I remember binge watching Dexter, Suits and Breaking Bad during covid, and they all had the same thing in common, they all started out with a 3 season premise, but ended up becoming huge hits, and they all had to make adjustments to the shows to allow them to continue. The actor who played Dokes was a great actor, and was in fantastic shape. Unfortunately the “Will Dokes catch Dexter” or “Will Mike be found out” story lines could only last a couple seasons, and they had to make changes to keep moving forward. Breaking Bad kept Jessie when he was supposed to have been killed off, and brought in Gus Fring to advance the story.

Everyone always says Doakes was always right about Dexter. But truth is that both Dexter and Doakes were right about eachother, Dexter was actually less delusional about who he was than Doakes was about himself. They were both killers, Doakes thought he was more justified and clearly had an ego bigger than his own head. Dexter lied to everyone else but never to himself. Their final conversation, in unspoken words, was them finally finding a brief moment of respecting eachother. Doakes respected Dexter for wanting to turn himself and finally face the consequences. Dexter respected Doakes for doing his job and wanting to bring killers to justice. But the show couldn’t end there. It had 7 more seasons to go, so Lila had to step in and fuck things up

Doakes was a superb character. When he told LaGuerta about his instincts and what he has been through (and doing) he basically not only had a Dark Passenger himself like Dexter he himself was basically an untrained version of Dexter. It takes one to know essentially. Although the books version had worse fate than TV-Doakes. In the books is basically a broken stump who got so damaged by a killer that he isn't able to continue police duty.

In one scene (at about 14:30) where Doakes smiles. It's the same smile as Dexter. That got me noticing that a lot of the shots after that show Doakes as Dexter's mirror, or another self. The lighting, camera angles, and such were usually used only on Dexter.

@@dogstackz Doakes said "you give me the creeps" then Dexter glances back at the dozen or so blood splatter pics at his desk, implying they are the reason Doakes is creeped out. He's playing dumb. Of course it's Dexter's overall behavior that creeps Doakes out, but to someone else watching it gives them an explanation, "of course the blood guy seems creepy, but he's not actually a bad guy, it's just the blood pictures". People tend to avoid inconvenient truths if given the chance--they don't want one more problem to worry about. Doakes just has a better read on Dexter than his coworkers.

I find the fascinating dialogue when Doakes finds out about Dex, because it’s incredibly realistic to what the scene should be, rather than being dramatic and full of emotion. But it genuinely is what it should; Doakes allowing himself to express a bit of the overwhelm he is feeling without losing compuse, and Dexter just reacting to it without any emotion whatsoever, kind of on automatic pilot. “You said that.” “I’m happy for you”. Man, such anticlimactic answers, yet perfect for the situation. I love how well written this dialogue is.

Okay. Let's just separate the fact Dexter IS a weirdo and a serial killer. Doakes doesn't know that. But he's an HR nightmare. You can't call someone "A fucking weirdo" and other awful things multiple times a day, every day at work. Even if he's a good cop, he's a shitty person. And all the evidence points to him being the Bay Harbor Butcher......

As much as I love seasons 1-4, I'm still surprised that MPD believed so easly that Doakes is the Butcher, while Dexter wasn't deemed even a little suspicious by most of them. Dexter himself said that it surprises him that only Doakes gets a creepy feeling around him, but even that feeling aside, come on, Dexter is shady af 😅 As for Doakes, I would sooner believed, that he is a Punisher and goes around blowling up mob locals, not that he hunts down criminals, kills them and dispose their budies in style of the Butcher
