Doakes has called Dexter by his first name before. In the first episode when he asks Dexter for an analysis he says “You give me the fucking creeps, you know that Dexter?”
@itsreapernecrosis22154 ай бұрын
Definetley not mutual respect. Dexter even talks about it when they first start talking with Doakes in the cage, calling him out saying "I know what you're doing." Referring to his army Ranger training, in which Doakes definetley would have gone through SERE, maybe some other trainjng, and utilized that training to try to empathize with Dexter. In hopes of course to exploit a hole in Dexter's morals and emotions. The best way to do that would be to play devils advocate, sympathize, brush up his character by telling him he's better than this, that he knows deep down he doesn't want to keep doing what he's doing, and that he knows the right thing to do would be to turn himself in and to let him go. Dexter isn't fazed by this stuff to the point of turning himself in, because he knows what hes doing, UNTIL Doakes brings up his father, and he learns that his father really died because of him which shakes his code and the principals he lives his life off of. It takes Doakes a minute but you can see he starts to realize that it's a weakness to exploit and he utilizes it to coax Dexter to his side. Dexter probably knew that the entire time, but I think he really was just using Doakes as a conduit to express his thoughts, more than really sympathizing with him and them getting buddy buddy. In essence they're both appealing to eachother for a sense of self subservience, Doakes for his survival, and Dexter scrambling to find his sense of self.
@Twonine29904 ай бұрын
The part where Doakes said “ Dexter” , instead of Morgan, and he returned it by saying James, it felt emotional, it felt like they had mutual respect towards each other despite everything.

I think the writers were actually trying to show that deep down, both Dexter and doakes want each other. Doakes supporting Dexter would have ruined his character. Doakes is a soldier, someone who is no stranger to killing, yet he believes in the system and due process. Spoiler alert! Dexter turned himself in. He got multiple lifetimes in prison. Doakes was promoted. He took over from the retired Lundy. You can watch the spin-off show about him and his team hunting down serial killas called Surprise Mazafaka! Great show! Debra quit. Opened a bar together with Angel. The end.

So it would have been nice if Dexter was ready to turn himself in here and let Doakes free to arrest him as a means to an end, and they finally had a mutual respect for each other's codes, but then everything proceeded to go to shit because of Dexter's psycho ex. Dexter tries to save Doakes but it's too late and he dies anyways, and Dexter seeks out revenge for his rival friend's death. I think that would have made Doakes' farewell better here for me and better closure.

A lot of people say that Doakes needed to be around longer, and I disagree. He was from the start an ever increasing reminder that Dexter is not as slippery to everyone, as seems. It makes you realise that there are people out there who think independently and are basically kryptonite to Dexter's hiding in plain sight methods. The most notable time this happens next is Trinity, because just like with Doakes, he let his guard down. Think about it, yes being a involved with the police gives him a good cover. It makes it easier for him to access evidence, criminal history information for his code, and etc.. But it paints a giant target on him for anyone who is looking. That's actually what makes this whole series fun to watch. If he were just a serial killer, no one would really tune in as much, and the stakes would be hard to rip up and move on. for many reasons; As a operator for the police; 1. If he just disappeared, people would investigate. (eg. his orders of the knockout drug were as easy find if someone looked, ie. Masuka) 2. If he stops killing due to heat, that just increases the heat. 3. If he gets involved, people start asking why. 4. If he moves and killings like his happen elsewhere, it's quite the clue. From the beginning he's forced into a scenario which forces him to not only kill, but to keep going, the deeper he gets the deeper he falls, as with the risk of getting caught, the anty rises for him to break his code, leave clues impossible to fully cover, etc.. If he were just a roaming serial killer, getting away with things would be far easier, with his meticulous code. Just makes it harder for him to verify all the things he needs to verify. Basically Harry made sure he would be controlled, never fully free to enact his dark passenger. New Blood was an interesting way to sequel his story. And Resurrection I assume will have to take either a very similar direction, or a completely different one.

If only they'd saved the S2 plot a bit longer, it would've been a very satisfying ending just with Doakes bringing Dexter in to confess.

I wish, before Doakes died, Dexter got him to confess about his own 'dark passenger'. We know Doakes has taken vengeance on people he thought deserved to die, I just wanted Dexter to get Doakes to admit that they're not all that different, that Doakes also feels a perverse sense of justice when he kills someone who fits his own code. And on that account I have to wonder why Dexter didn't become a cop himself, he has the skills and it would allow him to kill without having to hide bodies in garbage bags.

They were both killers, but in different ways. Doakes hated when killers got off just as much as Dexter. It only made sense to have them pair up and Doakes keeps clear of Dexter and every so often gives him "cases" to work on. Doakes was such a good character and shouldn't have been killed off.

What I wish would have happened is that Dexter finds out that Sergeant doakes is corrupt, like he plants evidence or does crazy things to get criminals put in jail and they come to a mutual understanding that they are both trying to do the same thing and are both guilty, so they end up having to let the others crime slide, and maybe even pair up together to cover each other's backs or kill together. It would have been great to see dokes know who Dexter really is, but have to keep up the charade of not liking him. They played off each other so well and it was sad to see him die by Lila of all people

Season 1, Season 4, Season 2, Season 3. That’s my current ranking anyways. People talk about Season 4, but there’s just something special about the first one. They’re all pretty close, S3 being a bit less but not absurdly so.
@siuchaos2606Ай бұрын
I was shocked when they killed off doakes so early, I expected him to keep suspecting Dexter and catching him in lies here and there, clearly they tried to make Quinn fill that role and being a bit of a pushback force against Dexter when Doakes was gone but it just didn't feel the same. Dexter is a frustrating show, there are bits of amazing ideas and sometimes they're executed well, but for every well executed idea there are like 20 nightmare plot holes. It really peaked with S2 and S4 honestly, the rest of the seasons don't really hold a candle compared to the rest of the seasons.

Doakes is very justice oriented as a reaction to the horrors he witnessed at war. And if ALL Dexter ever was was a vigilante, he might have been more willing to overlook it. But the ritualistic way Dexter does what he does... I mean, it's haunting just to see it from outside the screen, but irl it would be terrifying.

Doakes was traumatized when Dexter started cutting up the body So, nah, Doakes isn't on that level. Eliminating bad guys, wam, bam, done. No problem *Dexter* - let me take a moment... 💀 Doakes took no pleasure in the killing. Dexter revelied in it, releasing all his stresses and burdens

@@shawnbradford2243 Not really. He didn't seek them out and did what Dexter does. Even his friend on the boat he tries to talk him down and turn himself in after killing his wife.
