I don't understand how Universities or Colleges can one day decide to invest into something, and then suddenly all the _students_ are _REQUIRED_ to then pay for or financially subsidise it. And if, as a student, you refuse to hand over the extra money or buy the "thing" - like the meals guy at 12:20 - then you can be punished in some way for it. To me, that's you being entered into a contract, but you were never asked permission to be entered into it OR asked for a signature to make it binding. How is it legal for them to do this?? Is there some sort of contract during the Uni application process that you sign that makes it so any new 'contracts' they make you have automatically agreed to and signed?? And how is _that_ legal either??
@panda999999999999 ай бұрын
Post secondary education in the US is basically the wild west. Aside from laws protecting pregnant women, there's basically no legal standards colleges are held to; no standards for education quality, or price regulation. The contracts colleges make you sign are predatory in and of themselves, but this is just a more direct version of the cost being passed off to the customer, but in this case the college knows that unless you wanna apply to another college, pay to transfer credits, and then retake some courses you've already taken (thus paying more money for tuition at the new college), your degree is basically held hostage and you're stuck. Most people I met in college had a 'get in, get the fuck out' mentality when it came to college primarily due to the above.
@DavidStruveDesigns9 ай бұрын
@@panda99999999999 Well damn. And on top of all that you end up in double-digit thousands in debt. I often wonder exactly where that tuition money _actually_ goes and what it's _actually_ spent on, because it's clearly not the course you take since you have to buy all your books and other course materials yourself, the Uni or College rarely needs their running costs paid for since they all seem to have outside donors and rich benefactors. Honestly, I used to really regret not going to University or some more "upmarket" College, but the more I hear about them the more I'm glad I missed out on that particular bit of "fun".
@Purpl3Pe4ch9 ай бұрын
My first college did something similar for an unknown reason. When I started, commuters didn't have to sign up for a meal plan. The next year, for students starting that year or later, the school forced commuters to purchase the commuter meal plan. All of us- even those like me who didn't have to sign up- thought it was unreasonable and unnecessary. Who said we were always going to eat campus food, if we ate it at all? Waste of money for those who wouldn’t use it much.

I used to work at a distribution center in the late shift (from 13:00 to 21:18). I was responsible for loading the trucks with the packages the packaging team made during the shift. Best case scenario the last packages were ready around 21:15, and came off the belt by 21:20, at which point I still had to sort them on pallets by carrier, scan them, wrap and weigh those pallets, fill in the freight forms and load the pallets on the different trucks per carrier. So, on a normal day, I clocked out somewhere between 21:45 and 22:00, together with my TL we were always the last ones to leave the building. One day it was really calm and the last packages came off the belt around 20:45. So for the first time in 3 years I was done by 21:15 and I head off to clock out. As usual, there are around 30 people already waiting to clock out. When the clock turns 21:18, nobody moved an inch. I assumed nobody noticed yet, since everyone was talking with each other. So I take my badge and clock out. At that moment a couple of people gasped (and some laughed) and told me "You clocked too soon! The time on the clock is off by 30 seconds, you should wait till 21:19 just to be safe. You just lost 30 minutes of pay!". Apparently, everybody knew, except for me, who had never been this early at the clock. The next day I came in and checked our timekeeping software, and indeed, HR already deducted 30 minutes from my work time and "clocked" me out at 20:48. I talked to my supervisor who confirmed that's normal, but he told me he'd do his best to make things right for me. A few hours later he told me he updated my clock time from the day earlier to 21:18. During lunch break I checked the software, and indeed, my clock out time was updated to 21:18. However, the next day I came in and saw HR changed it again to 20:48. I again talked to my SV, who said he had a discussion with HR but couldn't do anything about it, the decision was final. I went to HR myself to talk about the issue, and was told "you're supposed to work till 21:18, if you leave your station at 21:18, you'll never be early at the clock". So from then on, I did exactly that. I made sure trucks were loaded by 21:18 and left the remaining boxes on the belt to ship out the next day. After a few days my SV came to talk to me and knew very well why I was leaving packages on the belt, but he asked if I could please "understand and forget" what happened, and if I could still make sure everything that was packed would get shipped, since the customers get a notice their package will arrive the day after they are marked as "packed" (instead of the day after they were marked as "shipped"). I explained I wouldn't be doing that anymore, and that I'll never be doing overtime again, not even a minute. "HR told me I have to work till 21:18, so I'll do exactly that". It took a few weeks, but suddenly they decided packaging had to stop processing orders at 20:45 to make sure every packed order was shipped the same evening. Thus, instead of giving me my 30 minutes of pay, they now had 10-15 packers doing nothing from 20:45 till 21:18, every. single. day. I eventually left a few months later because of something else HR screwed me over with...
