Interesting video! Since I work in lab safety, there are two explosive chemicals I discuss regularly. Picric acid (trinitrophenol) is used in many biological stains / fixatives, and we normally handle it wet. There's a fair bit of controversy on just how dangerous / sensitive dried picric acid is, and the salts with metals like iron are supposedly touch explosives. That could be an awesome video, with science and explosions. Ether peroxides might be harder to demonstrate, but it's an issue for labs all over the world.Stuff like diethyl ether and THF gradually make peroxides (which apparently are extremely sensitive). Having a video showing just how dangerous old ether can get could be really interesting, in a fireball kind of way.

I've got a buch of experience with picric acid and picrate salts. TNP itself isn't going to accidentally detonate, and is actually hard to kick off on purpose while doing hammer impact tests. The picrate salts are more sensitive but I wouldn't classify them as "touch explosives". The problems arise when TNP accidentally cones in contact with metals like in an old rusted lid on decades old storage bottles or lead pipes where a lot of TNP is being stored. The lead pipe example is how the sensitivity of lead picrate was accidentally discovered back when TNP was used to dye silk. Massive industrial accident because of it. I somewhat understand the caution used when old dry TNP is discovered in a lab and disposed of because you don't know if it's been exposed to metals, but it usually gets blown out of proportion by the media.

In court, he who has the biggest lawyer and budget wins, so tread carefully. Before things loosened up, the BATshite people nailed two guys who sold parts from which a suppressor could be made. They were very careful to not associate with each other and never described their wares in a way related to firearms. Their outlet was gun shows where their tables were not together, one selling shaped metal discs and the other selling threaded metal tubes. If asked both would say they didn't know what they could be used for and that they didn't know the other guy. Now what each of them sold was in itself totally legal, but together you got something which wasn't. After about a year they got busted and the charges stuck based on them going to the same gun shows. The guberment will twist and turn things into what they want, and unless your lawyer is bigger than them (which few are) then be careful because they will find a way to screw you, legal or not.
@wadewilson524 Жыл бұрын
I’m all for supressors being legal and have no love for the ATF, but that wasn’t much of a twist and turn on the government’s part. It’s not like these two “strangers” were “independently” always showing up at bake sales together

We are not gonna get into how easily it is to make without gasoline or with just regular household products such as soap. Like i am not talking about having the gel in a glass jar sealing it with a fuse then lighting the fuse or breaking the fuse to ignite it as it is a bomb then that spread glass and flaming napalm everywhere which then can quickly lead to carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide gas buildup. Though if ya wanna make it into a bomb with a break fuse use a very strong container and not a glass jar as it gives ya more time to get away from it as trust me you don't want flaming napalm or flying glass anywhere near you

The storage for explosives is exceedingly expensive and rigorous, but I do not plan to ever store explosives; rather I plan to manufacture and detonate on the same day/location. You guys have already gone through all this paperwork, so I am wondering: is it possible that I may be able to acquire an FEL for manufacturing and usage without having any form of 'explosive storage'? I hope to try out all classes of explosives on small scales, if I manufacture on-site and detonate would I still be required to invest in storage? I love your videos and I want to legally try out some of your experiments :D
@OrdnanceLab Жыл бұрын
We aren't lawyers, so take this advice as simply advice. The FEL is advisable to avoid legal issues, but not required if you are not making explosives for storage or commercial use. Federally, you can make explosives for personal use. Your local laws might differ. If you make energetics and destroy them the same day for non-commercial reasons, then an FEL is technically not needed. Having an FEL does help as a CYA layer. It really depends on how serious you wish to go, do you plan on doing this for commercial reasons, and your local laws.

Yeah, you are wrong about the pneumatic part. A pneumatic "cannon" is only considered a destructive device if you are using it as one. Otherwise things large bore air rifles would be illegal without registering them. For that matter a paintball gun would be a destructive device as most of them are .68 caliber.

Air powered stuff is not covered by the NFA.
@thatoneguy454c7 ай бұрын
@@lrmackmcbride7498 It depends on what you are using it for. If you use a potato gun to knock a hole in someone's car, they will charge you with a destructive device, but of course that is a very specific situation
@lrmackmcbride74987 ай бұрын
@@thatoneguy454c if it is pneumatic it still wouldn't be a destructive device because compressed air doesn't meet the 'explosive or propellant' definition. It would just be a deadly weapon which is a separate code section and would usually fall under state law. I had to ask a lawyer to get clarification.

The fact that you just claimed a legit consumer product could be determined to be a destructive device shows how poorly written all the rules are with the atf. They can determine that someone with the means to make something has something…. Thats a really dangerous precedent.

Sorry I'm late. So without legal advice can a straight civilian, no SOT, no FFL, ect. Create and dispose of a DD within the 24hr period without a form 1?

I would love love love to have a case of M67 grenades for a man-cave. It's an incredibly stupid idea, but I've been called an incredibly stupid man by someone I live with, so.... I wonder if that means it's possible to own an M67 grenade so long as it's properly registered as a destructive device as well as an explosive device (and pay the $$$ to locate and purchase one)? Does that mean someone like me, who could accurately be described as having not legitimate reasons for owning a grenade, be legally able to own one should I pay the fees/taxes and jump through the necessary hurdles?

Pneumatic canon is not legal? Or did I not hear you correctly? Also there are 72, 58, and .510 air rifles as well as some air shotguns, all currently exempted.

If it uses compressed air, it is not covered by the nfa.

I find that portraying the ATF and the National Firearms Act as the fun police with its laws for Destructive Devices is disingenuous. There are numerous federal and state laws that expand or are entirely independent from the NFA on Destructive Devices, and they are largely enforced by local and state law enforcement, not solely by the ATF.
