A lot of legacy game franchises, your Mega Mans and Zeldas and Castlevanias and Fantasies Final, have rich musical legacies. I don't think any of them have one as versatile as Sonic. This was only two years after Sonic 3 and two years before Sonic Adventure. None of those soundtracks sound like each other and they all sound incredible.

And all these franchises are in Super Smash Bros. it's amazing to think about to me. Like I probably would've never cared to step out and listen to the music from those series unless Smash gave me a taste of what they had to offer. I grew up with Sonic so I've been listening to the music for a long time. Heck if I hear a song, I can almost instantly tell you which game it's from, but I haven't even heard every Sonic song. A lot of people say this song was inspired by Enigma's Sadeness, but that's not 100% the full story. It was actually more likely to have been inspired by an SY99 Factory Demo track titled 'Gregorian' which uses the same vocal chants used in this song too. Said SY99 Factory Demo was very inspired by Enigma's Sadeness itself, which is why this song also sounds like it.

After a little digging, I found the sample of the low voices that that kick in at 1:36. It's from the "Gregorian" demo from the YAMAHA SY99 keyboard (you can hear it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKnJpYd_p5WshNUsi=Wfn1TWOdI2t4boc7). I also emailed Richard Jacques and he confirmed that he'd used this keyboard. It's the line "et in terra pax hominibus" from the Gloria from Mass XV (Dominator Deus). The exact recording it's taken from is from the Monks of l'Abbaye Saint Pierre de Solesmes (here it is on KZbin at 0:06 in, though the title is labelled incorrectly: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHqnh4GqmZp_psk). I'm not sure exactly which CD they would've found the chant on back in 1991, but at least we have the digitized version. The only reason I dug so much was because I heard it about a year ago and knew I recognized it and it was driving me crazy. Another meaningless mystery solved!

It's probably hard to imagine these days, but redbook audio was probably a shot in the arm for immersion with 2D games. Playing games like Mario 3, Zelda, Mega Man are great all around, but you encounter a game like Sonic CD or this game, and the soundtrack alone elevates the experience to something truly special.
