Basically that’s the entire history of politics in just 20 seconds. Melted right through my rubber cover and shoe and into my big toe. And no I could not sue because that was the "risk" and having to take a loan out to float by for two months while my foot healed and not have a big toe either.

I've known many ppl who should be on disability, but the system is so difficult to navigate (especially for the mentally ill), and not all disability conditions qualify for assistance. It's a deeply flawed system. I would never shame someone for being unable to work, ever. Those who could work but don't want to should still be kept alive, just at the bare minimum level; if those folks want more, they can work for it.

I went from a gas (stove, water heater, and heat) and electric unit to an all electric unit, and guess what, during Winter, Fall, and Spring, my utility bill was $80 dollars cheaper per month, but in the Summer my utility bill was almost $160 cheaper a month. Gas units aren't cheaper to operate than electric ones unless your electric rates are nuts, but *converting* from from gas to electric is what people cannot afford because it isn't free. You'd have to buy all new appliances and whatever accompanies it, get your gas service cut off, remove gas fixing such as flues, pipes, etc, update your breaker box and breakers and outlet, and possibly pay for installation and removal of old appliance. I've done it a few times and it isn't cheap, so paying someone else to do it could break the bank for some people. The cost of all of that have poor people risking house explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Sure it's more environmentally, but we're from a country that spent 60 years denying and belittling the consequences of pollution, and enforcing and encouraging poverty practices, so is it any wonder that breathable air and a livable climate isn't a priority over personal finances?

I used to work in right wing radio in Wisconsin. Part of my job was screening calls. I was a conservative at the time, I am now in recovery. When I was young I would have LOVED to not been in low-income housing, but I can't help hear him say "it just encourages people not to get married" and think about how as a gay person, when I was in my 20s, I wasn't even legally allowed to get married. And even now that I'm older and more well off, I'm still not married, not entirely by choice, but because I haven't found the person I want to marry yet. It's not like getting married is something you just wake up one day and go do.

He’s right. Literally he’s right. I live in NYC my whole life. I know plenty of people on welfare and section 8 who don’t even think about rent and stuff like that. I have what’s considered great union insurance. They only give 1500 dollars a year for dental. My friend who’s been on Medicaid his whole life was astonished when he found out that I had to take a loan out for work done on my teeth. Thousands of dollars that I have to pay off in three years. He was like you’re insurance don’t pay for that? I was like NO. He was also astonished one day while we were in CVS and I had to pay around a hundred dollars in copays for medication. He was like what’s that? He didn’t even know what copay was. His Medicaid pays everything. We should all have that. All of us should have Medicare for all.

Yes, there are, but most of them require a lengthy application process and needs testing. I also found that I was not eligible for many of them because of my irresponsible lack of dependent children. So for two months, I cooked on a grill, fired by wood that I gathered from my back yard. Water was obtained from my neighbors' garden hose and stored in my garden tub and a variety of coolers. Hygiene was accomplished with water heated on that same grill. So yes, congressman, this poor person knows exactly what his electric bill is, as well as the large percentage of his monthly income it comprises. Eventually, I was able to enroll in my electric company's "pay as you go" program, which enabled me to restore service, while avoiding the undoable $600 deposit that would have been required in order to resume regular service. You pay the company upfront, and they subtract from the balance on a daily basis. This has proven to be a mostly satisfactory solution for me, but once the balance hits zero, the power goes off, but unlike regular accounts, there are no extensions or payment plans. The power stays off until more money is received. This arrangement is also ineligible for assistance from any of the various programs that ordinarily help with such situations. I have not run my very capable central HVAC system in over two years, because to do so would be cost prohibitive. (Again, FLORIDA!) It's summer now, and the the ambient temperature in most of the house hovers at around 88F°. I long for winter. I was able to install a window unit in the bedroom, which has provided cost efficient relief, but still leaves me with 1500 square feet of very uncomfortable house. I was not poor until recently, and what my newfound poverty has taught me is that being so is incredibly labor intensive. It's not that low income people are lazy, congressman, its that their efforts to just exist require an effort that leaves them so exhausted and demoralized as to make bootstrapping almost laughable.

Poor bashing aside, as someone who enjoys cooking, electric convection stoves are far more efficient and might not kill you in the middle of the night due to a leak, they also heat the pan evenly every time. The only adjustment needed is if you really enjoy using cast iron skillets.

I have a gas stove/oven also have a co2 meter, the stove has an above range microwave and my townhome does not have any venting above stove t can vent to the exterior, with one large burner on the room exceeds a safe level for co2 (it's at a level where it is advisable to leave the room) try cooking a turkey safely. I can't afford to run electric to replace my appliance as it would also require an upgraded electrical panel but there's no reason on new construction that electric is installed instead of gas. PS Induction electric stoves are quicker to boil water then any gas stove.

Gas is typically cheaper than electricity, but thanks to how inefficient gas stoves are their operating cost is rarely much lower than electric stoves.

When I grew up from 1967 to 1984 we had Natural Gas . Furnace and Hot Water . ONLY had a smell of gas once . The gas company was there in 15 minutes . The design of the System needs to by set up properly . Vent for your furnace and HW .

Here in Canada they pushed for everyone to natural gas, we love our natural gas, safe, economical and clean. Now they are pushing water pump heaters and eliminate wood stoves as well. We live very rurel. We have winter with - 40 Celsius that last for 8 months. We survive on wood heat. Thats like 0 degrees for Americans. Canada so green,that we actually clean more carbon out of the air then we produce, yet we pay a huge carbon tax on all gas, natural and focile. Did i spell that right. I live in BC. It isn't true that a gas stove is cheaper to operate it depends on the area. Half the time gas is more expensive. In most places the difference between the two is very small, like $20 a year. Gas should be even a worse option in the future because solar and wind is very cheap.
