You learn to never be happy in front of narcissists because the narcissists then get envious of your happiness and do everything to remove your smile. We learn to never show our happiness and joy in order to avoid being attacked.

Yup! I've learned to tell my sister that I never do anything fun with my adult kids. I say that I never hear from them, and that I just don't enjoy celebrating birthdays, etc. For nearly 30 years, she has been insanely jealous that I have children, but she doesn't. So she tries to insert herself between me and my children, and tries to turn us against each other. She tries to spoil our birthdays and holidays. When she asks, I tell her the holiday was really boring, and that we didn't spend much time together. Additionally, I tell her I don't enjoy my job. I don't dare tell her that I have close friends. Thank heaven she lives far away now

Since one never "wins" with a narcissist; the saying should be rephrased to - the only way to not loose, is not to play.

I used to hide my feelings about the kids I liked in my neighbourhood because my Mother would tell me that they were really horrible kids and I should stay away from them. It really stopped me trusting my own perceptions. Which were correct, I realise now. They were great kids. She was jealous that I liked somebody besides her. She had to be the centre of my world. So insecure.

Pity you were not allowed to be ‘you’. To grow in character and share with new other children. You did however cotton on to her fragility and damaging traits. Well done.

I like the wording "wise as serpents and gentle as doves". It's in the Bible, Jesus said it to his disciples at Matthew 10:16,: Look! I am sending you out as sheep among wolves; so prove yourselves cautious as serpents and yet innocent as doves. In Jesus defense though, for his accurate choice of words according to the scriptural text, he was advising his disciples to not become blemished (remain innocent from) by the attitudes and untrained consciences of the world, those who would undermine the healthful teachings they were learning.

Very beautiful Matthew 10:16, I think you could find the answer to almost any problem in the Bible. I could probably cover that on my channel too..
