Not only that, but it's your job to research the area you'll be transiting and familiarize yourself ahead of time. Back in my trucking days, I always did my homework ahead, when beginning any trip. Especially if my trip would take me through an area I didn't already have experience with. I knew the frequency of rest stops, pullouts, truck stops, and other important resources and places to stop. I knew, in general, where most of them were. I knew what areas had long stretches where there was no where to safely stop, or no place to get fuel. I also usually had an idea of what the high and low end of fuel prices were in the area. This is really basic foundation shit. And, it's a helluva lot easier now than it was back then. You can easily research every bit of it and more on the web, and you can do it on a smartphone from pretty much anywhere. I mean, it's absolutely stupid simple and easier than eating ice cream. There's really, REALLY no excuse for not doing it. If you're that lazy, incompetent, and ignorant, you probably shouldn't be allowed to drive on public roads or operate any kind of remotely dangerous equipment.

Running out of fuel and breaking down are two different things entirely. First rule I was taught as a driver is never run out of fuel there is no excuse
@awdeveau4 ай бұрын
I ran out of fuel once when I was around 20 and fairly new to running out of state. I was on my way back home and was pretty tired so I pulled into the last rest area that was still about two hours away from home. Fuel gauge was reading around quarter of a tank but I parked on the side of lot as the parking slots were full. On the side it had just enough slant that the fuel had all run into one tank. Technically I still had fuel but apparently the pickup for the fuel was only in one of the tanks and it wasn't the tank that had the fuel. I'm not sure if it was an issue with that old truck or what the problem was. The tank on the side leaning towards the ditch looked almost half full while the other tank was empty. When I finally got to a fuel station the level in the tanks had evened out on level ground. Either way I've never parked like that since then unless I have at least half a tank.
@SPD_driver4 ай бұрын
I'll use the defective fuel guage excuse for the one time (2nd run 1st fuel tank of a rental) and a hooped cross feed between twin tanks on my regular truck just fresh back out of service..... both times I visually had lots.... sigh. The rental was a single tank, bone empty, guage still reading 1/3.... 2nd time, the draw tank was dry, pony tank had just under a 1/4, but it wasn't equalizing and I pooched on a hill, crossfeed at the wrong end.

I have "ran out of fuel" with a quarter tank in a semi while rolling down the road. I hit the construction zone bump and best we could figure it jostled the fuel enough to suck air into the entire system, 3 miles from the truck stop i was heading to. I'm 79 and retired (at 75). One of the jobs I had in my career was maintenance supervisor at a beneficiation plant (lots of piping, big pumps, big motors, etc.). I had 4 cranes under my supervision, all with certified operators; a 7T carryall (flat surfaced front and rear), an 18T (that could roll with a 12T load), a 65T truck crane (licensed for highway travel), and a 100T all terrain. It was a very large plant. We offloaded incoming shipments from time to time because the warehouse overhead crane was only rated at 20T, and had a limited area. In every lift, large or small or uncommon (too big for the warehouse), the responsibility for everyone involved was discussed before every lift. That driver would have been told by me or the crane operator, "Don't move until you're told to move." You expected the driver to know that already, but you didn't tell him explicitly. The drivers with whom we dealt were experienced pros, we expected them to know, but we still told them explicitly, "Don't move until you're told to move."

Or if there was money in it do a little bit of that. They put out the bids for the drive at bare bottom prices. Then when no one takes that job because they would lose money they increase it a little and wait...a little and wait. That's why your shipment came in 3 weeks late. Until finally some guy desperate enough to make the payment on his new truck takes it. Lots of guys like that that don't make enough to keep their business afloat and have to quit the industry. Meanwhile they screw up everything else for guys who actually know how to balance their business expenses.

What was he going to say IF he would have gotten pulled over.??? So many things wrong with what and how he did things. The moving before he checks to make sure he was cleared is just what you hit on. I've only been late for one load. EVER. That was because I did break down. I always planned for 20 gal more than I expected, from one fuel stop to the next. Old school. Perfect MVR. 22 years driving. Forget that clown. I've always hated working for people that were a little relaxed when it comes to safety standards. They exist for a reason. Good for you for putting him in his place for it. You had every right. The nerve of that guy. 1) He runs out of gas while operating a transport business (with an additional 30 gal tank) because he's a cheapskate and irresponsible. 2) The wear and tear (not to mention fuel) used when he lied about breaking down (and all you needed was a pickup to haul a few gallons of diesel... 3) He blames you for his problems and poor choices. 4) He doesn't follow simple directions. 5) He didn't double check his work and could have easily caused damage (thankfully you caught his mistakes) 6) He doesn't have any paperwork for the job??? (I still can't wrap my head around that) HOW??! I got this stuff. Oh look, here's a dude. I'll just leave it with him. I'm sure it's fine. Nahhh, he doesn't need to sign for anything. 7) He doesn't follow simple safety protocol. That dude is straight up dangerous to others and cargo. I'd never do business with him either. He reminds me of a situation. A buddy of mine owns a transport company. I was at his house when he was notified that his driver had intentionally left a tiny part of the order (2 pipes) at the pickup location 250 miles away. They weren't just there, he left them laid out in a mess. The lot's manager was cool about it, but not thrilled. Everything had been calculated in advance so that it would all fit. The driver didn't follow directions and loaded them wrong. When he noticed that the remaining two pipes didn't fit, he figured, "Oh well, I'll just get them later" and took off. I don't remember why he couldn't just turn around, but due to the incompetence of the driver, the situation was no longer a simple fix. My buddy was left with no choice but to put everything down, hop in his truck and haul a massive empty trailer to make the unnecessary additional 500 mile trip that night. All for two stupid pipes. Twice the expense for a simple job. Needless to say, when he put down the phone, he said that the driver was fired but didn't know it yet.

I got anxious while watching this. I have been in this situation. A half hour there only working yourself up to find out that is just someone unwilling to take responsibility for their own stupidity and not realizing how stupid they are. Then a half hour back to ruminate on that anger. Then the silent goal to have it hooked up before he was done so you can passive-aggressively wait in a subconscious attempt to be challenged. Then explode when properly cleared and assert my dominance to avoid anymore interaction. I have done this dozens of times. Never feels good. I commend you for posting.

Any keyboard warriors that can still say Casey was out of line after watching the video, just has never done any kind of rigging or loading/unloading. Setting aside how un-professional the guy was by running out of fuel, taking over an hour to simply call & notify you. Casey was completely in the right for “yelling” at the guy when he started to pull away before getting any kind of signal to do so. The tiny glimpse into how he operates made me nervous for anyone on the road when that guy is pulling a full load down the highway.

I don't watch your channel solely for the good-feels. You record life as a heavy wrecker operator and off-road recovery. Life happens and you capture it for us. Good, bad, indifferent, there it is. You handled this one a whole lot better than I would have. As I was watching you get rhe chains, I thought to myself "that driver is not going to have paperwork" sure enough.....technically that bed never got delivered, right? Wonder if those logs ever got delivered or that purchaser had to take him gas too.

Retired trucker here(25+ years, never ran out of fuel, ever, DIDN't LIKE some prices i had to pay, but NEVER ran out of fuel! ) ... Next time you get a load like this with an upset driver, no matter where the drop point is, tell the drive to "Drop the load right there" as he's fired, and pay the guy off for the services rendered... Hire another Truck to complete the load if its not possible to pull it yourself. I speak on this from expierence. Complainers are NOT the type of people you want representing your company(YEP, pulling your equipment is representative of your company). Complaining contractors/employee's need to be dealt with on the spot as not wanting to work for you.
@brandonbld172 ай бұрын
That is not how that works. It is not your decision as a customer waiting on a load whether or not you fire the guy deliverin your load that is the broker's job the broker decides who delivers your load however if you hire a company directly then you can fire the driver However you still have to pay them for bringing it as far as they did otherwise they do not have to allow you to get your freight unless they are paid. I have a lot of things direct a customer and if they decide to fire me they still have to pay me before I drop their load at the location at the location they decided they didn't want my services anymore otherwise I keep their car and there's nothing they can do about it until they pay for services

As both a business owner and someone who has made mistakes on a job, I would say you are 1000% justified, I'm still pretty young but I've always had a good head on my shoulders, and for all we know this driver wasn't the owner which means some blame can be set aside for whomever hired him, however there should have been a huge apology and at definitely a thank you in order, even if it was him giving you $20 for the gas and $30 for your expenses, that would've still been frustrating for you however the sting would be a lot lighter knowing they admitted a mistake was made that affected your day. You did good for sure handling this and while I don't know the conversation at the gate, I can assume that in the heat of the frustration you may not have clarified any directions for unloading practices and as someone who personally hasn't dealt with unloading anything via a crane, and would check first for further instruction from the person doing the operating, I can see where he may have glanced at the shipment being raised, confirmed in the mirrors and then figured it was best to get out of your way. Still very justified to yell at them to stop and educate them but that is potentially the only moment where you may have been a bit over the edge with aggression... which a solid 99% of people would be. Sometimes its hard to take a step back until the situation is fully over which is what you did by venting and eventually getting ice cream, which I'm sure your next customer will appreciate.

My wife did the same thing as him coming back from seeing her family way up north. Drove past at least a half a dozen gas stations with the low fuel light on. Called me to rescue her, which I was willing to do, but I was working 2.5 hours away on a job I couldn't leave. She didn't want to call a tow truck to bring gas so she sat on the side of the highway for 4 or 5 hours till I got there. She was still 80kms from the house, I'll never understand that one. There is possibly an obvious reason why that person works through a broker. As a former professional driver, running out of fuel, except in a case of mechanical failure is inexcusable. you know how far you have to travel, you know hoow greedy or otherwise your truck is. You would also know about fuel availability, espically when you have previously lived in the area you are going to travel in. If ever there is a "next time" similar to this you have a less frustrating solution. Hook up your ex army trailer to the wrecker, go out to wherever the delivery driver is stuck, collect your goods and leave them at the side of the road. As far as the tale told to the broker goes, video evidence speaks volumes.
