He was great but by the same token it shouldn't distract from the rest of the principle cast who were all great. It was an excellent idea to have all the main characters as 20 somethings instead of a bunch of middle aged scientists, pilots and workers, what a better way to restart the franchise with new ideas than to have the energy of youth as the center of the story. I myself consider this to be a better movie than all others in the franchise save for the original of course, Aliens was nothing more than an action movie using the original Alien story as the backdrop, but Romulus returned it to a horror movie which is something none of the other movies in the franchise managed to recreate from the original.

I have mixed feelings on it. The fact that there’s no Queen but there are face huggers could simply be attributed to the fact that the station is filled with face huggers because the company made so many (as seen on the conveyor belt). The main thing that disputes the idea of a Queen seems to be that face huggers were developed from the Big Chap DNA and the face huggers impregnate via a genetic implanting vs an alien embryo…but its vague enough it could still be some mix of the two.

I thought it was kinda dumb personally. It cocooned itself in a bunch of organic material from nothing. Where did it get the mats for that, how did it do it pretty much instantly? At that size? Would’ve been cool if it just kept doing that, like atleast twice, to show that it was a small chest buster, then it was a little bigger like big dog sized, then did it a final time to reach full growth. Cause it was definitely premature when the guy shocked the hell out of it, but it went from planted embryo, to chest buster, to full size in like a matter of an hour (from the characters perspective). That’s roughly what the timeline was from face hugger latching on to fully grown threat.

The facehugger that implanted Navarro should never have even succeeded given it was only attached for around 3 - 4 minutes before they got it off. That is WAY too short given what’s established in the other films and even worse, given that the implantation was successful, the facehugger should have DIED! Did the writers never watch the other movies? Not only that, the fact that Navarro then gives birth to the chestburster not 10 fucking minutes after being implanted? That is NOT how that works. But then the writers needed that to be the case or the rest of the film doesn’t take place. It’s such an awful mess.

And if you still don’t like the idea that’s the main evolution of it without involvement of any experimentation, then you could say it’s just an offshoot evolutionary path or something. Either way, I just think it’s neat.

I do love that "Stay away from her" was reused, it did make me smile, but it felt very strange coming from Andy. It left me feeling very "Bro can I copy your homework?" "Sure just change it up a little". As far as effects go the Ian Holm deep fake was the only bit that had me thinking they should have taken another method than that, it was atrocious to see in Imax, the worst part? the mouth! it looked so copy pasted on top of the rest! As far as the films story goes I feel there wasn't enough emphasis on the desperation to escape the planet. The Rain wasn't angry enough about being manipulated over and over again by the company, all we really got was exposition of how miserable the characters where, nobody actually seemed that oppressed. Also given that at least two of the characters seemed to have free access to a ship whenever they wanted it seemed absurd that ex boyfriend had never taken Rain up to just see the sun at any point before? that would be basic bitch territory to impress a partner right? Bjorn was there to give us someone we were looking forward to seeing killed off, what with his constant unprovoked abuse towards Andy. I actually really liked Andy's portrayal a lot, that the damaged synthetic felt more vulnerable and human than any of the other characters in the film. I kind of wish that his software repairs had remained after the chip was removed, minus the overriding "do it for the company" directive of course, although that did leave me wondering how software and hardware interact in this universe. Why did Andy revert back to his previous self? Maybe I missed an explanation about when he crashes and needs to be reboot he loses the updates? That would have been a nice way to tie in Rain going back to save him both physically and metaphorically. Everything is great until we hit trying to tie in Prometheus and Covenant. The instant Kay said she was pregnant I knew she was there purely because of that, her sole characters purpose is freaky birth sequence. She honestly serves nothing to the plot and is just there as a vehicle for grotesque hybrid fodder, which in itself felt like a weird amalgam of Prometheus and Alien Resurrection. The two sequences I loved where the most original ideas in the film (Clearly Ridley let go of the wheel for 5 minutes so Alvarez could cook). They creepy hot terror hallway of nothing but facehuggers actually made them scary again! The suspense of silence and seeing then waiting, twitching at any sound, wondering if our characters body temp would drop or if even the sound of sweat dripping would set them off! Then there's the glorious Zero-G Acid tunnel Vortex, chefs kiss to that! As if only worrying about being caught in the spray was bad enough now here's a whole swirling pool of death for you to somehow navigate through, oh and btw did we mention you're on a timer too? I'll be adding that to my list of nightmare fuel thanks Alvarez. I also think that being told how everything got the way it did sounds like I somehow missed a fantastic Alien movie in the series. Big chaps crucified remains (yes we see that religious metaphor very clever) with harpoon still embedded looming over everything felt very fan service but also that's it? that's all we got? felt wasted in a way. Something that I feel might have helped tie the movie to the overall "evil company" narrative might have been to have had the damaged station intentionally directed towards the mining colony. They obviously new the Xenomorphs could survive extreme heat and pressures so perhaps as an override Rook could have sent the station on a collision course with the planet as a way of seeding the planet with more specimens for company collection at a later date. It did feel very odd that somehow nobody else had spotted the station given its size and proximity, having it being intentional would have gotten round that and been very on brand. Sorry about the huge rant, I honestly really wanted to to enjoy the film but it ended up feeling like they went for copying lots of ideas from the franchise to appeal to fans rather than push boundaries. Trying to Prove you're a fan by rewriting and showing the fans everything they loved about the previous entries doesn't make them think you're a genius, Star Wars: The Force Awakens proves that. Also Fede, Ridley will never be your Senpai! You should have made your own movie! XD

Totally agree. Here is my posting in case you missed it. YAWN!!! I was sadly disappointed in this film. It was a hot mess. I feel it was over-hyped with the marketing campaign. In the end, the plot could have been written on the back of a postage stamp. There were so many plot holes and I kept on predicting what would happen next. I understand the homage to Ian Holm (aka Ash/Rook), but felt this was to the detriment of the film, which surely should come first. It was too contrived and I knew it was "Ash" as soon as I saw the body on the floor. It would have been much more effective and chilling if a different synthetic had actually said the same lines and directives, which would have emphasised Weyland's intentions more powerfully. The CGI for Rook was absolutely a shocker, given what resources are available to do this, which again underlines why they should have gone with a new character. If you can't do it well, then don't do it at all. Also, the gestation of the aliens was so fast which made it unbelievable. I am confused as to why the face-huggers couldn't get through the glass. In the original ALIEN, the face-hugger could get through Kane's glass helmet, but not get through glass in ALIENS nor here it seems. The characters filled the usual line-up of likeable/unlikable characters. For once, it would have been good to see a male character play the "hero" role so as to go against type. But in the end, I just wished they could have all been killed to put them out of their misery and the audience's misery too. Also, maybe I missed it, but why was Kay not in cryo sleep once she was put in the cryotube and hence suspending the birth of the hybrid. The final hybrid was again ridiculous and the audience I was part of, actually laughed out loud. A few thought it was crossed with Voldemort. Really, again, the CGI was appalling in this film. I really do think it is time they stop milking this franchise for all it's worth and leave it alone, but then the $$$$ are too tempting. I for one, will not spend one more $ on seeing an ALIEN film. I know that a lot of people think this was the best film of 2024, but for me, it just fell flat. And I have watched and re-watched every ALIEN film and forgiven many sins. But this was one sin too many. As an aside, I will say that ANDY was amazing and brilliantly portrayed which emphasises even more what could have been happening in this film if they had stop pandering to fan-service and been brave and original.

@@galex5060you haven’t touched on the more egregious errors in the script! I also find it ridiculous that Rook and his team of scientists apparently studied the xenomorph at a molecular level right down to its very DNA but the film tells us they were ‘surprised’ that it had acid for blood??!! That’s preposterous! Given how much bio engineering took place, they absolutely WOULD have known about that. Don’t you also love that we’re just supposed to accept that not a single scientific finding was shared, reported on or communicated with ANYONE outside of that ship during all of Rook and the scientists findings? The scientific discovery of the aliens, creating facehuggers, bio engineering the black goo etc was apparently never shared with anyone at WY or at a governmental level, and nobody even knows what went down on this station that must have housed hundreds of personnel? Nobody went out to see what happened with them all and check on the status of that ship? Okay film. And then to add insult to injury, Up until now we assumed there was no updates or transference of data, but at the end rook casually updates HQ on all the events that went down on this station. Which completely undermines ‘Aliens’ meaning the events of aliens simply cannot happen after this film.
@danielc71312 ай бұрын
We should count ourselves lucky that the writers didn’t decide to pluck Ash’s destroyed body from the vacuum of space and somehow insert that into this film 😅. I guarantee you they would have thought about it. The very fact that Big Chap somehow ‘survived’ is another absurdity the writers just want us to simply accept much like Palpatine appearing in a similar broken mess (TROS) with zero logic or establishment.

Am i dumb or was there no eggs in romulus. They were all genetically created/fossils. Clones. Eventually the xenos obviously evolve (or one of them births as) a queen for the sake of being able to reproduce themselves. Until then, the reason there are so many is because wayland is creating them (or at the very least harvesting and preserving them) but it was pretty clearly stated through the environment of Romulus that the humans had been experimenting with the xenos. When they find all the eggs in the prequels, that's because they've been genetically engineered too. Its a symbiotic fungus/spore. It takes many forms and evolves over the timeline of the franchise.

It's funny because I don't think Ridley Scott had as much to do with Alien's success as you all think. He was just the director of the film. Sure he has a lot to do with the look and feel of the film, but I don't believe the story itself came from him. That was Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett. Not to mention H.R. Geiger's design of creature and sets. I don't understand why Ridley Scott, or James Cameron for that matter, think that they alone are responsible for all the success of whatever movie they direct that just happens to become iconic. He was just a part of what made that film awesome. Its very possible that James Cameron had nothing to do with the creation of the queen alien but is taking credit for it from some concept artist or writer.

George Lucas didn't like The Force Awakens and said little else about Disney Star Wars (seemed to like Rogue One better, calling The Last Jedi "Beautifully made" was light shade. Everyone knows it's 'beautifully made' but did he like it). He's the creator of the universe he's allowed to dislike new additions to his baby. It’s simple. The Engineers in Prometheus already knew the consequences of misusing the black fluid because they went through it before in their history. But just like Waylan/Yutani corp, they knew this fluid held great power as a resource, so they continued experimenting with it til they unlocked the secret to use it safely as a tool for their evolution and a weapon. THAT is why they have a mural of a “xenomorph” on that ship as a terrible symbol/reminder to respect the power of this resource or else it will bring ruin upon them in the form of what we saw in Prometheus and Covenant. I guarantee this is exactly what Scott and the writers intended. Sure it’s ambiguous, but it’s not difficult to imagine. And I know it doesn’t explain the origin of the fluid, but fine! It took decades for us to learn of the xenomorph origins and people complained that “we never asked for that”, but now those same people are asking about the black fluid origin. Maybe we’ll learn that in the future 🤷🏻♂️ I don’t care regardless. Just give me a good movie and I’m happy. I do very much appreciate everything about the black fluid inclusion in the Aliens mythos.

Even if it ate its mother, there's no way it could have metabolized that much organic matter so quickly. In Romulus, the company knows about the xenomorphs and are actively 3d printing facehuggers but decades later in "Aliens", it seems they forgot all about them because they did not believe Ripley's report and sent out colonists to live in lv 226. You would think that they sent them there with an ulterior motive but the colonists had been living there without incident for years and the engineer ship was only discovered because the antagonist accidentally signed off on a random greedy colonist who wanted to keep whatever he will find on the planet. What gives??
@seth86293 ай бұрын
Well, the company is straight up lying in Aliens.
@Tracks20083 ай бұрын
LV-426 or Acheron. Also all indications are they already knew of the Xenomorphs by the events of the first film. However they didn't know where the ship was in Aliens until they found Ripley.

I want to know why the rat turned it to what it did and Kay didn't. Also I want answers on the blue mist. Had to add this on, whats up with the electricity in that one Bjorn zapped. Some people say the tip burned off inside the alien head but you can see it just melted the tip. Why does the scar keep sparking

Kay was killed by her offspring that's why, or maybe she died when Rain froze the whole ship with freeze gas. But otherwise she would have continued to mutate I think. Actually we don't see what happened to her body in the end. Maybe she's still alive?
@Choiceone133 ай бұрын
@@danielpeckham5520 good point about the freezing.

@@danielpeckham5520I don’t think she survived. At the end of the movie, Rain records a log before she goes into cryo sleep, indicating she was the sole survivor of her ship.

Watched this in Dolby Cinema at Odeon Luxe, West End in London last night. It was good. Rewatching it in IMAX with Laser GT at the weekend. Will catch-up on all of these breakdown videos of the movie after that. Thank you Paul.

James Cameron > Ridley Scott
@DonMiguelLaBestia3 ай бұрын
James Cameron is better at scriptwriting, action, and raw entertainment. Ridley is better at visuals, themes, and artistry. I once heard someone say that Ridley’s only as good as the script and that is so on point. It’s a shame they never collaborated, they would have complemented each other insanely well!

It is nice to see kids in the movie rather than adults. Its a breath of fresh air.

- The "Alien" franchise has become fragmented since "Alien 3," making the stories and prequels hard to follow. - The aliens are now depicted as mutants. - Ripley's character has become somewhat of a parody. - Ridley Scott seems unwilling to acknowledge James Cameron's successful sequel or pay homage to it in "Prometheus" and "Covenant." - The movies have taken a religious direction, straying from the original concept of space terror where humans are the prey. - The franchise now focuses on mutating the alien from a black goo, which feels convoluted and vague. - The prequels' narrative is about being the creator, but it lacks exploration of encounters with other species in space. - The desire for sequels is like awaiting the next chapter of a book, with the shock of exceeding a viewers expectations. - "Romulus" did this but faltered with poor CGI for Rooks and making him the villain for the whole movie, we had Ash before. - Ian Holm, a great actor, had his character poorly executed, it should been a cameo that's it. - The mutant alien at the end resembles the ending of "Alien Resurrection," with a also different mother figure giving birth to a creature and then dying in the end - "Prey" is a fresh concept without obvious or direct callbacks to the original, it's done subtle.

How are you calling Prey subtle? They say the "If it bleeds we can kill it." line from the original and give an origin to the flintlock pistol from Predator 2. How is Prey any diferent from Alien Romulus in subtlety?

@@Boricua_User146 how many obvious callbacks in Alien Romulus. The gun training, get away from you bi*ch, Rook/ Ash, the mutant baby at the end and ejecting the creature into space. Come on!?! Too much. Prey was set when the French invaded Americas the Predator looks different, if any animal killed would bleed something right. How Andy knows the alien is female .... Or any pronouns... It's too on the nose! The movie is good deserve to be number 3 in the best alien listed movies ... But there were some problems! 😕 Overall

Great Alien film. If like me, you love the Alien movies, this is a must see There are lots of connections to all previous films, but it works as a stand alone also The film pays great homage to the originals and it canons nicely within the time it is set (Between the first and second films by Ridly scott) For me, it gets a 9 out of 10

I think it turned her baby into a flawed Promethian half xenomorph hybrid. A healed human DNA strand would probably result in a promethian. And by Promethian I just mean giant annunaki-like white person.
