Fuel mileage wins are weird. I get people giving her flack for it. But at the same time if you watched how she did it, she knew from the start of the stint she had to conserve. It's hard as a racing driver to convince yourself to get passed and stay driving slower than you know you can go. She did it and saved at the right time in the right places to where she could run faster at the end of the race than Castroneves and was able to save more than the rest of those on the same strategy. I give her credit for it. It wasn't everyone else's miscalculation giving her the win. It was her being one of the only ones willing to do what was necessary for the long haul to make it work.

Racing isn't all about being the fastest for the entire race, it's about thinking spatially and being able to comprehend and calculate the factors of the entire race with your team while you are in the car. There's nothing illegitimate about her win at all. She did what other drivers didn't think to do, and that allowed her to take the flag first. It doesn't matter how you got there, it's getting there that counts and she did.

I love that wide oval track in Japan. wish they had that kind of track on the West Coast. Danica made a mistake going to NASCAR. It is too bad she didn't get a 2nd win to really legitimatize her win. Someone six seconds off the pace on a road course IS, someone who rides last and far off the pace of the 2nd to last on an oval IS. A driver consistently running in the 16 to 25 range out of 40 is NOT. Is that clear enough for you?

ANYONE who would lay the claim that she only won because of fuel mileage must then accept that in her rookie year 2005 during the Indy 500 she was faster than anyone on track and at the restart late in the race had left the late Dan Wheldon behind like a bad habit but only lost the Indy 500 because she was low on fuel and had to move to the highest fuel saving mode on the engine. It was a GREAT day for Motorsport as a whole! Danica was a properly good Indycar driver, and was close to many more wins, she did have 7 podium in total, & especially her first three years at AGR was really strong. She was very strong at Indy, & was as everyone knows close to winning in 2005, probably 2007 was her best "shot" but due to bad weather, the race was cut short. Also her 3rd place in 2009 was very impressive! A shame that she went to Nascar for 2012. I would so like for another proper talented female to enter a top tier Racing series again, which they really is pushing into some good cars like DP was! Fun to see her still being involved in Racing, as a co commentator at Sky sports F1 & on the indy broadcasts :)

I have mixed feelings on this part. When CART went bankrupt in 2003, Tony George tried to buy the series, but the bankruptcy judge let Gerry Forsythe, Kevin Kalkhoven, and that trash human Paul Gentillozzi buy the series for less money to limp it on until reunification where if both parties didn't declare a truce, Champ Car was going to die.

I could never understand why Danica ever went to NASCAR when she was clearly a much better open-wheel driver. She could have had a very respectable racing career had she stayed in the discipline that suited her talents the best. Such a shame.

With the rain you may be thinking of Bubba Wallace - since his first win was largely cheered by the progressive crowd but it was basically a halted race due to rain and he was the leader at the time.

Racing is not always about going fast. Well I mean it is but strategy comes to play also and it takes a team to win a race and not just the driver. Gotta build competitive cars and have flawless pit crews, crew chief, spotters and one mistake by anyone is the difference between winning and losing. I remember her leading the Indy 500 with two laps to go and she ran out of gas. So how ever you look at it the entire team beat everyone else's entire team to win the race. She wasn't conserving fuel at the end of the race! she was racing. Everyone else made a mistake and lost the race.
