This podcast is a boon for gay men. I wish I had something like this growing up. But I am happy that a gay kid in some corner of the world has access to this....this will help him/her make sense of this thing called life.

Thanks guys! I watched this episode yesterday and, immediately, today the universe presented me with a situation that needed me to be emotionally resilient. I was reprimanded for some omissions I had done in my work, and it felt awful that I pissed off people. But, to my rescue I remembered the words you all shared in this video! I'm owning up to my mistake and not using it to tear myself down. I'll keep this video in mind and rewatch it whenever I need to be resilient.

So thought provoking, as always. I’m 59, in the UK. So many of my contemporaries, back in the 80s and 90s, chose a cowards way out, married a woman to blend in. Then years (decades) later everything fell apart. I suppose my anger at unfairness somehow made me stronger, I didn’t follow their route, plus an inner conviction that despite a total lack of role models I knew homophobia was societies problem, not mine. This strength comes at a cost, though…

Using your "adversity as your curriculum" is very good advice.

We run from adversity but that is the only thing that teaches us

Great recommendations! Struggles are just part of everyone’s life, and even if we avoid a few, unexpected ones are always just around the corner. So we better keep a good attitude, learn from them, and definitely become stronger!

I absolutely hated sitting at holiday dinners with my hetero siblings and their wives and girlfriends and I am not accepted for being gay. I wasn't strong enough. Even still, I am learning resilience.

I always look forward to your weekly podcasts and getting to spend time with all of you. It really feels like I'm sitting with friends in a living room (I don't actually currently have). You guys supply me with the love and warmth of 'home'. (this is Robin Crutchfield. I just recently got to meet Michael).

I like Matt's notion of a persistence/surrender dichotomy, when talking about resilience. I can identify with this, as I negotiate the waxing and waning of my OCD obsession ruminations, or numbing, as Matt mentions, especially as I have gotten older. I think of this in terms of a parallel to the idea that God never gives us more than we can handle; what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Thank you for sharing this insight-it’s powerful to see how you relate Matt’s persistence/surrender balance to navigating your own challenges with resilience. ❤

I can’t keep up with so many thoughts. Reno thinks very differently from this stoic, so the learning is vast.
