Following on from Sunday's "Tiger Engine Service", here is the rest of the peripheral work on the bike, mainly focussing on the brakes, "it don't get no more important than this folks"..!

Great round-up to your Sunday post Del. It's thanks to you that I regularly clean and inspect my brake system. Unfortunately last time I checked the rear caliper the blanking grub screw was seized solid - so I can't get into remove the pin. It's Plusgas hell for me in an on-going attempt to get the thing out - I have the replacement all ready to go but have to get the old one out first. Yuk (now I wonder what idiot over tightened it the last time it was inspected :-()

Great Vid once again Del..Should save the folks out there a small fortune. Just one thought though as I've spent a lifetime fixing aircraft we had tables that reduced the torque setting by up to 55% depending on the lubrication type. This is due to the fact it takes the metal to metal friction away which is part of the calculation. It has caused a few friends to strip metal bolts going into aluminium especially smaller ones. In fact I've just Heli-coiled a front fork leg for that very reason.

Hi Gary....thats a hugely misunderstood subject aye...lubing a thread will always reduce the torque value, after all the years i tend to usually do things up by hand and feel, i hardly ever go with the torque value as like you say, you can set the wrench bang on, and promptly strip the thread out..you kinda know what a bolt is tight enough by feel aye..?

Very true Del..it's the sort of thing that comes from years of experience handling tools. You really do just know when it's right. But as you said in your vid until you can tell use a torque wrench. The information is out there. It was my first port of call for the bolts on my Road King. I use anti seize compound a lot on that as it stop them seizing without really altering the torque setting. Did my pins in the black n decker lathe vice of doom spinny thing machine a la DBG so much quicker since seeing it now many times..great tip mate..used to spend ages with the pin in the vice and me spinning round like grommet with some emery cloth..

On mine there was a small metal clip that went on the top of the caliper,where the pads slot in, opposite end to the anti squeal spring, I know this because I found it in the bottom of my bucket when I cleaned mine lol

Del. Great vid! You and Pen don't stop - you're a machine! Anyway, I came here because I went to replace my rear pads last weekend. They seized up a couple times on me, probably due to inadvertently riding them as I went through the hellacious lower level of the GWB. Anyway, one of the Allen head bolts holding in the caliper is rounded (I suspect from the dealer checkup). What is your recommendation for removing it? Rudy

Great video del, pads on the back are scary tho XD I just wanna throw this out there for other new riders. I'm a mechanic n was working a long shift, at home time I got onto the bike, took a dizzy spell (low blood sugar) and she fell over. No major damage was done but just bare in mind that this could happen anytime, I'm off work 2 days now because I hurt my back trying to hold her up but I'll live. I hope this never happens to u but just be aware. Ride safe every1

Very instructive video ! Unfortunately, on my Tiger I went too far ... metal-on-metal : the rear brake disc is showing iron deposits (like narrow little strips) on the outward side... I cannot get them scraped off using an old iron saw blade... So I guess I will need to take the rear brake disc off. The only thing is : the Haynes manual is not mentioning the Tiger's rear disc removal procedure nor images. I noticed however your rear disc is the same type as mine, having 5 blind bolts attaching the disc directly to the wheel hub. Any advice would be welcome !

Hi Paulas, have you tried taking a small screw driver and flipping the caps off the disc bolts..? mine were just covered to keep the crap out, regular alun bolts underneath mate..!

+zzzpip Hi buddy, the wrench is a Sykes Pickavant, 3/8 drive, from 12 to 55 ftlb ... and i run a loose chain on my Tiger, at least 50/55mm so its never tight, any bike with longer travel suspension needs more slack.. hope that helps you out... good luck.. Del.

Hi Paul, due to the salty and corrosive environment that caliper bolts live in, plus the natural interaction between steel and aluminium, which causes a seizing corrosion to develop through chemical reaction, specially when assisted by salt water, it's important to put copper slip between the thread to stop it seizing up... they won't come un-done, provided they are torqued to the correct value!

I have a question> is it ok to use the copper grease on the slider pins because all the other videos i have seen about this topic uses a silicone based grease for this application. shane man Hi Shane....i don't put anything on the slide pins.. i always install them BONE DRY, and polished to a mirror finish in a drill.....if you smear any form of grease on them makes the brake dust stick to them and gum them up...leave them dry and wash your calipers out reglarly...what ever others may say, thats what I do, and it works for me using the logic i said here.... hope that helps mate.. good luck with it.. Thanks for another great video. I've got the same nissin two pot calibers on my Bandit 600. But the left side pistons keep jamming up. I've did the full service on them, cleaned the pistons and changed the dust and pressure seals. And still they are so thight that I can't push the pistons back with my fingers. Any advice? Hi Casper....have you lubed the pistons when you put them back in...and did you put the pistons back into the holes they came from...sometimes they can be come distorted and if you swap them about they jam in the new holes....also did you have to wrestle them out with grips...if so, you may have distorted one..!!! just a few ideas..

Hi there, for cleaning brakes you can buy a product that is actually called 'Brake Cleaner'... that is it's name! It sprays on and then dries off leaving no oil behind.... also, for lubricating the bolts, use 'Copperslip' ...hope that helps, Del

It sounds like you have air in the system, brake bleeding can be tricky, so keep trying and you'll get there buddy.

so if mine has both the floating caliper and the floating disc thats a good thing? im guessing but the disc doesn't have much room in the movement so im guessing thats maybe why the caliper has abit more to help it

No, you won't have both mate, if you have a floating mount on your caliper, then it will, at best, be a semi floating disc and won't move much at all...

No buddy, never use regular grease on brakes, always heat proof anti-seize, or copperslip !

Yes you could, it would work really well, just the same caution applies not to overheat the bolts and weaken them, otherwise go ahead.

How do I stop my front brakes from squealing, is light sand paper on the discs and pads ok to use instead of changing them ?

Hi Chunky, no sandpaper needed mate, drop the pads out and once you've cleaned the pistons and caliper like this, spread a smear of copperslip on the back of each brake pad, no thicker than butter on toast, and then pop them back in... the grease will absorb the high frequency vibration that leads to a squeal... and should stop it!

Strong solid dependable good advice. What else from DBG! I was doing some 'research on TriumphRat last night and came across a huge thread on AI and O2 sensor removal on the latest Bonnie range (2014/15) and even found a member quoting your good self, and the intimation was that you've re-installed the AI in the Scram. Is that right? I'd rather hear from the horses mouth so to speak :-)

Hi Peter, yes, indeed, that is correct! The AI removal is one step in a raft of mods to free up your engine of all the modern garbage and make it a little bit more straight forward 'meat & two veg'... the full list would be: AI removal, O2 sensor removal, airbox removal & pod filters and then suitable re-map... but the video I made was of removal of O2 sensors, as it was one job that many people struggle with...(the sensor tubes are easy to plug up, it's dealing with the pump and plug under the tank that is a mystery to some), if you're not gonna do at least O2 sensor removal and a re-map, then you risk the Lambda sensors reading the left over hydro-carbons and fuel residue that the AI tubes burn off and they thus read the motor as running rich, and will then lean out the mix accordingly... the O2 sensors only have such an effect at low speed or idle, but this can be harmful in traffic when everything starts getting hot and they start leaning everything out, as obviously, you'll start burning pistons and valves... so unless you're gonna do all of it (which I'm not at the moment), then it's best to do none of it, which is why I put them back in after the video... Sorry for the long winded reply, Peter, but hope that clears it up! Ride safe, buddy...

If you have the same Tiger as me... you should have a plug in socket on the left side just under the edge of the tank?....you can buy adaptors for it for just about anything..and as long as the bike is running when you use them they wont drain the battery... hope that helps.. Del.

+the1divrence The best way to shift a sticky piston, is to strip, clean and rebuild the whole caliper.. we have a few videos on this..! the dirt builds up too much and you have to deal with it properly, cleaning is only maintenance, not remedy..! good luck with it buddy.

I noticed you did not put any copper slip on the rear or contact points of the pads (not the face) , I was always told to. Any reason why?

I do this on new pads, stops the squealing you sometimes get.

Pad squeal is more prevelant on fixed calipers, as they are rigidly mounted to the frame and the high frequency vibration caused by braking is increased as there is no movement in the caliper to absorb that vibration, and this leads to a squeal.. .and although they are a lower performance design, sliding calipers on isolated mounts, such as these, tend to squeal far less, if at all, and I've never had them squeal since I've had the bike, so I've no need to put copper grease on the back of them... if they do, in the future, then I'll drop them out and pop some on!

I have a question I have a 2002 triumph daytona 955i started fine I washed it and now I have nothing from the start button I've checked all fuses, the starter siloniod, made sure i had power to the starter all that is okay I'm wondering if I could have a bad ground? Also check the clutch switch and it's functioning properly.. Any suggestions

Side stand switch maybe..? if you have a bad ground from the battery, then you wouldnt have been able to check the other items for live supply..! are you getting ignition lights and just nothing when you prod the starter...or no lights at all..?

+Moonfleet41 the kick stand switch has been unplugged(when it would crank) so I voted that out as an issue I'm thinking a bad ground somewhere because I've checked all power and relays and all seemed to check fine! We got so impatient and mad that we couldn't figure it out so we did some bypassing and a ground completed the circuit but I don't wanna leave it like that lol! Thanks for your help! 😇

I know it's an old video mate, but have you ever had problems with aftermarket seals? I rebuilt a caliper and fluid is pouring from a front caliper piston when I apply the back brake. Thinking of just buying a new piston and seals. Frustrating as you like.

Hi Chris, no, never had any problems, i buy good quality seals if i can, or from the dealer direct if not.. they are so cheap that you dont save much buying cheap ones....!

Found the problem. Like a knob head, I put a 25mm piston in to a 27mm bore. Hence the leak. And organic pads. Crap. Other than that, I'm looking forward to getting home in a couple of months and doing a fork rebuild 👍. Thanks again for all the work you've put in.

hi del i know this is a triumph video but i have a harley ,i didint start it for a few months and i went to start it pulled clutch in wouldint turn over fully charged battery turned off then tryed agian started

Hi Delboy. New student for your school of mechanics. Have you got a film on replacing the brake discs? I bought a 2003 Tiger project bike recently. Can you recommend a supplier or two? Many thanks for the great teaching.

Good evening Fred, i have replaced many discs in projects over the years, all the videos are listed in the various play lists, and replacing the disc on any wheels is pretty much the same on any bike. As for a supplier, try 'Wemoto.com' they can supply discs for just about any bike, and should certainly be able to get a range of choices for yours. +Bozskylumir If you are asking about a Tiger 955i, my friend, I would buy at least a litre , especially if you are changing from another fluid... it's important to wash through the old fluid with lots of new fluid to make sure all the old fluid is washed away... hope that helps !

Have you ever done a full engine strip down and rebuild? I have not had time to visit all your videos so I don't know. If not, is it on the cards? I ask because I learned more by doing one myself than reading hundreds of books and manuals, but I could have also learned by watching it done on film. As we know the good old internal combustion engine is virtually the same beast so far as petrol engines are concerned and work in the same way. Refinements aside, an engine is an engine. A clutch is a clutch. A piston is a piston and so on. I realise that if you have not done one before its huge ask but if you have, where can I find it?

Never gone that far with the videos mate, we have always stopped at the basics to keep the well intentioned and well meaning owner from saying "how hard can it be" and then getting themselves in a mess.... not being holy, but i wouldn't want to be responsible for the insuing expence and heartache when they have to take it to a garage to be put back together......also we dont have an engine to strip down anyway. , our bikes are fine and on the road...so thats the biggest drawback as with so many videos that are requested...

Sure thing mate, that was brake cleaner (what ever is to hand), clean oil, or even a handfull of clean grease from the grease gun will work to shift all the black muck off your hands... !

Is lithium soap based grease no good for the caliper sliding bolts/rods? I believe that's what the manual for my fz6 recommends, but you insist on the copper grease...

Hi mate, nothing in my video said that I 'insist' on copper grease, I simply suggested that as opposed to regular grease, as it doesn't melt, or sucumb to the rigors of heat, and nor does your recommended grease, so by all means go with that

Do you fear the brake cleaner drying your square seals out on those pistons?

devonblaine Hi mate, no not at all, 'brake cleaner' is obviously formulated to be safe for brakes and not perish rubber... it's not the drying element of spirits that damages rubber, it's the corrosive content of the liquid itself and brake cleaner is not corrosive to rubber...

del hi there maybe you can help got me a zr7 few little issues but nothing major was doing the brakes got three pistons out but the 4th is doing my nut any ideas for getting it out thanks iain

Hi Iain, I always suggest to pump the pistons out... evenly... until they are all showing the dust seals... but often, that doesn't always work! The best thing I can suggest is to try and heat the caliper body using a hairdryer, nothing too fierce, and try to rotate the piston in it's hole, and gently work it outwards.. you can use some WD40, as you will be cleaning them all up afterwards, other than that mate, and above all else, DON"T use any extreme force on that piston, as they are very easy to distort, then you won't get it back in it's hole without jamming - hope that helps !
