Cholera being a siren fits even better if you read “Love in the time of cholera” being a disease whose symptoms get compared to how it feels like falling in love. That’s why I vote for her name to be Fermina, the book protagonist that brought those symptoms to two other men.

I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet but if and when you draw COVID-19 you _have_ to make them a king or a queen. Another reason why the plague doctors wore those long masks and stuffed the beaks with aromatic herbs and flowers was to ward off the smell of death and disease. In recovered plague doctor journals, they said said that the smell was so awful and potent that if you didn't have use any fragrances, the smell itself would make you ill, triggering severe nausea.
3 жыл бұрын
this is actually true! :) i’m very interested in plague doctors and that kinda stuff so i do my research and i’ve seen this tons of times on google so this is correct ☺️
@annoyingperson2 жыл бұрын
They believed that bad smells (miasma) caused disease, which is why they’d use flowers and herbs to get rid of it. This is also where they thought cholera came from, since it comes from yucky sewage water. Also did you know that when the first vaccine was ever made, some people believed that taking it would cause you to grow cow horns.
@Officalkaylakaniyalucky262 жыл бұрын
Plague Doctor Perfect!🤩🤩🤩🤩
@juliabarrow-hemmings66242 жыл бұрын
Back then it was actually widely believed that bad smells were the cause of all disease (Which is understandable, most things likely to cause disease smell bad), hence the fragrances were thought to literally ward off the pestilence (Which they didn't, black death isn't an airborne disease). Oddly enough the first evidence against this theory was brought about because of Cholera in one of its many, many outbreaks a doctor called Jon Snow (No really) did some studying and traced the outbreak back to its patient zero and the causing incident, sadly Miasma theory was still too popular for his ideas to be accepted at the time but oh well. Oh, also he recommended people drink more alcohol to avoid cholera but he himself never drank alcohol as he was wealthy enough to afford distilled water.
@royalecarmen9837 Жыл бұрын
It was actually transmitted through fleas, but the long cloaks were covered in something I think wax, and the fleas couldn’t grip on. So the masks weren’t actually doing anything, every just had to wear wax (or whatever the stuff was) covered skirts

fun fact, the reason it was called a "romantic disease" is because it was incredibly common for tragic characters in romantic literature to suffer from it. It was incredibly common to have the beautiful, lovely, noble maiden fall in love with someone, whilst their skin paled in conveniently fashionable manner (pale skin was one of the beauty standards at the time) and their frame thinned (again, beauty standard, even more than today. you know what corsets are), be prone to dramatically fainting or elegantly coughing up blood into their delicate handkerchiefs, and then tragically dying in the arms of their beloved. it was kinda like those viral but harmful fads we get on the internet nowadays, but back then it was "being afflicted by a deadly disease with horrible symptoms" instead of "eating tide pods", and it was spread through cheap, formulaic, tragic love stories rather than internet memes and news headlines making fun of the younger generation. And it was even more widespread and fashionable than eating tide pods ever was... there were times when suicide rates went *dramatically* up after novels in which a tragic romance resulted in the deaths of the characters.
@applejuicenpeach4 жыл бұрын

Just because I’m a huge nerd, heres a list of epidemics/pandemics for anyone who has art block/is just kinda curious 1. Polio (eradicated in most of the world) Symptoms: fever, sore throat, headache, vomiting, meningitis, loss of reflexes, spasms, muscle pain, sudden paralysis 2. Spanish Flu Symptoms: normal flu symptoms however many developed severe pneumonia; dark spots on cheeks, bluish skin from lack of oxygen, lungs filled with frothy, bloody substance 3. Leprosy Symptoms: skin lesions, decreased sensation in patches of skin, muscle weakness, ‘glove and stocking anesthesia’, eye problems, paralysis of small muscles, enlarged nerves leading to necrosis 4. Measles (was eradicated, came back) Symptoms: fever, cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes, tiny white spots on the lining on the cheek, rash 5. Small Pox (eradicated) Symptoms: high fever, malaise, fluid filled blisters which then scab, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea 6. Ebola Symptoms: diarrhoea, vomiting, aches and pains, fever 7. H1N1 (swine flu) Symptoms: regular flu symptoms but more intense. Generally, the WHO was criticised for overreacting about the outbreak of the virus and causing unnecessary panic. 8. SARS & MERS Symptoms: Fever, cough, Respiratory issues. Its similar to COVID-19 in genetic composition but its far more severe with a far higher mortality rate. BONUS: 9. Yellow Fever Symptoms: fever, headache, jaundice, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. About 15% of people who get yellow fever develop serious illness that can lead to bleeding, shock, organ failure, and sometimes death.

My friends and I would joke about these harmlessly and would just talk about them, saying that since these all happened in things like 1720, 1820, 1920, and next it would be 2020, but then when the coronavirus came we weren't even able to go to each others houses because of it. My bestie texted me saying we cant even meet outside without some sort of protection. I felt like my parents and her parents were overreacting about it, but then I looked at the death rates and knew this was a serious pandemic. Please sanitize and wash your hand regularly and stay safe
@starballoon23184 жыл бұрын
The coronavirus is not deadly. The flu actually kills more people. You're only in danger if you are 60 or older, or if you have an underlying health condition that has extreme or respiratory conditions. Besides, I know someone who has it, and apparently its like the flu for your lungs. Get education about these things and don't just look at the death rate. Sorry for the long comment lol

Starstuff you are the one who needs to get educated and not spread false truths about something as serious as this. I don’t know where the “it’s not as bad as the flu” thing is coming from but I’ve heard it a lot. Sadly that’s completely inaccurate. The death rate for the flu is .4% and the death rate for the coronavirus is 3%. Yes it does more heavily effect people with weakened immune systems, like the elderly, but that doesn’t mean you still wouldn’t have a 3 out of 100 chance of dying as well if you got it. Please stay informed and don’t say anything that isn’t backed by fact. It could be extremely harmful.
@aduckinlingerie4 жыл бұрын
Person who is here I guess I feel like it should be clarified that the purpose of spreading that info that starstuff wrote is to calm people down NOT to tell ppl to stop washing their hands and taking the actually necessary precautions. I know a lot of people with bad anxiety who are freaking out because of corona virus and I kid you not my friend told me the other day that she was scared of Chinese people. You’d think she wouldn’t say that to her Chinese friend but fear brings out the worst in people. So yes, please wash your hands and try to avoid going to crowded areas and such but no, there’s no point in freaking yourself out after you’ve done *all that you can do*. At that point just live your life *safely* and hope for the best

The black death monster should have been based off of SCP-049 aka the plague doctor but more plague ish looking with crow like end towards you ground slightly covering your legs look you know make that look like long feather like look black and make claw things at the end of his gloves. And give him a cane with the top look like a crow's head and the rest of the cane spell out pestilence and his hood always up making a erie shadowy look upon his mask and the mask must be white and the eye holes black. Now the eye holes must look like there is no eyes but the pupils are small with a roundish slit shape and are glowing white and for the expression those pupils change shape and he is wearing a long black cloak and he is wearing a belt with golden parts at the ends. Now be aware his gloves have blood stains and on the top of his gloves there are a white picture of a small mouse head with x (aka dead) eyes and under the picture it says "I Am The Cure". And there you have the perfect monster look for the black death. And yea DO IT! Because I am a perfect example of work. I am an artist who is adored by all.

@@kat4827 Same. My whole school is stuck at home for the next three weeks and a lot of fun places like museums around my area are closed as well as the indoor exhibits at my local zoo. But hey, before we all know it, this whole scare will be over by then.

@Storm_FatCat actually, the "ashes ashes" lyric comes from burning the dead. Ring around the rosie refers to the bumps ms towne was talking about Pocket full of posies is people carrying around flowers to "clear the air" like the plague doctors thought to do with their masks Ashes ashes was the burning of the dead bodies to prevent the spread We all fall down is it taking out A LOT of the european population

fun fact: tuberculosis in eastern europe was also known as the sickness of the poor. my great grandparents both died of it in Ukraine since they both lived in poverty and there was no protection from the spread of infections edit: this was in the 30's i never met them!!!!

Same. My great grandad's twin siblings died from TB in the 1930s I reckon at least half of us have a relative who passed from it.
