldy, more profit-oriented. Of course, it is possible that Todd fooled us all from the beginning, at it really was just all about the profits for him all along - and the only reason he didn't do it in the earlier titles is because he couldn't get away with it, while the company was that small - but I think, if Todd himself didn't care back then, the dev team still had enough creative freedom to create their vision the way they saw it, without too much interference from money-grubbing investors (or Todd) - that creative freedom may have been what was lost when the company got bigger.

A former Bethesda dev was talking about how Todd got the nickname Seagull because he'd "fly" around shitting on everyone's work and ideas. Apparently no one wanted to work on FO76 so people were forced off their projects. It was originally a demo to show how they can get multiplayer to work on their engine, but since there was such a huge gap between FO4 and their next title (Starfield) Zenimax, their parent company back then, needed them to get something out that could make money in the meantime. So you had a game built on a janky tech demo, that no one wanted to work on, that was only made to milk money from players... so it really isn't surprising how it turned out.

There were some other things too. There was a “Mr. Handy” robot that would clean your base and such. They admitted that they forgot to put it in the game when it was finished and that it was suppose to be a free thing for you to have, however they then said they would be putting it into the game that spring/summer but would now be charging players for it. They were asking players for suggestions on how to make the game more fun and some players had great ideas. They decided to create those ideas in the game…..but put them in the shop as well. They came out with the “Fallout First” which was to be a one year membership deal that would allow you to have your own worlds and customize how you liked. However there were tons of bugs where people lost their stuff and people were able to join private worlds, steal everything, and leave.

When the game was being made they said many times that it would be a game for mods to be done like how people have done in other games. However when it came out they went against that. They then heard about a glitch that was ruin I guess the game for many players that someone was using to I believe kill their characters. So this guy and his team spent numerous hours trying to figure out exactly how this glitch worked and reported it to Bethesda telling all the information they had gathered. However, instead of thanking them for bringing a harmful glitch to their attention and instructing them how to fix it, they instead gave them PERMANENT BANS claiming they had “abused the glitch” by trying to figure out how it worked over hundreds of attempts. The guy that actually used it to harm others tho was given like a 1-3 day ban. The guy got so angry that he took down the map and refused to have anything to do with Bethesda.

Because the game I started playing was genuinely enjoyable to explore and the playerbase is honestly one of the more fun communities I've interacted with. With people going out of their way to help newbies and make sure everyone gets a shot at nice loot, and not caring if they have to carry a group event because a bunch of baby characters show up. Yeah some of the atomic shop prices are a little intense but they give away plenty for free from achievements and always have a big ongoing scoreboard where you get lots of cool stuff including atoms and new camp stuff that would usually be purchased for atoms. Honestly people who are still shit talking it today are either completely jaded by the launch or just have a thing for being complainy. I completely unironically would suggest it to others if they were going to start playing now.

I mean fuck, they even brought back that HORRENDOUS skin textures for humans, which look like they had blood orange skinsuits.

I loved 3 and New Vegas (yes, I know that's Obsidian), and could find some good things about 4, but I knew something was gonna go wrong when 76 was gonna be an MMO; all the time praying to be wrong. But I wasn't; Fuck me, was I right and hated being right. The idea for a Fallout game in West Virginia with all the cryptids and new monsters was interesting and fun, especially to a guy that loved cryptod stories like Me. And to hear all the crashing failures after graduating high school just made being right hurt even more, because the company that made so many fun moments for me was just going in for a quick and shallow as dishwater cash grab.
@DarkCT11 ай бұрын
@@b3rz3rk3r9 I can imagine, the company that made some of the things you loved most crashing is what tore me from buying into brands. for me it was Blizzard. I played the earlier games with my dad, but he didn't get to see just how many ways they yanked the chains of their fanbase, especially diablo and starcraft. I have kept myself from their games because of how bad they were handling things before they decided to functionally snap a classic like warcraft 3 for profits. But modern companies know that most people are fickle and short of memory and sight, soo.... doesn't matter what they've done in the past "it's fine now". I disagree. Bethesda thought this was a good thing to release, and messed up in all of these ways. at that point you'd have to do a series of stellar games for me to even think about trusting you if you were a game studio. many people however? nah. still gonna buy.

This sort of thing almost exclusively seems to happen with big game companies, where there are either too many people making poorly-informed decisions, or because the company is simply managed by people who only measure the value of their products in how much money they make. It's so easy to vilify companies, but its important to remember that companies are run by *people* , and people, generally speaking, do NOT go out of their way to screw other people over, at least from their point of view. If your job is to market a game that you have no investment in whatsoever, aside from potentially wanting to keep your position in the company intact, why the hell should you care whether or not something is just "acceptable" , or "outstanding". Do you know the guys in the "game design" office personally? Does it reflect bad on you that the marketing ends up misleading, or actively malicious? You're just too anonymous and disposable in a big company. ... but *game developers* are some of the most freaking passionate, brilliantly amazing people you will ever meet, and they do not deserve all the shit they get to hear indirectly as a consequence of these little "shareholder theatrics" that certain companies tend to get up to. I guess what I'm trying to say is mainstream companies are like peacocks; trying to impress, appease and reassure their investors to invest more in them, which from the outside can sometimes look utterly ridiculous, such as with the current woke trends, which is really just companies catering to "ESG" ratings.

Let's not forget that the Nuka Cola edition of the Power Armor helmet caused some people to get pretty damn ill because of fungus infection. Dunno what happened exactly, but my guess is that it was made from such cheap and shitty materials that it literally caught fungus and people who wore it got sick. If someone knows more, or has better info, be free to correct me, I dunno everything about this little tidbit myself.

I was born in 89 and didn't invest in online gaming until I was 18 when Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare released in 2007. It was a few years of playing with school friends and online friends I met. I got the hardened edition of MW2 at launch in 2009 at a GameStop midnight launch with friends and a month later sold it to a friend that was at the launch with me. If I drank like I'm doing now. I'd give him the game. I didn't need the money at the time, but he bought it fast. I can't get back into online gaming and the bottom line doesn't matter when you invest in destroying the family that doesn't want to ascend. Haha

I'd definitely recommend the Engoodening of No Man's Sky after this one. They're basically two sides of the same coin, especially as far as the developers are concerned.

what poed me about the atom shop was of course the prices, they could have lowered the prices to a reasonable amount, and people would have bought it. but nope they had to gouge the customer.

actually the game is decent now. they patched and changed a LOT. I enjoyed it for 300 hours, now im simply bored with it. Does have some neat things previous fallout games didnt have like the elexiers that really make a difference. Most fun is to be had in the first 60-is levels. After that its kinda grinding away

300 hours is some quality time for the game 😀 glad that it eventually got fixed so that it was enjoyable 🙂

oh my god people its happening, oh god its happening, everyone to battle stations!
That refund policy is not better anywhere else the max time for steam and Epic Games store front is 2h of play time and less than 2 weeks of "owing it" whether its downloaded or not. Some developers make the tutorial/prologue or just make the first 2h of the game grindy to get to the main game and they are unable to refund it because of the store fronts policy on return.

No man’s sky was an indie studio getting swept up by the hype machine. Fallout 76 was a AAA studio fueling the hype machine while knowing very well they won’t deliver on what they promised.

I was so glad that I actually GOT a refund on launch day. First got an auto-reply denying it, but I answered that with a mail saying that I had downloaded the files, but had never launched the game, and they accepted that.

Fun fact in the game you can earn atoms for the shop but one of them is just a bad idea in general play the game for 7600 hours for only 80 atoms, with that amount of time put into it should net you a free years subscription to fallout first.
@aohige6 күн бұрын
The biggest difference is that No Man's Sky never charged extra for more content. No DLC, no microtransactions, no in-game store, nothing. Every update since its release 8 years ago has been free. Not a single penny charged. Whereas Fallout 76 tried to squeeze more and more money out of its users constantly.

He missed out the best con Bethesda did pay an extra 100 dollars a year to play the game on a private server that wasn't private and it also steels your hard earned high level gear if you leave it in your personal storage space
