what doc you mean when you say distance during collision?

I liked this one. It was nice to see a discrepant finding and to be able to analyse the results to explain it. Might want to toss in the fact that bouncing increases change in momentum and impulse value (which sometimes increases the average force, but only if the time doesn't increase proportionately).

I am planning to have a whole video which discusses "bouncing increases change in momentum and impulse value" etc. Thanks for the input!

What is the thickness of that cloth diaper? If I would know the thickness, I could calculate the proportion for with and without helmet. Need this for modeling how different materials and their thickness reduce the force of impact. Or maybe you can suggest better ideas on how to calculate the time of impact without experimenting, Mr. P.?

great video, and really helpful for me to understand this specific area of mechanichs

Just want to ask a question if the forces presented on the video can be applicable to motorcycle helmets? or is it only for bike helmets? thanks
@FlippingPhysics5 жыл бұрын
This definitely applies to motorcycle helmets as well.

Great explanation, but if we calculate impulse based on the formula I= average F * t ,we get I = 618 * 0.015 = 9.27 N.s which is less than the area under the curve(9.84 N.s) , was there something wrong during converting the irregular area to the rectangular one ? What method do you use to find the average area ?

Thank you so much for the video I have a question maybe you could help me out. I am trying to measure the impact force of a ball made of iron falling over a helmet (free fall), I am able to measure the speed of the falling object but I have no idea how to measure the impact time(change in time) or the distance the helmet deforms. so If I am not able to measure the impact time I cannot know how large the force will be therefore how could I select a proper sensor. In order to select a force sensor I need both the max force and the impact time (so i can choose a proper sample rate). thank you again..!!!

Can you film the event with a phone that can do 240 frames per second?

Could the person who submitted the Italian translation of the closed captions of this video please let me know who you are? I would enjoy thanking you and giving you credit for your work. flippingphysics@gmail.com

what happens if the medicine ball is full of jello? The overall forces acting on the jello don't change until they hit the "ball skull" right? (I'm asking about jelloballs, but a friend of mine is thinking CTE)

wondering if the impulse is modified by the material used. that would be fun to test. Pacing was good, taught me something my teacher had not! Although the sheer amount of 70s man-hair was a bit distracting, in a funny way. I give it a thumbs up from a student perspective!

How do you calculate the average of the force?
@eaglekraft6874 ай бұрын
I think I get it. Since the impulse stays the same. If the change in time increases, then the force of impact would have to decrease to make sure it is equal to the impulse. And the change in time increases because the distance the medicine ball has to travel increases. Can someone confirm this is correct? The only thing I don't understand is why the distance would increase if you add a helmet. Wouldn't the distance decrease?
@FlippingPhysics4 ай бұрын
Correct. The distance the medicine ball moves during the collision increases with the addition of the helmet. Not to be confused with the distance the medicine ball moves before the collision.

since there was a change in momentum do we have to sadly say the physics did not work and if so can someone please explain why so the universe will make sense again.
@FlippingPhysics4 жыл бұрын
Momentum is conserved for the ball-Earth system because the net external force on that system is zero. Momentum is not conserved for just the ball because the net external force on the ball is not zero.
