Schools are doing that because parents have lost it entirely. I see so many kids around these days who either cant speak their mother tongue or will feel ashamed and its all because of parents. I do not care! If I am eating Imdian food I will eat with hands! I absolutely do not care where I am sitting. At airports and such I generally don't eat the food there because it is too expensive for very tasteless food. I will not eat food without hands but there are exceptions like if it is not hygienic for me to eat with hands, like at places without any handwash area. I do not want yo put hand sanitizers and eat food as I don't like the taste of sanitizer mixed food. But for this I had to grow up a bit. I remember when I was in school, once I went with my grandmother to KFC and she was eating the burger. It was so amusing to me to see her eat the burger like roti sabji. I was having fun until some people sitting there gave dirty looks, and then suddenly I got conscious and asked my gran to eat normally 😭😭 I regret that till this day! So now to honor her and myself I eat only with bare hands, no utensils!

That's why u have to use restaurant grade disposable gloves ..... Govt of India had a campaign and advertisement about using soap to wash hands ... Why did u think they showed us that ... Cause people were getting sick and having diarrhea ..... Cross contamination is more while using hands and can be drastically reduced by using cutlery .... Every cuisine in the world is well suited for using gloves and cutlery

Using implements for food eating is not really just a "western" thing. Many Asian countries use implements like chopsticks and spoons have be used by many cultures. There are many foods you cant eat without a tool, like soups. Even westerners use hands for some foods like pizza, sandwiches, fries etc.

@@mrnrnh8 I agree, Millions of Indians live without running water or bathrooms so personal hygiene is not easy. Although, I dont think its "anti-Indian" to have standards of cleanliness. Most foreign visitors to India get food poisoning within a few days, even if you only eat at expensive hotels. This is mainly because of unclean water and a lack of sanitation. Even many Indian children still die from waterborne disease, so Indians deserve better health standards too. Japan is very Japanese but they have high standards for cleanliness and everything, even higher than the west in some cases.

I've experienced the same many times and our elderly parents have started feeling that they don't belong to this society or country, this is so sad and my heart is shattered just thinking how they have felt like insulted and ashamed at the same time. There are better aspects of Culture, eating with hands is not culture. It's just that we did not invent anything. It's messy for our food especially rice based. With our population, if everyone eats rice with hands and lines up to wash hands, it's messy. The sink is also dirty. Image in a flight if people eat rice and gravy with hands. Guys, I lived and worked in abroad (USA and Canada) for 6 years and I always ate with my hands even in fancy restaurants, I was never judged and in fact many westerners came and asked me interesting questions out of curiosity, none of them displayed arrogance. This experience shall teach all of us that every person on this planet has equal right and freedom to choose and follow traditions of his own and liking, yet others do not have a right to poke in your matter. Unfortunately, in India, our own Indians are making fool out of themselves. I live in West Bengal,and I recently noticed in social media that some young age people were drunk,playing holi inside the metro and were recording reels.I was extremely shocked to encounter this.The government can allow all these things but they still don't allow some normal Indian citizens to enter public places like metroes,restaurants.Even though they allow,they look down upon some citizens. Those that don't have a handwash or wash basin give finger-bowl at the end of our eating. While there should not be any problem using the hands, one should also not be rigid to learn / follow certain basic etiquette. Moving up the societal ladder surely comes with certain tags / side frills and this surely should have nothing to do with our culture and customs.

I am not against modern look but feel comfortable in traditional attire. I had been to 10 different countries and lived there. I tried once eating noodles and rice using hand, it is so uncomfortable the hand feels weird and sticky. Only for dry and fried food like burger pizza, it feels OK. I don't think it's the same for everyone. If you want your culture to be respected, you have to respect not using hand as well. None is better than the other. It's about habit.
