Is failure something you handle well? Let me know in the comments below

You need to apply for residency? I'm from the US where I think most programs are 4 years which includes everything

Growing up I always was in the top class and always aced the exam so when I had failures for the first time when in dental school, tbh I really had a difficult time and felt so depressed that time. But as time passed by, I started to embrace and tell myself that we all learn from failure and failures are journey to success.

Vanessa Li so true! The higher we go up in education the more we are among people who are bright and top of the class. At a certain point I had to tell myself it’s okay. :)))

I hated in hygiene school when we were tested in clinic settings the instructor right in your face writing notes. Feeling the judgement. Lol I got through it!

I had the same problem when it was time to take those hand-on competency exams in dental school. I started to be nervous and my heart rate increased dramatically. I realized my heart rate was the problem because it made my hands trembled and I couldn't think clearly. Therefore, I had my PCP prescribed propranolol to help control my heart rate and that solved my problem.

Hi Dr. Joyce. Here's a tough one, I am at a crossroad in my life of choosing dental school (with 0 prereqs done yet) or just continuing with my BBA undergrad degree. So why dental school? Because I have always had this desire to provide care and I think dental is a good mix of the business side of things and the medical side of things. Help .... please?

Hi! I was just wondering if you are a dentist in one state, can you move to a different state and practice there?
@Joycethedentist5 жыл бұрын
Paige Jackson from what I know yes you can. The info I have might be a little outdated as I haven’t looked into it in quite awhile. You initially need to get licensed where you want to work and if you move before a certain amount of time has gone by, another exam may be needed. It’s by state. After 5 years of working (I think) you can try to apply for license in another state based on the fact you have experience.

Am I crazy or are these videos sped up?
@Joycethedentist5 жыл бұрын
kingofsweden2 lol you are totally not crazy. This video and the studying one have been sped up. I’m playing around with speed because I started listening to podcasts at 1.5x to absorb more info 😂. Open to feedback! Like? Dislike?

Omg I wish I watched this video when I was in third year dental school and I had to go into remediation! I was so, so, so depressed when I found out I had to remediate. I remember doubting myself and wondering if dentistry was actually right for me. I ended up killing reassessment and in a weird way I actually think it made me stronger for all other exams going forward. Because like you mentioned just the stress and anxiety of going to remediation and reassessment with the mindset of "I HAVE to pass this otherwise that's it! I've failed! And you have to re-do the year!" is really something else that no one else understands unless they've been through remediation and reassessment. Overcoming that kind of stress and anxiety takes a lot of mental toughness. So I really had to embrace the fact that every "failure" is just part of learning and becoming better and it's really not "failure" unless you give up. If you just keep going and striving to do better than it's just another opportunity to learn and strengthen your resolve and determination to see it through to the end! Thanks for sharing this!!! I don't know about you but I feel like it's pretty taboo for people in dentistry to talk about their "failures" or talk about being anxious and stressed out. So I really appreciate when I see videos like this of dentists just being super real!
