A family's dog was killed by an off-duty deputy after the dog came running toward the off-duty deputy and his dog in Casselberry.

So sad... this couple lost their puppy. They should have taken more precautions because people are afraid of Rottweilers. They are often villianized by others because they can look scary. People who have Rotties, NEED to exercise a higher level of training and security to protect their dogs from situations like this.

I hate to see the loss of any animal however, your dog was off leash and out of your control while the other dog was on leash and under the control of its owner. You can yell my dog doesn’t bite all you want, but it obviously does as it attacked the other dog. Not certain how this is anyone else’s fault but your own for not controlling your animal.

A lawsuit that they will lose because they as owners were responsible to make sure their dog didn't run off and attack another dog being walked. Please pay for training when having a guard dog😒 people want to have these kind of dogs and then don't pay for extensive training on how to not attack other dogs and people. That could've been a child being attacked. Just dont have breeds that you can't handle as a dog owner. Never a dogs fault, always an owners responsibility.

Depends. Was he bit? You aren’t legally allowed to discharge a firearm to defend your dog from an attack, I learned that the hard way. But they likely will loose it as he’s a cop, and will get preferred treatment.

I had someone's mid-sized dog come at me barking. After I was already to the other side of their property, the owners came out and apologized. I said "It's okay, but if it even tries to bite me, I'll turn his name into 'Spot.'"

The officer did what he had to do. Look at the wounds on his dog. What was he supposed to do while his dog is being attacked.? I would have done the same thing. Why should you sue ? If you can't control your dog, don't have one. If anything the officer should sue them for the vet bills he has to pay.

Sorry for your loss but the dog attacked the other dig and injured it. It’s obviously aggressive and that was the unfortunate result. My dig was attacked I called the police. Animal control said I have every right to defend my dog.

I went thru this a few years ago with a German shepherd that got loose and attacked my dog pretty bad. Charges weren’t filed against me as it was self defense due to the fact I was bit as well and had to go to the hospital. Only thing I don’t get is the officer told me I’m cleared because I got bit, if I hadn’t I’d be in jail for brandishing, and discharging a firearm, since dogs are considered property and you can’t use a firearm to protect them. Also the cop put in my head what I did was dangerous due to the fact the other owner if he had a CCW as well could have shot me and said he thought I was gonna aim the gun at him with his adrenaline pumping, they’d get there with me on the ground and they likely would be justified. So he said to always take precautions. I get it, he protected his dog! But why is he above the law? He wasn’t bit. I bet they didn’t even take his firearm away till they decided not to file charges. He’s an officer so shouldn’t he know better? Like ever since that happened I purchased a taser, I’m sure any attacking dog would likely just be scared of the sound, yet alone the taser shocking them! Also carry pepper spray but I wouldn’t spray a dog due to the risk of backlash on me and my own dog getting hit, and yes I carry a firearm. But that’s the last thing I’d use! But seeing my dog get attacked like that infront of me, was horrible!

If I was walking my dog and a Rottweiler charged me and my dog and attacked my us I'd have done the EXACT same thing. Why is this even a story from this news station? Why are they "suggesting" the guy who shot the dog did anything inappropriate and WHY is the fact that he is an off duty sheriff's deputy have anything to do with this story? Me thinks something is going on and there is an agenda here, and it's unnecessary. According to every aspect of this story, the guy did nothing wrong and just interviewing the owner saying "it didn't have to happen" ..... well, my next door neighbor has a huge Rottie and he lunged at me from the other side of the fence one day (just a natural reaction because they had a large gathering and I was cutting the lawn and he ran towards the fence, jumped and snapped at me and missed my head by five inches - but again, it was a normal reaction as his protection instincts kicked in - and we were buddies five minutes later again) and there is no wiggle room to figure out if it "bites or not", regardless of what the owner says. Bottom line, Cash got out and attacked another person's dog. Sorry, but that's the end result when you have a large breed dog what does something like that. I see a Pitt or Rottie or Cane Corso or whatever, aggressively charging at me or a family member, I'm grabbing my Glock and there really isn't any other way to put it. Control your animals.

I'm NOT a pussy that needs a gun to kill someone else's beloved pet to save mine regardless of fault. I've had big dogs for 30+ years and I haven't seen a dog fight where I alone couldn't separate and control both dogs. I go to several dog parks, my dog is with me 24/7/365 and I'm not even kidding, I see big dog fights frequently and I get involved. I NEVER hear, citizen shoots neighbors dog that attacked his dog on a walk. Citizens, NO! Law Enforcement off duty shooting people's dog's, YES, more frequently than I like.

The dog accidentally ran out the door, the owner ran after his dog saying,"he is okay!!" To the officer. These officers shoot to kill why didn't he use his taser. It is like the incident when that golden retriever got loose and she ran to the officer to play with him then the officer shot her. I am so sick of these officers shooting their guns instead of using their taser. That Rottweiler was only 3 years old. Just a puppy. What if my cat accidentally got loose and he ran towards the officer will the officer shoot my cat? These cops need more training towards dogs behavior. I can tell he takes good care of his dog plus dogs sometimes run out of the house by accident, the Rottweiler wasn't just roaming the streets like some of these irresponsible pet owners.

Not a fan of cops, but the owners were clearly at fault here. Officer was off duty - unlikely they would be carrying a taser and a handgun while off duty. A three year old dog is not the same as a three year old child. Dogs can be considered puppies up to 1-2 years old, depending on the size and breed. We have several cats, all adopted from the same litter as kittens. We still call refer to them as the kittens, but they are 5-5 years old, clearly not what someone would call a kitten.
