Does Rem think that these Natives found some land and just sat on it for a millennia and that’s the largest extent of their culture? Does food, art, clothing, navigation, music, mythologies/legends, ceremonies, diplomatic traditions, and their traditional laws not count? Or were those just minuscule contributions? Also, I reject this idea that we should respect land ownership based on who has traditional claims. If the Jews and Muslims in Israel and Palestine want to fight over that shit, that’s their business. But that’s a toxic shitshow I don’t feel comfortable emulating.
@Kyle_Schaff4 жыл бұрын
@@homelessengineer5498 I hope you have a good idea of different Native tribes' values and cultures because I will grill the fuck out of you if you don't. Rem doesn't talk about it because he's clueless, but one of the most important cultural aspects of the Iroquois's tribes is their unification myth. From that myth, we learn that things like their composing tribes' different headbands, beaded jewelry as symbolic gifts used for diplomacy, and their traditions passed down from the Great Law of Peace play integral parts in their culture. And that's just a small part of the importance of their unification myth. Sure, the land has meaning as it does to any group of people, but pretending that a people's culture is at all contingent on the exact land they hold like Rem believes is ridiculous. I wrote like three paragraphs arguing against your Chinese conquest bit before realizing I was writing something you probably wouldn't read and, more importantly, it was getting off-track from what is relevant. If you really want to have that argument, I'll rewrite it. And your last paragraph is where I can tell that you don't really care about the conversation. Destiny literally said the opposite in the last debate. He said he wants to get rid of the reservation system and bring Natives fully into the fold of United States citizens and take care of them as we do for every other citizen. I don't know if you're aware, but the reservation system is fucking awful. Native's usage of illicit drugs is at the highest rate of any other race in the country, the rate of binge-drinking is 23.5%, tobacco smoking is at 40.1%, all the associated health risks from smoking, drinking, and hard drugs are at much greater rates (especially on reservations where their healthcare system is horrendous), mental health problems are flatly untreated, suicide rates are incredibly high (acutely in the 10-34 age category), they don't even have proper fucking home addresses, the poverty rate on reservations is more than twice that of the national average (28.4% vs. 12.7%), etc. Destiny said that he wants to bring Natives in to help address these problems that afflict their communities. He believes in our ideal of being a cultural melting pot, said he has love for all people, and doesn't think that the system of reservations is working for anyone here.

The Canadian government already tried what Destiny is proposing in the form of a 1969 White Paper titled "Statement of the Government of Canada on Indian Policy" and it was rejected by Indigenous communities. Minister of Indian Affairs (and future PM), Jean Cretein's idea was to abolish the status of "Indian" and make them politically equal to any other Canadian under the Just Society doctrine of the Trudeau government. Indians rejected this because it ignored the historical grievances over land rights, represented another step of cultural genocide through coerced assimilation into "White society", and shirked the responsibility to uphold the Crown's treaty obligations by downloading them onto the provinces. As well, the utilitarian argument for land use is exactly the kind of thinking that created the Oka Crisis in the 1980s. A golf course in Oka, Quebec thought that they could increase utility by expanding the course into Mohawk territory as they weren't 'using it' so to speak. This sparked tense protests and armed standoffs between Mohawks and soldiers. The project of reconciliation requires a change in direction away from this kind of thinking, even if it means that economic development is limited. Otherwise we are contributing to a historical injustice that not even God could forgive.
@thedukeofdukers4 жыл бұрын
@@killerskiely100 I don't think he's a prick, but I do think he ignores history and puts immediate material interests of the most economically developed regions before any consideration of the conditions of a peoples' existence along the periphery. Somewhat disturbingly, similar arguments were presented to German society to justify the annexation of Eastern Europe under the Lebensraum expansionary doctrine. To invoke Godwin's Law: "There is only one task: Germanization through the introduction of Germans [to the area] and to treat the original inhabitants like Indians. … I intend to stay this course with ice-cold determination. I feel myself to be the executor of the will of History. What people think of me at present is all of no consequence. Never have I heard a German who has bread to eat express concern that the ground where the grain was grown had to be conquered by the sword. We eat Canadian wheat and never think of the Indians." (Minutes of Hitler Conference, 17 October 1941 reproduced in Czesław Madajczyk, ed., Generalny Plan Wschodni: Zbiór dokumentów (Warszawa: Glówna Komisja Badania Zbrodni Hitlerowskich w Polsce, 1990). I want to make clear that I am not accusing Destiny of being a national socialist, but the logic he employs would have us agreeing with Hitler in regards to the above passage. Canadian oil and natural gas is exported without a thought given to the decimation of a self-determining nation by its consumers. Its not perfectly analogous, as the Canadian government gives more regard to the well-being of the Wet'suwet'en nation than Hitler ever gave to the peoples he conquered, but the reminiscence should be strikingly obvious, and should give cause for second thought to the principles we invoke to justify mass-scale industrial development.

@mario1671004 жыл бұрын
Actually I am a bit interested. How does land play into Native American culture?
@ProphTart4 жыл бұрын
@@mario167100 oral tradition is a huge part of indigenous culture, it's part of why elders are so highly regarded. When you grow up in a certain area you form a "spiritual" connection with the land around you through a deep understanding of the biology, ecosystems and cycles of the area. You are then able to pass your wisdom on to your children and their children. This is of course very generalized as individual groups believe variations of this but a consistent theme across them is the importance of the earth and the land around them.
@ProphTart4 жыл бұрын
@usucdik apples to oranges. Imagine a group of thousands of christians being sent to an islamic region and forced to give up practicing christianity so that a pipeline could be built in one specific spot. It's economic vs. existential. There's also a huge debate in Canada around the necessity of the pipeline in general adding complexity to the situation. Many think the pipeline is entirely unnecessary so imagine the above scenario happening when it didn't even really benefit the whole.
@oppie23634 жыл бұрын
@@ProphTart Just wanna say two things: 1) I agree with pretty much everything you wrote above - Rem's conclusions are generally right here, but he's a pretty poor advocate for this particular cause. It doesn't help the situation that not only is he not that well-informed here, he *pretends* like he is and thus walks into very dumb claims (e.g. "most indigenous people lived in the far North" or whatever). 2) The fact that this particular issue is about a pipeline which many Canadians are opposed to needed a lot more attention than it got here. On the one hand, destiny's claims about "what's good for the huuuuuge number of Canadians" kinda goes out the window if, say, 49% of Canadians are opposed to it. On the other, there are a whole lot of white Canadian environmentalists who suddenly seem very interested in "indigenous rights" because this is about a pipeline - I suspect a lot of this crowd wouldn't be beating the drum for native sovereignty quite so loudly if this was a dispute where the Wet'suwet'en were overfishing salmon or claiming that hunting baby penguins was part of their ancestral culture.

It is a rather aggressive, but effective way of testing whether a statement or moral prescription generally holds water.

Rem is so terribly bad at explaining the difference between the band governments and the traditonal authorities and what they have authority over. Destiny seems to think that the democratically elected band government (singular) has authority over all the land which doesnt seem to be the case To my understanding the band governments have authority over a particular community made up of reservations and are voted in by the people of that 'nation' who are connected to those particular reservations and many or most indigenous peoples will have multiple bands and thus multiple 'nations' forming a larger whole. Meanwhile the traditonal authorities represent the people as a whole (including members of the indigenous community that arent classified as "status indians" by the Indian Act for various reasons) and have authority of the entire traditional territory outside of the reservations which they have a legal right to under canadian law. So in the case of the wetsuwetin they have at least 6 different band governments that each control various reservations within their traditional territory while the rest of the land is under the authority of the 13 hereditary chiefs as the recognised authority of the wetsuwetin as a whole. 5 of the 6 band governments signed off on the pipeline while the traditonal authorities who control the land outside of the reservations did not, and the pipeline runs through the land of both groups. It would seem pretty clear cut then that since the company didnt get the consent of the traditonal authorities to run the pipeline through the land that is under their authority that the building in these lands would be illegal

Vaush exploited the labor of Destiny in this debate by privately owning his youtube channel. A true Capitalist.

Okay... but Destiny kinda got destroyed in this debate... Just keeping it real, Rem is annoying but he wasn't wrong.

What does being right or wrong have to do with winning a debate?
@Alchemist13304 жыл бұрын
Meks K well destiny got “destroyed” because he was wrong AND lost the debate, he came off even less likable than Rem here. Now that a whole other level of losing, just being honest.

@@Alchemist1330 well in my view I think destiny was wrong, I think he did a better job of defending his 'definitely wrong' position, and I think rem did bad job of defending his 'actually correct' position.
