FYI, Dell hasn't addressed the trackpad issue AT ALL. Their new XPS line up (15 and 17) still have that issue, a simple search on Reddit/KZbin will prove that. It's the fact Dell sends to reviewers perfectly working machines because they get tested more, unlike what the regular customer will receive. Not saying every laptop will have that issue, but beware.

I'll give my review. The XPS 17 appears to be a great machine but Dell has serious quality control Engineering issues and it's very common for owners to get motherboards replaced with refurbished ones only weeks or a few months after purchase. There service division gives people the run around first changing heat sinks and cheap parts before opting to change out the board only to have the issues persist. People are spending 3000 4000 dollars on the higher end models of it to basically get a computer Dell refuses to replace or properly fix and which has made it unusable for many people for months. If you have an issue more then 30 days after Purchase you are stuck with what ever service requests and fixes they arbitrarily decide to pursue all the while spending hours and hours dealing with them service tecks and not having use of the machine. These are not isolated incidents be careful about some of the KZbin reviews many are just sponsored commercials.

I still received two devices with faulty trackpads months after their "patch". They later sent someone to repair the device, that did the job. You should be prepared for faulty trackpads, if you choose to buy this device. But it's definitely worth it in my opinion, it's an amazing device.

Nice honest review. Great job and certainly one of the best reviews I've seen. I'll be watching more. I have the XPS 17 and it does a great job for everything that I need it to do. I really wanted to wait for the 10nm 11th generation version because I felt like it would bring better battery life and might run a little cooler.. I personally am happy with the power of the 10th gen when editing photos but it can definitely drain the battery if you stay unplugged. But on the positive side, the battery is considerably better than my 3 year old XPS 15 - 9560. Much, much better.

The second one had a damaged hinge on the screen brand new from the factory. The tech support was phenomenal. But the quality control from the factory was the worst I've ever seen using computers since 1983. If the quality control was good the machine actually worked very nicely! If gaming performance isn’t key, the super light 17” LG Gram has a beautiful and bright 16:10 screen 2560x1600 that I run at native 100% scaling. The 2020 i7 1065G7 version I have I’ve pimped up to 40GB RAM and put in a 2TB NVME SSD, but best of all it has three USB A and one TB3. The 2021 has 2 USB A, and two TB4, but I don’t think the 2021 has upgradable RAM. For development the screen running at its native resolution is just beautiful. No discrete GPU, but iGPU QuickSync video encoding is surprisingly good. Only downside in my use cases is its audio. I also have an i7-1065G7 XPS 13 2-in-1 late 2019 fully loaded to 32GB RAM & 4k screen which is better for train commuting, but on a desk the 17” is so much better for development due to the screen real estate. The push by manufacturers to discard USB A and force us to dongle life has been very premature IMHO.

I have an older model, back then everyone was hyping the xps series. Turned out they suffered head problems. Either it was software and Bios side or the head piper were bend. Still no reviewer is talking about daily use during workload. You had to undervolt the old models and change to an older Bios cause Dell just could get their shit together. A colleague at work had a technician send to change his heat pipes and fans twice and it didn't get better until I fixed it it for him with undervolting. Don't get me wrong though, everything else about it is marvelous and i love using it but of i pay 2k for a fucking laptop it should work out of the box and not keep me from working.

With enormous keyboard space, I don’t understand why Dell still make these tiny arrow keys, and share Home/End keys with function keys. These keys are vital in coding and document editing, but Dell’s keyboard design obviously makes typing a bit more difficult. Guess I’d have to wait till the next gen if they come up with a more functional keyboard

@FrancescoDeRosaTheOne
@FrancescoDeRosaTheOne 2 жыл бұрын
@Juri V The display is stil incredible. But the PC itself it's not. I should have waited for the M1 Macs. First of all, it's really HOT. The cooling barely manages to keep temps under 100°C in "heavy" use like video exporting. It's a Creator laptop, if it's problematic to export videos, what is its point? Sometimes it just shut itself off due to extreme temperatures! The build quality is poor, compared to other 3000 €+ premium laptops. The integrated Intel GPU can't properly drive the 4K HDR display, resulting in a sluggish Windows interface (you have to disable it and use only the dedicated GPU). The integrated audio is terrible, worse than any premium smartphone. Forget using it on battery. I have the 2020 model, the first one, and I hope that the 2021-2022 revisions fixed all these problems

I would personally prefer the entire industry to move from a 16:9 to a 3:2 instead of a 16:10 (8:5) display like on the Microsoft Surface products. Such an amazing asepct ratio to work with for most applications!
@CheapBastard1988
@CheapBastard1988 3 жыл бұрын
I understand what you mean but I think 16:10 is a better compromise. Of course a compromise isn't good at anything but reasonable for everything. 3:2 is great when you only use your laptop for work and definitely superior to 16:10 but not so great when playing games or watching videos which are often 21:9 and on KZbin are often close to ultrawide because many watch on their phone. Also many games start to act weird when not using a certain aspect ratio and 16:10 has been around for over a decade (my old 2008 HP Compaq 6820s for example has a 16:10 screen).

The problem with Dell Premier colour is that it actually ruins the displays ability to display gradients. I'm surprised you didn't notice this working on colour critical content. With HDR disabled even youtube videos display excessive amounts of banding on backgrounds that should be smooth gradients. Resetting colours via the intel colour management tool instantly fixes this so that gradients display smoothly again. But the second you adjust the colours again in Premier colour the gradients go haywire again.

So I have this laptop...and its been an odd experience as well. Now, I have had three service calls...with just oddities. With that said, its working now(knock on wood). The first oddity is that it charges "better/faster" if you plug the included charger into the USB-C on the left, front. Second, if you are gaming, you need two chargers. Third, the Dell and NVIDIA drivers work, but when it was first received it would shutdown the NVIDIA driver with no notice....which is fine for browsing the internet, but sucks for gaming. I think the current drivers have resolved that issue, but I still get weird artifacts. The two of the service calls were "wipe the drive and re-install"...and yes that worked, just sucked. The last service call was to address an issue with it not charging while using the 2060, which was addressed(finally) by replacing the charging brick. I now run with my external monitor(dell 27, usb-c) charging on the left-rear port and the the charging brick on the left-front port...no issues for the past 1.5months. Its been great otherwise...so yeah, maybe I just have a laptop on the spectrum.

While I generally understand the reluctance about USB-C/USB-A switch, once you go over to the USB-C (or more accurately Thunderbolt) lifestyle, you're gonna forget USB-A very fast. I started with my 14 inch Lenovo Yoga 2 years ago and today, with my Dell XPS 13 9310, I don't find any issues with it at all - 2 cables into the laptop both at home or in the office and I have charging, high speed networking, all the peripherals (mouse, keyboard, USB microphone, headphone amp/dac), several external SSDs and an ultrawide monitor connected through an eGPU. Try doing that with bunch of USB-A ports. On the go I maybe do stuff like tranfer files from my external SSD, but that one can have either connector via a cable. And if you find someone who really wants to stick an USB-C, you can always have a hub in your bag and you're good to go. Haven't missed USB-A at all.

You are the first reviewer I have heard complaints about the xps 17 speakers. I have had two and they are just about as good as the 16 inch macbook M1 speaskers which I have have now, Sorry, they are not "pretty good", they are VERY GOOD and you are right about being the best windows speakers. I don;t know about your headphone problems I have not noticed any problems with listening with headphones. Of more concern is the battery and heating problems, at least compared to my macbook pro M1. With battery are you talking about the 4k model, because again, neither mobile tech reveiw or dave2d reported anywhere near 11 hours, and with brightness turned down and light mix usage, I have never got more than 5 hours. I had the full HD model where I got about 7 or a litte more with light use. I check out your reviews every now and then but they all ways deviate a lot from some of my favorite reviewes which are dave2d and Mobile tech review and one or two others for some reason. I am not saying that your reviews are sub par because they are not, They are very good in a lot of respects

I got last year's XPS 17 as a client for work-related video conferencing and other work activities since I am required to keep work items on a separate computer from all home activities. I got it with the 1650 graphics since I wasn't expecting to do a lot of content creation on it. After getting it my employer went down the tubes and ended my contract early. But it was a solid workhorse for the business activities I was doing. The trackpad is OK, but I have a Microsoft mouse and dual monitors plugged into a Dell D3100 Dock that is connected to the laptop so actual trackpad use has been minimal for me during the pandemic. It's functioning as a mid-level desktop. . some reviews have been critical of the XPS 13 because it can require up to 180 watts on a full load for GPU and CPU and having a power brick that's only 130. Some reviewers are expecting a 180 or even a 200-watt power brick. This may also explain some of the battery and recharge choices that Dell has instituted.

The throttling is due to the fact that USB-PD only delivers 100W of power. Under full CPU+GPU load will draw over 120W. Dell uses the battery to supplement the power brick in order to make the brick smaller.

I had the XPS 17 and returned it twice, then moved on. Reason? The trackpad. If you have previously used the large trackpad on a MacBook pro, you will be very disappointed. Not because of the lack of gestures or features, but because the corners of the trackpad do not work as any reasonable person would expect. It causes issues constantly while doing basic things like dragging files. If you check Dell's website, they have an info page on how the trackpad "should" be used. The answer is to keep one finger on the corner of the trackpad while dragging your other finger around to avoid the dropouts. Who on earth uses a trackpad like that? If you're going to put a giant trackpad on a laptop, just make sure it actually works? I did pick up an Alienware M17 r4 with rtx3080 as a replacement. Besides the firmware they released which temporarily broke the laptop, the M17 has been great!

@PelletiKentaro
@PelletiKentaro 3 жыл бұрын
It is not a problem of the charger. The computer itself is bad designed. In order to cope with heavy loads of cpu+gpu, like gaming of 3D rendering, the laptop needs to use both the charger and the battery in order to provide the needed power. After few hours the laptop remains without battery and switches off. Dell is not changing the laptops or providing a proper solution. I have this laptop, and I cant use it as a laptop due to this issue. Dell really messed up with this model.

You are forgetting that 16:10 WAS the standard widescreen display ratio... until panel manufacturers jumped on the TV bandwagon all those years ago. I like the XPS 17's display, but the lack of a standard barrel plug for power and no USB A type ports is a very stupid omission, and frustrating for the end user. When dongles break your work get interrupted and your laptop becomes a brick - cannot have that when you need your laptop to be a proper work tool. That power issue and throttling you mention happens precisely because of USB type C power limits. You cannot really charge and do heavy workloads at the same time. The laptop will actually eat into it's battery even when plugged in to feed a CPU/GPU heavy load. Dell has a desktop docking station with DUAL USB type C cables that you can use to get around the problem, but it's far larger than the supplied AC brick. I hope to see them do 3000 series nVidia GPU's and 11th gen Intel in their refresh.

Great review, very useful! Thanks. Might you answer a question: Will the 17" FHD+ non-touch screen still have a decent quality picture if I go that route instead of the UHD+4k touch screen? I'm torn about which to get. I do use it mobile, but most of the time it's at my home office where I can plug it in except for the occasional time I decide to work or watch a movie elsewhere around the house. I am online long hours 5-7 days a week, but do no gaming and no video editing, just lots of streaming and web searching. It's now Dec 2021, I am looking at the XPS 17" 9710 with the 11th gen i7 chip, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD storage, the 3050 graphics and Windows 11. Just can't decide on which screen to get. The UHD+ is supposed to have some anti-reflective treatment to it, including something about blue light, but it's still gloss, while the FHD+ matte screen is supposed to be easier on eye strain and better battery life. The extra $150/$200 for the UHD+ doesn't matter to me, I just don't want a poor quality picture, and am especially concerned that at the larger 17" size the FHD+ will be noticeably poor. Care to take a shot at answering my question above and providing any further insight? Thanks either way. Thumbs up to your video review!

The 15 and 17, esp. the 17 with the bigger display, uses so much more power that I have HEARD, I cannot confirm, that the included power adapter cannot fully power the device. If the CPU and GPU are both under full load, the battery will drain even if it is plugged in. Hence Dell's throttling when below 50% battery. I don't own any of the new XPS laptops, cannot confirm the above, but that is a thing I heard on other techtuber's channels.
