It's about having a solid plan. Without one you'll most likely be fighting an uphill battle either way. One of my old friends dropped out first chance to start building up money and has been doing pretty good for himself for a while now. A lot of people live rent free for years and could easily pay off a house by 30 with almost any old job but choose to piss that time and/or money away instead. If you're young and know college isn't for you then start saving up money as soon as you can. Especially if you have the chance to do it while not paying bills. Owning property and avoiding a lengthy mortgage by the time you hit 30 will put you ahead of a lot of uni grads.

I mean...the reason the very wealthy send their children to these expensive universities is two-fold. One is to get a degree from a renowned university, and the accreditation which accompanies that. The other, and possibly more relevant in the given scenario, is the access to networking through various organizations with all of the alumni whom were prior graduates.

@@dbz287 You're highlighting the problem though. People are told they need to go to college to be successful, but many don't know what they want to do they only know they NEED to go. So they pick a useless degree without many opportunities at the end. Potentially wasting years of their life. Such people might still do better than average in lifetime earnings regardless, but I think that has more to do with the demographic of people who have the option to waste years on a useless degree. Most people from poor working class families with limited support can't jerk off in college for years to get a degree that leads nowhere. They have to go work a deadend job to make ends meet, so it's not the 'useless' degree helping, it's the background of the demographic. With the exception of stem or high demand qualifications. Virtually no one doing underwater lesbian basket weaving studies is doing better in life BECAUSE of that degree, it's due to them belonging to a privileged enough demographic to jerk off for years and still land on thier feet. Can virtually guarantee nobody from an unsupported background is better off because of a useless degree like this, assuming they had the luxury to waste years in the first place.

The entire debate is badly framed anyway. The reason someone with a master's degree is usually happier is because they get paid better, have better benefits, and less hours in the job they have gotten as a result of their education, but in a hypoethical world where waiting actually didn't have absolutely dogsh*t pay and benefits, there would probably be a lot people who were perfectly happy doing it. In other words: The problem isn't the job itself, it's what you get for doing it.

Speaking as someone who has been an software engineer for 30 years (Math degree), I would say unless you are a dropout with a very impressive set of GitHub repos and previous work, you need a degree. Not just because the employers look for it, but because computer science is rapidly changing and simple professional training won't cut it anymore. If you want to work at a company like Google, Apple, or Microsoft, and pull down $200k+/yr or more, you need a background that prepares you for these changes. For example, take data science. AI Models are rapidly moving into low-end code generation, and it may very well be in 10 years, a lot of low hanging programming work is simply automated and fewer programmers are needed because of the amplified productivity the tooling will give. If you went to college and studied a lot of "useless" courses that don't apply to everyday corporate enterprise software, you may very well find yourself prepared for this future. When I studied Math in the 90s, it was because I *loved* math, I was passionate about it, not because it was a highly sought after degree. Back then, a Math degree got you a job as an educator or at the NSA. By serendipity, the internet revolution happened, and a lot of Math overlapped with a lot of advanced computer science. My first job out of school was working at IBM TJ Watson research on cryptodigital digital currency and checking, a predecessor to cryptocurrency today. I would say go for Breadth, rather than Depth. Learn from a wide variety of areas to maximize your chances. Just narrowly focusing on a professional degree training in one field may end up dead-ending you if the future turns out differently. College should be about exposing you to a wide variety of ideas, people, and teaching you to learn how to learn. Steve Jobs created the Mac based on a "useless" Calligraphy class he was exposed to that gave him a fascination around fonts. This conservative woman too narrowly thinks of the purpose of college as job training. I think of it as character building. And to pooh-pooh the humanities? One of the reasons why US still dominates in innovation and creativity over places like China is that the Chinese educational system is ruthlessly professional driven and regimented, they don't have the concept of "liberal arts". It is at the intersection of humanities and STEM that we see innovation. To study languages, art, philosophy, politics, psychology AND a technical field makes you better able to address the needs of people. I get why she's mad, she was deluded to think an English degree meant she could work in insurance automatically. Why didn't she do an internship at an insurance company while still in college then? Sounds to me like she just went to class, got her 4.0, but didn't do anything else?

​@@tonytanner3048 Degrees are already declining in importance in STEM, they get you past the initial filter in a stack of resumes and into the interview, but when I interview people, I'm less concerned with your degree, and more concerned with how you do on the whiteboard, or what previous projects you've worked on. I've interviewed people who have had fantastic, pristine resumes, and then when I asked them to solve relatively simple problems, they couldn't do it. One guy I interviewed from a defense contractor had 10 years of software engineering experience, but couldn't implement a heap, or a recursive decent parser for JSON. And that's kind of the difference between 'professional' training in coding, going to do a few week course to learn HTML/JS or Java/Ruby, etc and someone who has done years of actual computer science classes. Many enterprise companies might be happy with the former, but FANG companies tend to look for 'generalists', and they want more of the latter. However, with a professional training in coding, there are ample jobs out there in the Fortune 500 space.

As a medical student, listening to this discussion was infuriating. I have worked as a medical scribe in several different offices including orthopedic surgery, psychiatry, and family medicine. The notion that doctors "prioritize prescribing medication over natural solutions" is ridiculous. If a patient comes in and their blood pressure is a little high one time (controlling for white coat syndrome), the recommendation from every doctor worth their salt (lol) is diet and exercise. When patients come in a 2nd or 3rd time with HTN, then they get a diagnosis and a recommendation for medication. It is only after the failure of conservative treatment that we go to medications. Also, this kind of "conservative treatments first mentality persists in surgical settings as well. Unless you have a severe injury that requires immediate attention or a chronic history of disease with FAILURE OF CONSERVATIVE TREATMENTS, we generally recommend things like PT, weight loss through diet and exercise, braces, or local injections. No doctor is excited to jump to the biggest gun in the drawer. I can personally say that in medical school, we are taught a method based approach to treating diseases starting with the lowest level intervention first. As a side note, a lot of insurance companies won't cover medications or surgeries without failure of conservative treatments first. Sorry, for the long rant, but damn this talking point really pissed me off.

Maybe the standard in which Dr's do things have changed. I went to over 10 Dr's this year. So many wanted to diagnose me with anxiety and fibromyalgia. I got so many prescriptions luckily I never took it. I eventually went to a chiropractor after going to a neurologist and the chiropractor figured it out. You are probably one of the good ones but I was really frustrated with my experience this year.

@@darkarchonisme Depending on where they live, I can see that happening simply because the 10 Doctors were a mix of inept, arrogant and overworked. In rural Canada, where I live, it's not uncommon for serious conditions to go undiagnosed because the only doctors in the area are 80 years old and suffering from dementia or overworked young doctors that ignore their patients until they end up in the ER. Sorry for the rant, but regardless of how crazy chiropractic practices are, they're nowhere near as dangerous as actual medical doctors that prevent people from getting proper care.

As someone who works at a company that hires for entry level positions based primarily on the fact that you have a 4 year degree in basically anything, I can say she's full of shit. Yeah but socialized medicine will also come with rules and exceptions that might include his under age child. I think if puberty blockers and hormone treatment have multiple long term harmful effects on kids why not wait until adulthood. We have laws against tattoos for kids under 18 and these are far more harmful and invasive. Add to it the monitory incentive because it involved a life time of follow ups and you see why it’s being pushed. I’m for universal healthcare but there should be limits to elective, cosmetic surgery. Even Europe requires you to get a diagnose from a real doctor showing you have a mental disorder before you get approved for the surgery.

As a person who is obese and has had diagnosed high blood pressure for 15 years I have never been to a doctor who said "oh, everything is fine. Just take this pill." Literally every single doctor I've ever had has said something along the lines of "hypertension is caused by a combination of genetic predisposition and how you treat your body. You are obese, which is likely the primary driver of this hypertension. You need to get your diet and weight under control. You can take this pill in the meantime, because all of the time spent with high blood pressure is slowly damaging your arteries, but the root cause of this disease is your lifestyle"

Same here! I have multiple chronic pain conditions, which means I'm on a lot of medications sure, but my doctor also supports me taking some supplements as long as I discuss it with him first. My urologist has even recommended some supplements to me. I'm also always told about the importance of exercise, physical therapy, eating right. Sure, my doctor isn't going to give me a detailed diet plan to follow, but they can refer me to a nutritionist if needed and can at least give me the basic run-down of basic stuff to eat and avoid.

And the overwhelming majority of people once they become obese never get back to a healthy weight across their lives. Our infrastructure is really sh'tty for helping people off of or just preventing the issue from developing. It isn't just a simple "why not do it?" No one wants to be overweight, it just takes herculean effort to get back to and maintain a healthy body weight. People should do it, but it isn't simple.

That being said, just about every white collar job the last 2 decades requires "4 year degree or equivalent work in related field" so literally the paper of the degree is more valuable than what you learn in those classes. I'm a guy who got a 4 year degree in business economics then became a Database developer and got a second 4 year degree after working as that database developer (employer paid for the second degree) for 7 years. Job experience is way more important to employers than your degree if you've been working for any amount of time. But there is no doubt that a degree is a way more approachable and sensible path to starting a career than finding a business who will take a risk on a high school graduate and let them work a job in a field they have no experience in (or just exploit you by getting you to do a job that typically requires a degree and just pay you 20k less)

All careers have marketing involved. I'm a mechanical engineer, but your advancement and impact are directly correlated to your ability to market your ideas and yourself. A person can be an amazing individual contributor, but they're going to be very slow to get promotions and raises if you struggle to get others onboard with your ideas or sell yourself as a person who can fulfill those high impact positions.

I work in the medical device industry as a engineer. Every design conversion we have loops back to how could this feature improve outcomes for patients, usability for users, decrease or mitigate risk, etc. We do tons of validation testing, have very strict quality controls, and much slower release cycles because of the FDA. We can’t make marketing claims unless we have data to back it up and neither can our competitors. Everyone I’ve worked with takes patient safety extremely seriously on an individual, design, and process level. I think the industry selects for people like this, but I think having a regulatory body looking over shoulders is a good thing.

I’m so sick of sneako and others lying about how expensive school is. The average graduate is leaving school with $30K in debt. Obviously, that’s too much, but it’s a far cry from $50K a year. And if you are strategic, you can leave school with less debt (community college for the first two years, going to a less prestigious college, etc). I found out I was good at wiring and shit and got a job at Siemens making more than people with full degrees. You dont have to get a degree at college to find direction from it. She says a lot of different things here but I think the only things she actually believes are that a degree “is just a piece of paper” and schools are just for liberal indoctrination and every other opinion is downstream of that. And then she throws in a lot of anecdotes to support it and only engages with the actual facts destiny gives in a dismissive hypothetical way, like when she says stuff among the lines of “oh college might be good for specialized fields”, whatever that means. Its all very infuriating to listen to but I think it highlights the mentality of somebody who can’t waver from their opinion that college is a scam. But its a little confusing when she says it. If you work a manual labor job it makes sense that the only people you know in your life didn’t make use of their college degrees. @@az2man it doesn't really take experience or a degree to work as an insurance salesman. you just have to pass an exam and they start you at $11/hr, you move up based on your success and can boost your pay with commission. no offense but the idea that you would need specialized education to do it is kind of hilarious to me as i've worked the job before. i think destiny may have only researched 20 minutes in google and made a bunch of inferences because he went up against someone with a loose narrative. ive also worked in customer service jobs with basically zero experience where ~40% of the people in my training class have a 4 year degree. the sentiment that college is a racket has been around for decades, but it has nothing to do with marxism. it's moreso the idea that you're told the piece of paper is a free ticket to a job, so you can go through any program and there will be a median salary waiting for you. then you have destiny with zero experience or a degree talking to someone from an MSM outlet and making 6 figs. you can say the degree helps bolster your resume, but the compensation you're getting with certain types of education does not match what you spent on it and it can take a really long time to get out of the debt.

I used to be on the "college is useless these days" train but I've recently moved from there to realizing that the entry level job market is actually where the problem lies. I have a college degree, and I'm glad I do however finding entry level work has been SIGNIFICANTLY harder than i was told it would be. Over the past 3 years I've applied to about 200 entry Level jobs in my area of study and have gotten one interview in that span of time and was ghosted by the company that interviewed me after follow ups. I don't think college is the problem, it's the job market. But everywhere you look people will tell you the entry level job market is flourishing. Bullshit.

I had the same problem years ago. Couldn't get an entry level job let alone a management job at a local video store I was overqualified for, so decided to go back to school for more skills. I immediately applied for an internship in tech. I still work for that company and have become more successful than I could've imagined. Management is impressed by the degrees, but admit I only needed one. Coworkers without degrees are nearly always of the first to be cut and don't get the best raises.

She talked about “no practical skills” outside of knowing how to think and talk. This is actually true in my STEM job too. When I hire, I’m not always looking for someone who can contribute on day one because they’re already familiar with all our software. Im looking for someone who has general intelligence with a base understanding of fundamental concepts. Stuff you can and do develop in college. If you also became a matlab/excel guru, that’s great too. But I can teach a new hire that stuff MUCH faster than I can teach statistical inference or something.

As someone who is going back to college at 32, Destiny is 100% correct about a degree becoming more and more of a requirement (even for jobs that don’t NEED a degree). Anyone who says otherwise hasn’t been in the traditional work force in a long time. Even for places that don’t require a college degree you have to be so head and shoulders (either with previous experience or by your performance in the interview) above the rest in order to land a half decent job. Do I agree that more people should consider working in the trades? Yes. Do I think that even with a degree that some of the additional experience requirements are a bit insane? Yes. I shouldn’t need 6 years of experience and a degree for an entry level position. Do I think college is for everyone? No, but pretending like it isn’t a huge factor in making more money is asinine.

I read an article about high school teachers and the main thing they wanted the parents of their students to teach their children is that they need to start thinking independently in high school you don't start thinking independently in college that's stupid. Middle school is where you find out who you like and you see what groups of people you mesh well with. If you are only starting to think for yourself in college that's a problem because That means you didn't learn anything or won't taught anything when it comes to being independent in high school and thinking for yourself and not subscribing to certain ideologies or trends and peer pressure and stuff like that.

When she said “it was a late stage diagnosis” regarding Lyme disease and doesn’t go into why it took so long, which doctors prescribed what, without knowing if she’d been bitten by a tick, or the 50 different reasons she was feeling the way she was. There’s testing for antibodies in blood regarding Lyme disease, but I suspect Jedediah wasn’t being truthful as to why it took so long, and the rationale for each doctor prescribing what they did. My biggest problem with debating any conservative is their incessant "that's not happening." This particular conversation it happened at the 29:00 mark. Every doctor me or my immediate family has visited always talk about what is actually causing ailments (ie: inactivity, too much sleep, not enough water etc). Excellent post for those in the real world and understand how doctors, nurse practitioners, and those in the medical profession deal on a case by case basis, and can only go with the facts given to them. It’s embarrassing((or should be) that this Jedediah woman would talk about her case, which is anecdotal, when millions of cases are brought in daily, from primary doctors, specialists, to hospital internists, to our emergency services. As someone poor, and doesnt have good medical DR, if my blood pressure was high during a first time checkup with a PCP I was told to get a prescription for high blood pressure, even tho I told them I have white coat hypertension always, as soon as I get home it goes down... So your experience isnt universal either. Dr's do reach for pills, they need to release a certain amount of scripts in order to make certain amounts of money. @@Hooga89 one piece of personal experience is not be suitable for making mass prescriptions. example: my friend lost their arm in car accident because they were waring their seatbelt, therefore i think no one should wear their seatbelt even tho data says on average it is much safer. im not arguing that liberal arts degrees are good or useful but her method of argumentation is very poor for actually convincing me at least. if her goal is to persuade people from going to college she should back it up with data that isnt just "it didn't work for me".

I love Destiny's approach, and I think there's one argument that's missing from his arsenal that would be very effective. Conservatives like this lady love to talk how they don't think gov is a perfect and all powerful god, and they point out problems they have with how American gov is right now. The thing they should understand is that government is meant to be run by the representatives of the people. So when she says "the community should organize and help" you answer with "yes, and they most effective, optimal way with measurably better outcomes is through the government". The government sucks? Yeah, cause it's reflecting how WE suck. Limiting government won't help the community suck less, but it will effectively rob a lot of people, and poorer communities from whatever agency they had left.
