Today I spoke with Clay Arnall, who grew up in the Christian Alliance denomination but ultimately deconverted as he investigated the truth claims of Christianity.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Being taught that there were angels and demons all around him.
• Declaring his faith in Jesus multiple times to be sure that he was saved and not going to end up in hell.
• Seeing the hardcore Christian indoctrination dynamic of Christians not having a true option, without threat, to disbelieve or really investigate other worldviews.
• Observing the Christian assumption that "we're right and everyone else is wrong."
• Questioning the strong emphasis in many churches on everyone needing to "feel good."
• Thinking through whether the dopamine euphoria is actually evidence of a god's presence, realizing that people can artificially create and induce those feelings, and how that has "become Christianity" to many people.
• Being afraid that god might call him to be a full-time missionary, even though he didn't want to do it.
• Facing the mental gymnastics of god causing bad things to happen vs. bad things simply being the result of sin.
• Seeing that within Calvinism, people who are not elect have no chance to believe, but they are still condemned by god.
• The cognitive bias that leads Christians to think that god can do no wrong and that anything that happens in life is part of his trustworthy "plan."
• Realizing that much of Christianity boils down to carrot-and-stick dynamics.
• Learning that Christians have always had various interpretations of hell.
• Being told that god would reward him in life if he stayed away from alcohol and remained a virgin till marriage.
• Seeing most Christians ignore him after he deconverted.
• Realizing that many of his struggles with depression dissipated once he deconverted.
• Understanding that Christian theology amounts to psychological child abuse.
• The importance of trying to avoid unnecessary antagonism in discussions with loved ones who are still stuck in Christianity.
Many thanks to Clay for sharing his story and for all he does for the community!

“Christianity is a book club” 😂 ❤. I too began to question the Bible when I noticed that after/during my daily personal reading time that I felt bad about myself. I questioned, “why do I beat myself up every time I read my bible? Is that love? Is that how a love letter feels? I don’t think so.”

everyone should question the bible the minute they read about a talking snake convincing people to eat an apple which condemns humans for the rest of eternity. religion is about making u feel guilt and shame. if ur spouse did that to u, you'd call them a narcissist. every religious person thinks they're a piece of crap that needs saving from the entity that created them the way they are in the first place

No it isnt love. Jesus IS love itself Dorthey. No he doesnt want us too, or require us to beat ourselves (or anyone else) up. Anything else besides love, is of evil. Let me ask you this. If you say No God. OK then the flip side is evil right? So if no God, then is no evil. I see much proof of evil. I see much proof of good too. Love of family, love you have for your child. Love you have for a pet. Love is around too. So by denying good which is God. You deny evil which is the devil. A white lie is sin. A mean thought is sin. Love for a child is good. You don't have one without the other. Just like are some people who are some who are in professions they shouldn't be. Are some preachers who shouldn't be. Religion complicates things. Being a Christian actually breaks chains. It's choosing the love, the good, the helping. As Jesus did. It's choosing Jesus. It's not Religion. It's a way of life. We aren't perfect. I'm just a human. I mess up. The difference, I am just forgiven. Jesus teaches and leads us to do the good. To be love. But you do have to have good, as we clearly have evil. The world certainly given us many examples. Especially latley I have a question for you. It's been roughly 2000 years since Jesus died. BTW hes coming back soon. Why our world spinning out of control. As we were told it would. But why, in 2000 years. When someone gets hurt, use the name of Jesus as a swear word? If nothing to this. Why wasn't he forgotten 2000 years ago? No one says "oh Budda "when whacks hand with a hammer. Why? Because evil wants his name a swear word. Why? Because the Christians are right. Jesus is coming back. And its time to wake up. Jesus died by choice on the cross. To save us. Because he loved us so much. His blood if accepted will wash you white as snow. He was buried, rose again on 3rd day. And is alive forever more. And hes coming back. 2000 years later as promised. We all have free will. But hope you might consider what iv said. Peace to you Dorthey. I wish you well. ❤

Well no, you have not been fooled. You made a choice to believe in a faith that’s based largely on scripture written over time by other people and given arbitrary canonicity whereupon all subsequent dogma and recognition of divine revelation and historical perspectives were theologically centric as opposed to empirically derived. In fact, belief in God, BibleGod, prophets and a divine saviour may well be Truth. You can’t know. Certitude isn’t part of the deal. It may also all be false, subjective and alive only in the minds of religious folk. The pursuit of academic scholarship, science, psychology and common sense suggest all our religious notions are low on a probability scale. After deconversion I tend to live in that reality. Experience in churches has left me wholly cynical of organized religion. Faith is personal. It should be kept there. Humility and openness to the possibility of something transcendent doesn’t seem like intellectual suicide, but beyond that…well. By default, we were not here, we are now, then we are not. Live in the moment, be in the present, love yourself, care for others, be charitable as you are able, and don’t look down too much on religious folk especially given some of us were right in there at the centre for decades. But do run from the fundies😝

Hi! I'm also an infj personality type and I'm currently deconverting from an intense 2 year Christian stint. I had become convinced that Hell and Satan are real & I always wanted to be on the good side of things, so I should worship the God of the Bible & I thought I had been wrong to dismiss that God & Jesus. I attended a church which was great actually but when I was reading the Bible on my own time & seeing all the insane horrible things the God of Israel did in the old testament I started questioning things. I'm still terrified of Hell, so I'm not sure about dismissing Jesus 100%, but I'm definitely not dedicating all my time to Christianity like I did for those 2 years. If anyone here has tips on how to get over the fear of Hell, let me know. Thank you ❤❤❤
@donaldlawson1334
@donaldlawson1334 9 ай бұрын
@@jasminemariedarlingI’m sorry you’re struggling with this fear. I’m a former believer myself and the fear does hit me from time to time though it’s gotten much better. What’s helped for me the most is the following: 1. The Jews didn’t hold to the modern Christian view of hell. This is a later development within Christianity both in the New Testament and in church tradition. Much of the concept actually comes from Greek mythology which heavily influenced early Christianity (i.e. Paul the Apostle). 2. If there is an all loving god like the one modern Christian’s believe in, he wouldn’t send people to hell for not believing in him. And if he did, would he be worthy of our worship? Wouldn’t heaven with this evil god essentially be a form of hell? 3. It just isn’t true. After seeing all of the flaws within the belief system and its theology it has become clear to me it’s all man made. In my opinion hell has developed this way because those writing about it were suffering and desired justice against those inflicting the suffering. It could also be a tactic to keep people on the straight and narrow. A loving god who cares about people believing for the right reasons wouldn’t create this dynamic where people would believe simply to escape hell. What this does is creates fearful believers instead of believers who are simply attracted the truthfulness of his existence and his perfection, beauty, glory, majesty etc.

It also confirms my view, that atheists take religion in all its structure and implications much more serious than average believers. 1:44:45 "Messages need to be modified depending on the person". Yes. Yes. And yes again. This is one of the ways in which Christian theology can be so blind to its own faults, and so harmful to people. People are different in so many ways and therefore will respond to the one message in varying and often contradictory ways. For example, as you once pointed out Tim, Calvinist theology can be very comforting to some people but can cause extreme worry in other people. How does one know that one is saved? One person might feel that they know, and therefore live a comfortable Christian life. Another person will live, perpetually haunted by the fact that they do not know, not really, and thus will be scared that they could be slated for eternal conscious torment in hell. Yet, because Christians assume that their message is the one and only true message, given to them by God, then they have every right to teach the one message in the same way, and that all people will understand it in the same way, and so are free to accept or reject. But all people will not understand it in the same way. A part of understanding is also responding and one believer may respond with comfort and another with deep anxiety. Yet both people will have accepted the message. If only Christians could pull the blinders off and see just how much damage their theologies can do. 1:58:00 "psychological child abuse". Ain't it so funny though. There are those verses in the bible, 1 Peter 2:12-22, informing Christians to live such exemplary lives that we flock to them, wanting to know what they have which is so great. And if they are unable to live those beautiful lives then there are the other verses, John 14:12-14, informing them that all they need to do is ask and they will be able to do even greater works than Jesus did. Yet they still need threats of hell, and theologies like "filthy rags" to get and to keep people in the fold. Basically these make a lie of those other verses. Again. Brilliant discussion. +++ Heh. What stopped me from sleeping at night happened way back in the very early 1960s. Black and white TV had just been introduced into Australia. We did not have TV but friends did. I was about 11 years of age and we visited our friends. We children were so fascinated by TV that while the adults were talking in another room, we kids watched a Sherlock Holmes movie "The Scarlet Claw". The movie was about a murderer who roamed about the moors of Wales (I think) ripping out the throats of his victims with a garden weed pulling claw shaped device. I still remember that night, home in bed. It took me hours to get to sleep and every small noise made by the house or from the surrounding countryside, utterly froze me. For years afterwards, I slept in my bed, deeply hidden under the bedsheets and blankets. No demons in that one. Just a murderer with a claw shaped device, ripping out the throats of his victims.

Not sure how to phrase it exactly, but the one thing that keeps me from being able to be Christian is the entire premise of it needing to believed. It's a set of unbelievable beliefs. Believing it doesn't make it so. But that's where you proverbially have to sign on the dotted line, a proverbial deal with the devil, to believe the divinity, but also believe the church or churches. If asked why I'm an atheist, my response is basically that Christians and churches won't let us be anything else, because they require that belief in unbelievable things component. If they were more inclusive and didn't require statements of faith, then we could all be Christians. But unfortunately, being open minded and promoting open and inclusive societies isn't their thing. I believe Jesus existed, I believe the movement he was a part of eventually became Christianity, I believe to an extent that the church was founded on him (not necessarily that he founded it, that parts dubious). When it comes down to it, I sometimes tell Christians that I believe in Jesus more than they do, and believe in religion itself more than they do because of this. There's a real historical Jesus and hisbmovement in a historical context which is tragic and beautiful in its own right without the need to condemn me and everyone else on earth for not believing ij the floaty heaven stuff, or the half wicked Old testament God. Ultimately, it's like they founded their system on the heresy of imagining things to be true, and that's something i can't change my mind on for their sake, my belief is I have ti have integrity and can only know what is known. Nothing was actually revealed with revealed religion. And it's why church goers and believers aren't any better than anyone else, they just believe the things for the sake of it, and often include a lot of questionable societal beliefs and norms in their views as well. At face value, they don't want to help save the world and they don't want their god to either They prefer the damnation and dangling the sword of Damocles of perpetual end times over everyone else's heads. It's pretty sick tbh. Anyway, thanks Tim!

Just so you know, Meyers-Briggs is not scientifically reliable or valid. It has the same qualities as astrology. It is so vague, everyone can identify with some aspect of all of the descriptions. And there are innumerable explanations for exceptions, eg. well that's because of Mars that day, or with MBTI, you were pushed to be more perform so you are extraverted in X situations. So as with astrology, if people are given random personality descriptions, they will identify their label. And they are unable to choose their "correct" label out of random descriptions. It's bunk.

I have, for many years, had issues with Christ's death (assuming that he really was crucified, and if so, whether he actually died) really *atoning* for anything: look at the state of the world, then and now, and ask whether it truly is *redeemed*. True: Christianity represents progress in morals and social values; but the teachings are found in other religions, too. As a christian, I always believed that god was sovereign, and would protect His holy message in the Bible. Ur work of uncovering the various mythologies in our holy scripture is blowing my mind🤯😁🥰 And freeing my mind of the mental gymnastics n cognitive dissonance. It's such a great relief!!!🦋💖 #Buybull

@@Fourwindsofsuccess oh so all he signs happening are by accident? Cbdc one world currency? Sdg one world govermnt? Did you hear about Amazon one? Technology for mark of beast. Check into it. I'm sure you get the significance of this. And that's just a few things going on. Rest of signs are here too. Not to mention very late into fig tree generation. It's been 2000 years since Jesus was crucified. The exact time he said he be back. Jesus said 2 days. 1 day to God is a 1000 years. So fact world going bonkers at that mark. It's not by chanse. I agree alot of church dont preach gospal. It's all acceptance, and feel good messages. Not what people need to hear. What they want to hear. They need truth. Truth is. Our current world order is sinking fast. Go look at sdg goals. 17 of them. It got signed Sept 19th. How do they plan to impliment goals? Cbdc. Central Bank digital currency. All digital, allowing full tracking and ability to cut off access. Is this ringing a bell? Amazon palm. Seriously check it out. Think for yourself. Goodness Ai is currently rewritting Bible. As we were told. One world religion Isreal coming back to promise land. As told. Don't take my word for it. Check for yourself. Think for yourself. And any question I'd be happy to do what I can. But make no mistake. It's end times. Peace to you and much love. I truly wish you well. In Jesus name

I like Bart Ehrman too. Gospel of Luke has Jesus sweating blood, but the oldest known manuscripts of Luke don't have the phrase. At the time, there was an argument going on about whether Jesus was Divine only or human and Divine. Obviously, a sneaky scribe wanted to make him more human. Wonder how many sneaky scribes got their nibs out on the old scrolls? 📜 🤔 😢 😮

That bit about music is something that annoys me to no end about so called "religious experiences". Any strong feeling in a group setting suddenly belongs to the religion. Instead of a rush of endorphins which promotes pro-social feelings because we're a social species and rely on the group for survival and have developed ways of amplifying those positive feelings. Instead it's an invisible wizard. Aside from being dishonest about what the feeling is, it's boring. Instead of developing your understanding of neurochemistry and evolutionary forces, it encourages you to stop thinking about things at all. Just insert the magic man and turn your brain off. Ick.

Hey, guys, don't worry about what people say because if they're Christians, then they're not doing what the Bible says and showing love. Try an remember that, and you are loved by many people that listen to you, i'm sure take care.

Yep Saul is Paul but who in reality was a merciless violent murderer since he saw the light or Jesus Christ he becomes this ‘saved’ individual then he ch ages his name to Paul instead. There’s so many Christians themselves who forgets this or people who tampers with the Bible that’s not truly converted because they’re just as lost. Paul is definitely a weirdo.

True. Saul's name change is a red flag for a thug trying to reinvent himself. Unfortunately, his negative base nature continued in his pursuit of his fictional version of Jesus and his teachings, which have either been so bastardised that they became word salad, or were a complete fabrication.
