I say this as Spider-Man is one of my three favorite fictional characters and as a massive fan of the first Insomniac game. These kinds of fans just shouldn’t be able to speak their minds like this and it makes Spider-Man look bad from their behavior/takes. It’s even worse by the fact that Spider-Man is an embodiment of responsibility and compassion, which toxic fans of him do not remember whenever they talk down to people they disagree with. As someone who’s played these games multiple times because I definitely enjoy them and being a Spider-Man fan and everything, I agree that these games have faults and I do agree that they are good at the same time. I’m not someone who’s overly joyful about these games, and I’m definitely not someone who’s incredibly hateful over them either. The thing that really annoyed me about the fanbase on these games is the fact that people were sending threats to Insomniac over the Raimi Suit back in Spider-Man 1. I personally couldn’t care less about what cosmetics are in the game but yes I’m happy they are there too. I thought it was ridiculous that people got so bent out of shape over things like that. This even happens with the talk of the hopefully upcoming DLCs. On one hand I really want Insomniac to cook and release these DLCs when they are 100% ready but on the other hand as well, it would be nice to have a little bit more communication on what’s going on but hey I’m no game developer so I don’t know how it all works but yeah in the end it’s just a game and there are people that need to chill out on both sides of the fence.

Yeah because I’d rather they get their stuff back together before expecting anymore big updates. It just gets on my nerves when the toxic side of the community is so desperate for a DLC and don’t consider the fact that these devs are people too and these things are not instant. I think this game gets more crap from people than it deserves but it’s not perfect. I think the reason it wasn’t a huge leap forward is because of the deadline and also because with the gameplay I think it’s one of those things where if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it and use what already works and there’s always room for improvement.

​@bryaneastvold3491 The reason why people are so desperate for DLC is because of how lacking the game felt. The story was rushed (even Brian Interhar acknowledged this) and relied too heavily on unoriginal cliches, replayable challenges like the Sable bases, Screwball missions, hideouts were removed, Stealth and random crimes had little to no improvements, and so many iconic villains were either killed off or reformed. Back in 2018, major DLC episodes were released each month after release. SMP2 launched without as much content than their previous 2 SM games, yet they still charged $10 extra and haven't added anything significant since then. If we keep defending practices like this, it won't be long until Insomniac becomes Ubisoft.

Then the fact that people like Evan (SpideySquad) who honestly just praises anything and everything about Spider-Man 2 . I think a big reason why Spider-Man 2 was such a letdown for many people is because the first game felt like a breath of fresh air when it came out. We were starting to get tired of seeing Peter Parker as a young and inexperienced Spider-Man in the MCU or the comics destroying everything after One More Day that actually seeing a new version of the character as a 23 year old adult in his prime was an exciting premise. I thought we were going back to a traditional Spider-Man like the old comics. Maybe Insomniac could do the symbiote saga justice and tell a proper Eddie Brock Venom story that we haven’t seen in any Spider-Man media since Spectacular. My fanboy imagination ran wild. But Spider-Man 2 ended up being everything wrong with the symbiote saga and was a prime example of how not to handle Venom.

Not just that, but a lot of the time with the symbiote saga that Jay had mentioned is that since the '94 cartoon, every single Spider-Man media where Peter gets the symbiote in some way shape or form HAS to make him angry and more aggressive. To me, that is getting so overused and annoying to the point where I would rather see a take from the ORIGINAL symbiote comic run and what that does. Not this constant idea of Peter getting aggressive all the damn time.

​@@Mr5ickness In Spider-Man 2's defense, Peter's lashing out due to grief and exhaustion, which is a different take on it than I've seen in any recent stuff involving the symbiote. It's a different framing device than the typical "black costume make Peter angy Bully Maguire reference ha ha ha" thing that's been going on for a while. Do I think they rushed it a bit? Yeah, this definitely felt more like a Kraven game than a Venom game for most of it. But in their defense, Sony was rushing them to get it out, so I give them a little grace for the pacing. And also, it would've felt weird for Peter to end the game with the symbiote still on him in my opinion, regardless of whether or not they advertized Venom. That would've felt been super unsatisfying because that would mean the game essentially didn't have an ending, or at the very least that they cut the story off in the middle (like with Across the Spider-Verse and Dune). Insomniac was kindof in a catch 22 there.

@@Mr5ickness pretty much everything after the ‘94 cartoon was directly influenced by it in some way over the last 20+ years. It’s to the point where the actual comics pre-One More Day are no longer being adapted outside of subtle nods or easter eggs. Peter lifting the debris in Homecoming or the first mission of Spider-Man PS4 being obvious references to If This be my Destiny. It’s just sad to me that some of the best Peter Parker stories like Kraven’s Last Hunt and The Death of Jean DeWolff will probably never get proper adaptations and we’ll keep seeing more lazy friend turned foe storylines for the 1,000th time.

When Insombore says they won't add the black suit in the first game as a skin because they wanted to do it justice. We get the game and it's literally just a suit. Nothing differentiates it from regular Spidey in gameplay. Even surge mode can be used on any suit.i did not feel different swinging, fighting and the most Peter did that was mean was just be more direct than he normally would. What a waste. Can't wait till they pass the IP to some other studio. The gameplay is repetitive and shallow too.

That was a bummer because I liked using the Spider-Man 3 black suit and go full Bully Maguire beating the shit out of thugs while in surge mode. Hopefully they’ll add an option to allow you to keep suits for surge mode instead of being locked to the symbiote suit.

I hate what the Spidey fandom has become. It is so toxic. Even more toxic than fans of DC, Marvel and even the Star Wars fandom is do vitriolic to the point of tedium. To this day, I find it hilarious that the infamous Spidey fanboy and wannabe director Gavin J Konopp made a fan film called Spider-Man Lotus and really bigged himself up as a savant of Spider-Man in media and his take on the story was going to be super comic accurate and a love letter to Spidey. But that was mostly in aesthetics and not much else tbh. Then the movie was put online to not just ridicule because of the controversies that went on behind the scenes due to racism, sexism and bigotry as well as mistreatment to the actors, VFX team and storyboard artists (yeah, GJK is a piece of shit) but it was critically panned and roasted by both online critics and audiences. I mean, it was a waste of time as well as a waste of $100,000 worth of funding on Kickstarter by several donators who thought the film was gonna be amazing. It felt like a massive, sleazy scam. I mean where did that money go, Gavin? To pay your film school debt? He basically made a bad and pretentious fan film out of spite just to brag to Jon Watts, Kevin Feige and maybe even Insomniac Games to say "Look at my masterpiece. I'm a Spider-Man fan. I can do this better than you" and the result was a boring, soulless, edgy and badly written/produced fan project that misunderstood Spider-Man’s world and was hated by everybody, and not just because of racism, but because of bad writing, character assassination, bad camera work, bad lighting, dodgy cgi in some parts, pretentious artistry, sluggish pacing, over reliance on flashbacks, misleading messaging and just pure spite and ego. Pathetic.

I think part of the reason, for some at least, feel they have to hate the game is because of the fact that Sweet Baby Inc had involvement with the game. I don't like them as much as the next guy. I think they genuinely don't care about the gaming industry and only care about pushing an agenda that follows their own, but I'm not gonna immediately dismiss something that's "woke" just because they helped in the games development. An example, they helped during the development of God Of War Ragnarok. I really enjoyed that game, but my biggest complaint was that I wish they didn't wrap up the norse saga with just two games. I wish we had gotten more. However, one complaint I saw was they hated how Freya, a woman, told Odin to bow his queen. It was an act of dominance, not because she's a "strong independent woman", but because she's finally getting her payback for all the terrible shit Odin had done that characters have either explained or we saw first hand. But people still complained about it being woke for some reason and that it was stupid. I'm not saying you can't criticize the games story, but I didn't feel that was something worth being upset about. In conclusion, some fans have legitimate reasons for hating something but go about it the wrong way, and others praise a game far too much and it's idiotic to not even acknowledge what it could've done better.

You can't criticise something without shaking a hornet's nest of fans who are ready to call you every explicit name under the sun for criticising something they love. And quite frankly, this is the problem I have with fandoms especially in this modern age. Free speech is supposed to a thing, respect is supposed to be a thing. I'm not saying fandoms should be a coalition of yes-men but the fans overall should be respectful to others even if other fan's opinions differ even if its just a respectable nod emoji. Because to me, nothing is perfect; everything has its imperfections and that's okay. And the more I think of insomniac's Spider-Man 2; the more imperfections I think of... For example; I really got fed up of Peter's attitude in the Symbiote so I basically sped run the story up to the moment he finally loses it so his attitude improves ... I agree. I still give it a 9/10 but I understand that Spiderman 2 has flaws. 1. The second and third act feel a bit rushed 2. The high school side quests are terrible 3. (Personal nitpick) we can’t go into Peters house anytime we want. Plus I give the first game a 9/10 but even that one has issues. The main problem is MJ. Her attitude was awful in the first game(Plus her stealth missions were a drag. Including Miles’s Rhino stealth mission). Plus some story missions were unnecessary(for example the apartment eviction, and the scorpion poison hallucination). And finally Silver Sable just kicking Peter and always getting away with it(so annoying).

I love the second game but man you can tell that a lot of things were cut from the story(even without looking at leaks). It would be cool to get a directors cut for multiple portions of the story. I guarantee that agent venom, Peters rage, and the final boss fight with venom had more parts. Maybe that could happen after they’re done with the DLC and other things. Ya never know. Like an anniversary edition or something.

Love this game (maybe that’s a hot take but Idrc) but hate a lot of the fandom. Since the first game with the Raimi suit incident I’ve had distaste for it. You criticize it, and they shit on you, but then they decide they want something from the game, and they do it in the WORST way. I agree with you, I feel like these days everything is super polarized, you either love something or hate it with every part of your body and it's the same about spider man, be it with animation, the comics themselves (where they are in shit thanks to Zeb Wells), movies or games in the case of SM2 it was a curious case for me because when I heard that insomniac was going to adapt the symbiote arc and Kraven's last hunt it was a delirium in my head the potential was enormous but they took Kraven's best story which is role reversal where it is not Peter who breaks Kraven's ego, showing that he is not the absolute predator, there is someone better than him in every way, and Kraven proving to Peter that he would be a better Spider-Man than he ever was and then killing himself is good, but insominiac liked the part where he kills himself more and in the end Kraven comes down to this, a one-dimensional character who just wants to die, while Venom is a confused character, I never knew who was in control one time it was harry and then the symbiote, it didn't seem like they were one, and another thing insomniac didn't understand that venom as a villain he is guided and born in hate, whether by peter or anyone else, the 2012 ultimate animation built the Harry becoming Venom because of his father and it makes sense since his father always abused him but in this Insomniac universe they have a minimally healthy relationship. And without that hate focus you transform one of Spider-Man's most personal villains into a generic megalomaniac seeking world domination.

Like you said it felt like they buffed Miles a little TOO much, the entire 3rd act felt rushed, things like NG+ weren’t in the game at launch, and some suits from the other 2 games aren’t even here. This fandom takes what I critique and either says my criticisms are meaningless or make it the worst game of all time, like there’s no middle ground. I really feel like it's the exclusivity and gamers nowadays in general. At least the ones you find online (God Twitter is so awful now) are getting increasingly tribal and toxic. The comments on any given game trailer is getting ridiculous (I swear if I see "DEI, skip" one more time) and more than ever before people are acting so entitled with games and beyond that like obsessed to creepy levels (like ya'll these aren't your children believe it or not). Anything with the word "exclusive" attached to it, is either the best thing since sliced bread or hot garbage (and you can usually guess whose on what said) and sparks way too much discourse online. It's like guys, these are video games. You know GAMES. Meant for our entertainment. Be critical of what you like and want to improve (which still means giving an intelligent thought and not just slinging incoherent insults). Don't engage with what you don't (which does a better job of telling corporations to stop pursuing them). It's not worth it otherwise. Also for God's sake people (in general not just gamers) need to stop attacking the person and not their opinion. I'm not going to sit here & act like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 didn't do anything right. That would be a lie. What would also be a lie is saying that Insomniac created a flawless masterpiece that didn't absolutely disappoint. The story has far too many flaws, disappointments & overall unnecessary scenes. The first Marvels Spider-Man game is really important to me. I played it when I was 9 or 10, can’t remember exactly. The game filled me with a lot of comfort but even back then there were still things I realised were not the best. The stealth could have been better, the civilian missions weren’t great, the Sinister Six should have had some more time to shine, Martin Li and Otto have the same motivations etc. The complete package was so good though that I didn’t really mind. I could look past the game’s shortcomings. Marvels Spider-Man Miles Morales had some more obvious problems that I figured out because I was older but I still had fun with that game and I think it overall improved on the gameplay. Marvels Spider-Man 2 showed up at a really weird point in my life. The game was good at first but then it got extremely glitchy. I got pissed off at it because my whole save game was automatically deleted because of a cube glitch and there were so many missing features that to this day are still being patched in. Every time a new patch happened a suit would become broken. The story was pretty underwhelming and in my opinion it just didn’t feel much like Spider-Man. It didn’t have heart and focused too much on political messaging. However the gameplay was amazing. I could pour hours into the harder and more engaging web swinging, the combat was a step down from the first two games but it was still really fun and the suits were really nice even though there was a worse selection. I did get my favourite Spider-Man suit though which is of course the classic black suit. The fandom around these games sucks in my opinion. If you criticise or praise an aspect of one of these games you get harassed and name called. The fandom act like immature babies. There are some pretty despicable people in the mix as well. (I think most people know what I’m talking about) and the fun just fades away for me. I don’t want to talk about these games. This channel feels like a safe space for me and I love how you are relaxed and rational about your criticisms. You’re not politically motivated. You don’t scream and cry because there are women and black people in the game but you aren’t afraid to point out how political messaging is rammed down your throat a lot of the time in Marvels Spider-Man 2. Anyways that’s all I got to say.

I think that the two extremes are the result of the fact the two main Spider-Man games are two entirely different products, 2 was such a huge departure from the original ps4 release, and changing the face models of peter and mj didn't help that fact, I think that everyone can agree that 1 is the superior product it did have its problems, the stupid puzzles, some weak story elements here and there etc. and those problems haven't went away in 2 on the contrary those problems got turned up to eleven, I can see how insomniac inconsistency created the two extremes, as for me I don't feel one way or the other about it.

my take on insomniac's spider-man: the symbiote was indeed rushed but I kinda understand why they did it, just like a movie, in a game you cannot take your sweet time on story beats you must move forward, but they still could've done better, never got into Harry becomes venom to be honest, as you mentioned it felt insomniac only did it to be "unique", never cared about MJ's career if I'm being honest, being brutally honest she was originally created to be eye candy, so IMO that makes her a white canvas for her to be whatever the writter wants her to be, yes I know that super model MJ does have her personality and she's not just eye candy anymore just pointing out the initial character wasn't the deepest character ever, I love Miles spider-man, IMO the only good character to ever came out of forced inclusion (let's be honest it's what happened) wave of characters like kamala khan, Jane foster's thor, iron heart etc., spider-man 2 in general does feel like a downgrade of the 2 games that preceded them but not by that much if I had to put a number on it I'd say the others are a 98 and this one was a 86. lastly Spider-man 2 has not one, not two but three best spidey moments I've seen in media in a long time, the first is the mission "missing grandpa" I could honestly count the marvel heroes that would not only sit on a bench with the person they were looking for but also have a nice chat with them with just one hand and spidey is deffinitely one of them great portrayal of the character, the second is Howard's pigeons, starting since the first game this is a side mission I've always thought was as spider-man as it can get, helping an old homeless person finding the last thing that reminded him of his late wife then finding a new home for them when (unknowingly to spider-man) he passed away? I honestly don't think any other hero other than spider-man would do that, the last mission was the JJJ's flashback mission, in encapsulates JJJ's character perfectly, which I feel like the MCU dropped the ball on him by making him an Alex Jones clone, JJJ actually has journalistic integrity and is a good man at it's core, in the comics he helped Peter after he knew what happened to his uncle and this mission follows this tread not only accepting Peter's photos but actually giving him a boost in confidance, god I love that mission so much.

@@Fthe90s My issue with that stance is that nobody seemed to have it with any other Spider-person (other than Ock, because Peter was straight up "dead") which makes many of the criticisms seem like they're not being genuine. That is, unless the people just never read Spider-Man comics. I always wonder where this stuff was with Ben Reilly, for example. People hated the clone saga, but most were fine with him being the main Spidey for a long time. That's where I think these critiques come off very disingenuous to some people. I think there's versions of Miles that are more interesting than others, but I'm not a fan of the approach of "He has all Peter's powers plus some," that some media goes for. I think there's a solid middle ground where he can have some of the same powers and some of his own.

@@DegenerateJay Ok fair enough, let's explore that. For the white copycats, when the fans express their dislike, nobody is going to swoop in and accuse anyone of racism/bigotry. The fan simply says, "This sucks, I want the real Spidey", and leaves. Or sometimes they just stop reading and/or watching without saying anything at all. Compare this to Miles, someone says anything against him and immediately gets accused of racism. This fuels a back and forth creating a feedback loop of insults and hate instead of the fan just leaving like in the case of the white copycat. I think hacky writers have figured this out which is why anytime you see a new version of any character nowadays, they make sure to change the ethnicity or something else. This ensures that if someone does bash the character, a bunch of people who just happen to share the same identity will swoop in and defend it cos of said identity. Boom, you've got yourself an artificial fanbase that otherwise wouldn't exist.

I think the second game has a lot of issues in a lot of different areas. Main one is how rushed it is; I can still recognise it’s a solid game. I prefer the 2018 game over the rest but I still enjoy all of them quite a bit. Why someone else can’t feel this way is odd. You don’t have to hate or love it, you can be in the middle. I also think there are many books and movies that have a lot wrong with them. A good example being Spider-Man 3; it’s a fun movie that I’ll watch for the rest of my life but it’s not perfect and that’s totally fine.

The game did try to hammer home that Miles is above Peter by the end. Its strange how Peter fully understands the pressures of being a solo spider-man for NYC is but then lets Miles do it alone because he pretty much views it as something Miles can do where he couldn't. I do really hate the ending of Peter taking a break though. It just rubs me the wrong way to imagine Peter not being spider-man during an emergency where he could be helping. Your point on the symbiote arc always being rushed it completely true. My favorite way of it being done was in Spectacular Spider-Man to this day. It wasn't too fast and Eddie's fall from grace was built up from the beginning of the show so they didnt need to rush anything for him at the end. Spider-Man 2 really felt like it rushed through the arc because they wanted to get to Venom as soon as possible. Peter's change was pretty quick and you didnt get much about how it affected his real life outside of maybe the blow up scene with Harry. I don't think it was handled super well but you will get the wrath of angry nerd god cast at you for saying this. I have also said this for movies that black suit peter should be a movie story itself and lead into a sequel that brings in venom. Imagine this game having ended with Harry becoming venom instead with a post credit scene of Norman taking the goblin serum.

I haven't played the second Spiderman game yet. I read the Spidey comics back in the early 80's and I thought the Black Suit saga was pretty well written. It did build up to the point that the alien black suit was getting more menacing with each new comic to the point it was revealed to be a living symbiote. I do wished that the writers back then would answer those questions if the symbiote really intended to permantly bond with Spidey. Personally I suspect it did not had that intention but was hurt of being rejected and tried to again forcefully bond again with Spidey but not permantly. The pla et of the Symbiote's saga also revealed that the Venom Symbiote did not had any intention to take over its host permantly and wanted to co exist with its host for survival. Aside from that even though Venom is one of my favorite Spidey villains... I would have loved to see a story similar to the Spiderman 90s animated show in the og Raimy movies.

Look I love the games to death, they’re so fun and the story I love a lot but calling someone a narcissist just because they don’t agree with your opinion is ridiculous. I like the first game, never gonna buy or play the second though. I've been "reading" the comics since 1978, when I was 6 years old and could not read yet, but just loved the pictures,.. The first game stayed true to the original (and in my opinion), the only Spider man, (PP).

I would say it's not the worst, most of fandoms are as toxic as this nowdays, I just don't care about twitter and reddit anymore, I just play what I enjoy, what gives me fun time and I won't let someone destroy my fun time by yelling "woke" etc I understand not liking it or something just be a decent person, don't be toxic. Tbh yes symbiote saga is rushed in most new spider man media now. But yeah most fandoms are really toxic now, if someone ever plays tlou 1 and 2 I suggest ignoring their fandom just have your opinion, because it's just to toxic. Both "woke" and "anti-woke" sides are toxic and stupid. That's some of my thoughts about it.

I think there are some people who feel the need to defend it because of the mass amount of hate that the game has gotten recently. I'll be the first to say that the game has its flaws, but at the end of the day I still think it was a solid entry in the Insomniac Spider-Man trilogy and the amount of people who shit on this game is kinda insane 😂

If insomniac really wanted to be different then in this continuity Spider-Man’s main love interest should have been someone else. MJ could still be in the game as Peter’s friend as a side character or something, have Black Cat or go really out there and different any day Scarlet Witch and boom there’s your Wolverine tie in or something. I enjoy Spider-Man 2 but the story just wasn’t as good as the first and the gameplay could have been better. I didn’t like that they got rid of the weapon wheel or replace all of the gadgets from the first game, web swing is overshadowed by web wings because they did really add anything new to it and web wings are faster. I kinda feel Spider-Man 2 was just set for a Venom game and Spiderman 3 if I’m being honest among other games

First of all, Spyro 2. The gameplay in Spider-Man 2 is incredible when you actually just do Spider-Man things. It looks beautiful and the music is great. The story however, and a lot of the side quests are unbelievably boring at best, and totally unbearable at worst. "Electric Spiderrrrrr" and MJs face looking directly into the camera saying The New Normal" had me throwing my controller.

Insomniac has done a lot of damage to the Spider-Man IP. I just want a Spider-Man adaptation where: 1. Peter Parker is the only spider-character. 2. He's voiced by someone that sounds similar to either Rino Romano, Chris Daniel Barnes, or Niel Patrick Harris instead of the nasally BS from Yuri Lowenthal. 3. MJ has her classic comic book look and has mannerisms similar to Spectacular Spider-Man (2008), or the '90s animated series. Is this too much to ask?

I do believe this game is the WORST Spider-Man adaptation...or at least top 3. It fundamentally fails ALL its characters, misinterprets and contradicts its own main plot line... The Symbiote story and Spiderman No More should NOT be MIXED together unless its Peter's horrible actions responsible for him giving up the mask. That angle CAN work BUT it contrdicts the lesson of Peter learning that he's a BETTER MAN withOUT the symbiote. And then giving him a Symbiote at the end of the arc in the form of Anti Venom spits on the face on the point of the WHOLE ARC 5:48 Ultimate Spiderman Cartoon already did that with MJ...and it was waaay better. Same with Harry Venom. The HYPOCRISY of people who DOGGED on Ultimate Spiderman for all its changed yet PRAISE Insomniac is insanity But even besides all that I dont hate Insomniac themselves or the people who like it. Just DONT GASLIGHT me into thinking this is a WELL written game😭💀. I'm seriously thinking about whether I should buy this game at all. Maybe for the Gameplay But as of right now I have NO faith in the third game. I hope its grea but even then its not gonna remove the stain on its legacy with 2. This game didn't even have a honeymoon stage for me the previews set my expectations and my excitement went out of the window as well as certain content creators starting fights because their favorite game was "attacked". Maybe that's why the game awards were so satisfying. Watching these idiots throw hissy fits over a game that did nothing other Spiderman games haven't done was gold.
