One tip I picked up - if you're taping off an area to be a finer design, then you should start with the color that's under the tape and paint a strip along the edge of the tape. By doing so, you'll fill in any tiny leaks that are under the tape with new paint which will match the color underneath. When you come back over with the appropriate color, it won't be able to leak under the tape because those leaks have been filled by the color you wanted there anyways.

Nice video and greetings from Germany! I'm a beginner and I would like to just coat my shoes with finisher (Air Max Deluxe SE white, black and Dunks Low summit white). I thought of using a deglazer/preparer and then applying a 4-coat matte. But I'm faced with the problem of whether I should paint the sides of the soles that are visible. If yes, will the paint stick? Probably not. So, I have to add the adhesion promoter into the mixture of the 4-coat, but is it okay if I also spray this mixture onto the leather parts? Even if I were to do the leather part only with 4-coat and the visible sides of the soles or harder plastic part with 4-coat mixed with adhesion promoter, would there be an edge where both applications meet each other and flake off? Considering that these two applications happen sequentially and not simultaneously, would this cause any issues? Also, what temperature (and maybe air setting) do you use for the heat gun?
@nubetre Жыл бұрын
Great stuff as always, I hadn’t thought to put the deglazer on the abrasive pads too and not just the applicator pads. The pre-creasing is an interesting approach too, some forces I made my kid cracked a bit at the high crease points but I sanded and touched up those spots and it’s held up ok so I sort of got there in a roundabout way

Hello, To start, fantastic walkthrough on the materials you'll need and the steps to take to not only make a custom shoe design, but also to keep the design looking factory fresh! I have just purchased a pair of Black AF1s and want to do a custom design. I want to ask, so I do what I'm thinking correctly. You say to use different sandpaper grit for where you intend to paint. If you're doing a splattered type design, would you advice sanding the entire paint surface, doing the splattering, and then hit the whole area with finisher for that factory fresh look? Or would it be better to design a splatter template, and then mask and sand where you'll be using the leather paint? Also, you mention during your Swoosh painting portion that you want to apply a light grey to make the color you really want to stick better. Would this be the same for a pair of black shoes if you're trying to apply a brighter color (or even white)? For example, with the black AF1s I mention above, what would be a good color to apply before painting on top of that color for what you're looking for? (ie. You used light grey first, and then applied your actual desired light blue color). You guidance would be very much appreciated and you're design came out flawlessly it seems. Just trying to learn thr best I can. I appreciate any guidance I can get. Thank you!! 😊

It’s hard to say you “have to.” I think this is a technique I would say falls under the category of when you want to do everything possible to prevent the worst case scenario. You dye white leather any color. So if the toebox needed to be painted red on your design you could dye it red first

I’m painting a pair of bred 1s and I saw that after applying two light coats of it you recommend painting immediately. To use it properly, should I section off the black panels with tape, apply the adhesion promoter to the red areas, paint the red entirely, then repeat those steps for when I get to the black? Or is it okay to apply the promoter over the whole shoe and paint it normally?

Great question. In order for it to be most effective you would want to take those extra steps of essentially applying it twice. The Quality of Forces for example just for a pair of all whites were of better quality than today's "premium" releases. Shouldn't you use the deglazer first and then sand it? Aren't you just sanding the topcoat which the deglazer already removes?
@DeJesusCustomFootwear8 ай бұрын
Sanding wise you’re trying to rough up the leather a bit since they’re not using the highest quality materials. Sanding will remove some of that topcoat as well. I haven’t tested various orders to see if it makes a difference as this has worked for me at least

@DeJesusCustomFootwear Жыл бұрын
I think I get what youre going for but no you would want to try and find a dye color that matches what the final paint color will be. if you're doing a red toe you'd use red dye and etc.

Why do you deglaze the leather after you sand it? Isnt the factory varnish on the surface of the leather? So when sanding it you essentially sand off the varnish, leaving deglazing the leather futile. Wouldn’t it be better to deglaze the leather and then sand the leather?? Thanks just curious

This is super helpful, great video! Question: When do you opt for dyeing a part vs painting it? Or both like in the video.
@DeJesusCustomFootwear Жыл бұрын
If you can dye it first that’s ideal.. for the slim chance the paint cracks you can still have the new dyed color underneath.. however you wouldn’t be able to dye black leather. So in this shoe I dyed all the parts with white leather since they were going to be painted black
@leofyregard3321 Жыл бұрын
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear Thank you for your reply! So, if you wanted to paint a panel (assuming white base), lets say a custom blue, you'd try to dye the panel as close to that blue as possible? I heard you can mix angelus dyes so I am wondering if you mix both the dye and the paint to match?
@DeJesusCustomFootwear Жыл бұрын
@@leofyregard3321 yes exactly! And even if you can only kind of get close it’s better than nothing.. let’s just say for example you were painting the clear jade color I did on the swoosh of this pair as your color for the toebox… some type of light blue or light green would do better for you than just white
