I have a confession. You opened my eyes to a true illness that exists. At first when I began watching the first videos you made, I thought people were just being lazy and wanted a free clean. But I see now how wrong I have been. I did not know, that depression does this to people. But after seeing so many of your videos now, I understand this is a true and very real illness. I’m so glad to hear that his family still tried to help after seeing the state of his apartment. An appallingly large amount of people who discover that kind of thing about their own child, especially when the sole reason is mental illness, react by blaming them, being disgusted in them, wondering what went wrong in raising them, punishing them to try and “make them do it better”, and trying to get them to realize that they just need to “wake up” and “get over it”. And this is why so many people hide that kind of thing and don’t seek help when they need it, because they think they will only be met with aggression and misunderstanding.

3:06 “Depression often makes you incapable taking care of basic needs.” As a nurse, we call this ability to take care of your basic needs “Activities of Daily Living” or ADLs for short. Here are a few examples: preparing food, feeding yourself, brushing your teeth, cleaning yourself (like taking a shower or bath), getting dressed, walking, using the restroom and cleanup afterwards. And I saved some of the best ones for last! ADLs that Auri helps with are washing dishes, cleaning your house, tidying up, and even some shopping for the person she is helping (like dish soap, toilet paper, scrubbers and cleaners, etc.) It is important to know if a person can perform their ADLs because we use this as a guide to assess if a person needs some extra help in their life. It doesn’t matter why someone cannot perform activities of daily living; many times a patient may have had an injury like a broken arm or leg. Maybe they have had a stroke or are developing dementia. Sometimes some mental health issues can get in the way of ADLs, which is something we often see in Auri’s videos. Thank you, Auri, for helping people with their Activities of Daily Living!!
@marianney76442 жыл бұрын
I never thought of it that way. I kind of couldn't understand how ppl let their home get to this type if condition. But your explanation of ADLs make 100% sense. My mind is blown. I just realised why my house is spotless but I'm overweight and unfit..I have no 'keep fit/exercise' ADLs in my daily life!!!! I'm thinking we cld apply this medical term to other aspects of our lives as well. Like ppl who struggle to save or take control of their money as well. Thanks Bonnie. Edit: I do understand ADLs are medical term not used to reference other areas of a person's life. It's just that this concept has changed my world view and how I've been approaching life.
@elisemichele26912 жыл бұрын
Thank you for explaining this!! I have some mental health issues that make taking care of certain ADLs, especially making food, very difficult and tiring. It can be so frustrating to try and explain executive dysfunction and how I would literally love to be able to accomplish basic tasks, but sometimes it is impossible. I've been able to figure out some workarounds that make things easier, but overall the support of friends and family has been SO helpful. I'm glad there are more people taking this seriously :')

For everyone who's overwhelmed with cleaning and have no idea where to start, here's how I do it after a chronic illness flare-up (depression hasn't kicked my ass that much yet, but the pain does) Pick 1 room, preferably one you use a lot Open all the windows if you can Pick up trashes, leave the bag in the room though, you might find more Pick a point in the room and clear it off Work around from that point a put things back, anything that belongs in a different room, put in a pile or basket, sort it later Wipe the surfaces - a quick anti-bac spray and a wipe is enough for now if you're overwhelmed Clean the floors (a sweep, mop or vacuum, whatever you think is best) Then move the stuff to other rooms and take out the trash. Repeat for as many rooms as you want, but once that first room's clean, it feels so much better. Alternatively, just pick up all the trash in the whole place, open the windows and leave it be for now. At least then the trash isn't attracting the nasties.
@rdb49962 жыл бұрын
What is helpful for me is to never walk around in my house empty handed. See something in the living room that needs to be upstairs? Bring it to the stairs when you use the bathroom. Going up the stairs to the washing machine? Bring that item upstairs etc etc. Or if you are capable, bring the whole bin in which you collected the items.

I know it's such a small thing but I just thought it was so sweet how instead of throwing away everything that was dirty, you kept little sentimental things that he might appreciate when he gets back from the hospital and is hopefully a lot better. I just thought it was such a sweet gesture that even for something so small, you would clean it rather than throw it away, even if it was just to demonstrate the Power Paste and Scrub Mommy. I am struggling with depression myself and while I can keep my place clean...can often do literally NOTHING I mean NOTHING else...😅 Like my house is only clean because I can't get myself to ever leave. I did technically go outside today to shovel snow but I can't bear talking to people. Sometimes I just get attacks where I can't speak to people for several days even through text.

Thank you for your videos ! First, you help people, then you motivate many others to clean their own Space ! Tidying up had always been a struggle for me, even if i grew up in a tidy and clean home. It was boring, I never liked it, so my room was a big mess. When I left my parents’ house, I kept my bad habits. My home never looked like the houses you’re cleaning, but I used to have clutter here and there. Now that I’m a mom, I try to do my best to keep my house tidy but it’s really exhausting as you’re constantly cleaning the same spots. Then you can’t clean all day long because you have to feed your baby, be quiet during the nap time… but I keep trying ! Your videos are really inspiring, and I bought a Scrub Mommy and a scraper after watching one of them ^^

I had developed a cluttered home after I began hoarding while I was in a domestic abusive situation. Just before Xmas I employed a company to help me. My homes now sparkling clean and enjoyable again, I donated most the items that I had been buying and unused and hoarding to the local old peoples homes, I had 200 jigsaws over 500 colouring books and pens and multiple pencil collections I donated, I threw out any out of date food and clothing that was too small for Mel it’s taken us about 1-2 hours a day for around 6 weeks to get straight again and now I can once again enjoy my homes it’s helped my mood so much and my mental health and well being as well, so I could focus on dealing with the police case and all the other issues while someone helped me get the home liveable again. Mine wasn’t dirty just cluttered as I’m in a tiny 1 bedroom place, I’m hoping to move house to a 2 bedroom soon and looking forward to doing so knowing most of the clutter is already dealt with and anything that could be donated to charity was. It took a while but it’s so much better, I feel better and enjoy my day now. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with it and so much nicer when someone can help to sort it out, you did an amazing job, I’m sure it helped so much, I personally feel like I’m in a brand new home now, thanks to people like you my homes now a home again

I'm crying as I admit this, but I wish you were in the USA because I could use this kind of caring help and motivation. I suffer from clinical depression and severe anxiety so my house looks very similar to the houses you clean. There is not one flat surface in my house that is not piled with stuff and there is not one room in my house that I could vacuum or mop the floors in right now because of all the clutter. My sink is always over flowing with dishes. This is very frustrating for me because I have always been a clean person. Even my self care has been effected. I keep watching your videos hoping it will give me the motivation to do something about it and it does make me want to but the depression keeps me from being able to actually do the work. I will just keep praying for the strength to fix my situation for my family because it is so not fair to my husband and kids to live like this! I feel so isolated because I can't have friends or family over. My depression and anxiety is so bad I can't even work anymore so we have money issues on top of it. You are such an angel on earth for doing what you do. And yes I have tried to seek help from doctors but they are only interested in over medicating me which doesn't help with the lack of motivation when you are lethargic. God bless you!

@@amritaj7487 I think these comments are helpful. Even if you suffer from depression, it is about doing just a little bit at a time. Just try to do one counter if you can and pitch the trash on that surface or re-home it to a better area. If you have so much stuff you can't use your space then you aren't enjoying it anyway. I think it is easy to feel overwhelmed, but just doing a bit at a time makes a surprising difference and it will help you feel better to know at least you have one surface cleaned up. I think a lot of people just try to take on too much at once and they find themselves overwhelmed.

You are truly an angel without wings! These people are so blessed by your work. I appreciate that you show compassion, empathy, and a non-judgmental attitude towards the people you clean for. As someone who has dealt with debilitating depression as well as health issues, I find it hard to ask for help. I feel ashamed and guilty for not taking care of my life. Two years ago I had severe depression while I was in charge of a women's retreat. I could not do what I needed to do and finally reached out to two friends. They met with me and said 'what do you need us to do?" They took care of everything. I did feel some guilt but also a lot of relief. You are amazing to give this gift to others.
