Deputy shoots, kills dog at Belton home on Fourth of July

Instead of shooting off fireworks, a family said goodbye to their pet on July 4, when a deputy shot and killed their dog in the driveway.

These no contact orders are handed out for any reason including plain old malice.What a shame that it was so stupidly delivered by someone who never should have been made a deputy. This family should sue and if there’s no merit to the ex parte order sue the party that applied for it.

Non-lethal method? Not when you're armed. It's the first thing you think of. The deputy was obviously not an animal person. Needs another job.

That is so sad. That officer should have acted in a more humane way especially in front of children. This was the family pet. That officer must have been afraid of dogs. Officers need better training if that's the case😢😢 as a dog owner my heart goes out to you

JOCO, Officers went through a huge reform few years ago and I can tell you it helped!!!! There is no reason for this!! in front of an 8 year old!!... -- The MO Cop, easily could've called in someone with a "Tranquilizer " -- if it was, "That Bad"... this is utter carelessness and Misuse OF POWER. I hope the family not Only SUES and WINS; but also gets a Petition started for the state of MO. To get better reform, for the police and necessary training for the police to go through, to *NOT over use your power* and Put Fourth * MORE MANDITORY Non-lethal* ways to handle situations like this IN THE WHOLE STATE. Also, look at the legal laws between KS AND MO. Laws of Pitt bulls. or Pit bull mix. I thought MO was a supportive state of Pitt bulls. Watch, this Cop, is prob. going to use, "It' was a Pit Bull", type of excuse" in court. -- This is Horrible!! One more time, *JOCO KANSAS POLICE*, HAVE BROUGHT BACK, MIX PITTBULLS, PITBULLS, TO THE HOMES THEY BELONG TO EASILY, WHEN GETTING LOOSE!!* You may get a warning, or be FINED, But they didn't whipped out a GUN, AND SHOOT THE ANIMAL. - PET. They never called the cops.. they served papers over his exs son who hasn't been around for a long time. No one called the cops. The no contact order was never even tested. He wasn't his dad and his ex had her own life. That dog has been our neighbor for a long time. He's never bit anyone. We've had issues with aggressive dogs. Our same kids got pulled into the literal street by other people's dogs. This is a horrible mind set to have. You should be ashamed of yourself

Why would anyone shoot a dog for barking at you to let you know you are in his territory and around his human? That's what dogs do! Did the dog attack the officer? Doesn't sound like it.

The dog was in the house and rushed to the door when the child opened it. You are just sticking up for a police officer who overreacted in the worst way. This is a tragic situation and no one wins with this outcome. Have some empathy and research the American Pitbull breed. They are not terrible dogs unless they are raised by terrible owners. I hope the child isn't forever affected by this incident.

Are you completely overlooking the fact that the daughter was opening the door when the dog rushed at the LEO. The LEO could have shot the daughter by mistake. In my opinion, he's a gunslinger and they make the worst kind of cops. Let's investigate his background and see what will turn up.
