How does John listen to a thorough explanation of how the entire Ambisound to Tempest thing works directly from the source...and then proceeds to say things that contradict what Cerny has said? For example, John says that "it really is just taking the existing Tempest audio output and you have the extra height channels", but that's not correct, as Cerny explained - it's taking the existing *Ambisound* output and downmixing it into 7.1.4 *using* Tempest. I don't think Cerny said anything whether the 7.1 portion of the 7.1.4 output is actually identical (and it would make sense if it wasn't entirely identical), so I don't think it can be described as "taking the existing Tempest audio output". Same with John's claim that "the games themselves were built for headphones, basically", which also kinda contradicts Cerny's explanation, since clearly the Ambisound to Tempest processing is able to accomodate more output options and is not limited to *just* headphones, but more importantly is presented as fact, but is in fact mostly just John's personal opinion on how the audio is mastered, not supported by real facts. These might seem like inconsequential details to some, but accuracy is important.

"This isn't actually a Dolby Atmos Soundtrack". I reckon John thinks that means not being as good as? Tempest allows for a far greater amount of audio objects at a time, with more complex processing capabilities. If Mark Cerny added compatibility and use of the Dolby Atmos container it would actually be a downgrade.

@@xero1982 I'm getting kinda confused by your comment I'm afraid. Nothing John says here comes off to me as him thinking what Sony is doing is better than "true Atmos" (my words, for the sake of making a point, not his) would be, it feels like the exact opposite is true - that he is strongly suggesting this solution is not ideal and a "true Atmos" would have better results. But maybe I'm projecting my own bias into it, that is certainly always possible, no matter how objective we try to be. But then there's also your last sentence where it seems like you're describing the same thing they technically actually did, but you describe it as if they didn't, and then you call that option a downgrade...so, yeah, I'm kinda lost here, sorry.

@@xero1982 Yes, but that was my original point (well, one of them, anyway) as well ;) As in he essentially inserts his own misconceptions into what Cerny has said to suggest (again) that this is worse than a "true Atmos" would be. But maybe my point didn't come through as well as I thought it did. But I guess we are both essentially saying the same thing after all.

@@xero1982 the 3D ambisonic data created by Tempest and then rendered out to headphones, 7.1, 7.1.4, etc. has lower precision than the positional metadata created for true Dolby Atmos. The sounds are effectively emitted from 36 virtual speakers spaced evenly across a sphere, then down sampled, which is rather course. Atmos allows for 32 discrete objects placed arbitrarily around the listener, if you want more sounds they need to be bundled together into compound objects at the same position.

Absolutely love the discussion at the end! Please amplify with an ATMOS video! I'd love to see this get attention. When Xbox One X came out with Atmos, had pretty bad FOMO. After getting a Vizio 5.1.4 system, the lag was terrible! I thought maybe it was the tv or soundbar. Then I went top-tier Samsung 11.1.4 990b. Same issue! Plus, Samsung went with hdmi 2.0 for the bar, which means I have to use eARC if I want 120 fps! Infuriating. A video with PS5, XSX and Atmos setups direct/eARC/Shark with optimized settings (a la Bataglia) would be amazing! Thx!

The payed license is only related to headphones, because it's an audio codec that doesn't come in headphones, but even if you don't have that license you can use the Windows Sonic Audio alternative. It's not as good, but serves the exact same purpose for free. PS5 has tempest audio for free and XBOX and Windows 10/11 have Windows Sonic Audio for free. Honestly I doubt Sony wants to spend the money on that. The Blu-ray/DVD player functionality was pretty obviously a second thought, only included because the PS5 game disks are BD/BDXL. Their own 4K Players from even a couple years before the PS5 released surpass the PS5 in terms of image quality and features, so I think it just comes down to a lack of interest from the PlayStation side

@@Plumtopia It's quite embarrassing that a company that has a movie production company, and sells movies on Blu-ray 4K, has such poor support on PS5. Sony designed the Blu-ray 3D format, and even though nobody releases 3D movies anymore, many of us have a good collection of Blu-ray 3D movies that we would like to play with PS5 to watch on a 200-inch screen on PS VR2, for example. The sound drops you are experiencing are due to conflicting 5G wifi signals in your house. I also have the HTA9 and the SW5 sub and I never have problems due to the use of wifi 6 signals in our house, actually one of the speakers is right above my Wifi 6 router and it never fails. Make sure the HTA9 sync box keeps itself cool, I heard that it may lose connection if the unit gets hot after hours of use. So I installed an ultra Quiet , almost silent fan underneath my unit. Maybe be why I never have issues. The A9/SW5 are unbeatable in the home theatre space and DSP is the future of surround. Even games that only support 5.1 surround sounds like Atmos content with the A9 upscaling AE/360 technique, I'm never buying Atmos speakers without upfireing speakers anymore, it's incredible the difference it makes.

I'm glad you covered the latency. My setup is as follows: HiSense U7H (Supports Dolby Vision, Atmos, 120fps HFR, VRR, ALLM) Two HomePods (second gen) connected to Apple TV 4K (latest model) to do Dolby Atmos passthrough via eARC BolAAzuL 5 port HDMI Splitter (not in the eARC port, but in the second 4K 120 port to switch between XSX and PS5) I did not notice any latency with the XSX running Dolby Atmos (even in Hi-Fi rush, where timing is incredibly important). However, I did notice something really odd with PS5 and Horizon Forbidden West. I have to keep things in the default stereo. If I don't, there will be a significant delay (jump sound effects being a full 3-4 seconds after the action is completed for example). The "3D audio" mode is worthless in this setup, due to the nearly 4 second audio delay. I figured it was a codec thing or just the result of too much handshaking through eARC and a more budget friendly TV. But it is interesting. I'm eager for the update to come out of Beta, but I may apply the Beta update out of impatience. I am also interested in tools mentioned here like the Shark. I am only moderately technical and not anywhere close to the expertise that many in this space are, but these were my findings from someone who cares but doesn't have all the high end gear to test or the knowledge to back it up.

I had that delay running Dolby Atmos from my PC which is on Windows 10 to my TV, and because I have a Logitech z906, optical out of my TV into it because It doesn't have HDMI. @@Case_ I wanted to get digital surround sound out of my PC and the only way I could force it to do it was running Atmos on my PC and have that signal sent to my TV. Since then I've opted to not do that just because of the really bad audio delay and so I opted to just get three 3.5 mm aux cables and just do analog suround sound out the back of my motherboard. So the run was at most coming out of my graphics card's HDMI port and going to my TV, and then the TV sent a compressed AC3 version of that audio to my speakers.

If Atmos games didn't have the delay then that wouldn't be the case. Tempest is a channel based static mix format. Atmos is a dynamic object format. Tempest is both more limited with sound source placement (36 channels = 36 placement positions) and more tedious for a audio engineer to mix and master audio objects with. It's easy in the Atmos renderer to place, drag, change spl and whatnot of objects since they are dynamic. Tempest is really just a channels based audio format used for 3d audio and because it's channel based it is limited. However, there are plenty of static Dolby Atmos mixes for movies and probably for games as well I would believe. It's disappointing that this is what 3d audio on ps5 ended up, but we won't have that nasty atmos for games delay, so that's a BIG plus.

🚨Hi, does anyone have a concrete answer to this broad question (and a follow up question) for which I cannot find objective answers: does the ps5 offer Dolby atmos using lossy Dolby digital plus for ARC tv owners or is it exclusive to lossless Dolby MAT over eARC only? I know the PS5 delivers Dolby atmos via uncompressed lossless Dolby MAT which requires an eARC TV to transmit Dolby atmos to a Sonos Arc soundbar (which I will shortly be receiving); however I have the LG C8 OLED TV with ARC and it does support Dolby atmos; but instead of uncompressed Dolby MAT, it can handle compressed Dolby digital plus atmos so does anyone know if the PS5 converts the Dolby MAT into Dolby digital plus if it detects there is an ARC instead of an eARC TV? I’ve read that it is straightforward for Sony to make the availability of Dolby digital plus for getting Dolby atmos if there is no eARC for the Dolby MAT packaged Dolby atmos file on the PS5 just like when uncompressed lossless Dolby TrueHD signals are usually/easily converted into compressed Dolby digital plus where there is an ARC instead of an eARC; but it seems Sony has not allowed you to choose Dolby digital plus over Dolby MAT for the Dolby atmos type from the PS5 menu and it’s not enabled the straightforward automatic conversion of the Dolby MAT audio into Dolby digital plus so that ARC TV users can also enjoy Dolby atmos audio. This is frustrating because apparently this doesn’t even require painstaking work and the tools to provide such a conversion widely exist. This seems especially bizarre as PS5 game audio is usually compressed anyway and wasn’t encoded in Dolby atmos to begin with and the 3D audio is from existing Tempest 3D AudioTech engine and this is by no means anywhere close to the high size and bandwidth of uncompressed Dolby true hd so it should’ve been made available for Dolby digital plus type of Dolby atmos to begin with since the lossless Dolby MAT form of the ps5 3D audio in theory couldn’t possibly sound far superior to its compressed Dolby digital plus variant since the native audio source is compressed and not native Dolby atmos to begin with! In theory it shouldn’t be as big a leap in difference in movies between its Dolby digital plus and Dolby TrueHD audio variants. So it seems like a very unreasonable bottleneck for Sony to not allow ps5 Dolby atmos over ARC TV’s. What’s even more frustrating is that there is Dolby MAT 2.0 which was designed to make compatibility over ARC easier and removing the exclusive eARC requirement but it looks like Sony hasn’t taken advantage of that. If someone has a solution other than HD Fury Arcana to get the PS5 to make its Dolby atmos available in Dolby digital plus so that it can work on an LG C8 OLED TV with ARC connected to a Sonos Arc soundbar it would be greatly appreciated.

@@RobSolid It's not using the same technology, otherwise, you'd have to pay for it like on Xbox. The update does nothing for headphones, it wasn't meant to as there's already their tempest 3D audio for headphones. On Xbox, you don't have to pay for Atmos when using a sound system, which was my point, and is most apt for this since what this update was for was for those that have Atmos soundbars and receivers.

@mrchiledonut It's using tempest 3d spatial audio. 36 channels of audio that Sony themselves created. The difference between MS and Sony is that MS is primarily an OS manufacturer and Sony is huge in audio and video. Sony doesn't rely on 3rd party applications to do what they want to do. The atmos inclusion was just an easy solution to down sample their tempest audio for atmos systems. They also created a lag free solution unlike MS.
@mrchiledonut
@mrchiledonut 10 ай бұрын
@@aaronsmith7143 Yes. My comment was about the system update having nothing to do with headphones. If you're wearing headphones, nothing changed. It was for surround sound systems and a PSA that if you are wearing headphones, the settings you've always used still apply, but not for people using an Atmos soundbar or home theater. As well as how considering Sony doesn't use the same tech, you do not have to pay to use Atmos with headphones on PS5, but you never had to pay for Atmos on Xbox when it came to home theater use, just headphones.

They didn't, they speculated cos someone asked a question the previous week and Cerny thought it was an interesting discussion when he heard it and thought of telling them how it works from his engineering end. Also, they don't develop a game themselves but they're always interested in helping and giving feedback to developers from a consumer point of view. They're credited on Crysis 2 and 3 Remastered for a reason, cos they got invited to the studio and was asked directly by the devs what they could be doing to improve.

@@DriveupLife22 if you’re able to localise your sub it means that those lowest notes, which should blend seamlessly into the other sounds, are now directional. And this is a problem. Two subs is always ideal, but not always achievable in your viewing environment. Placement is critical, regardless of how many subs you’re using. In an ideal world, you’d have two subs, situated on the left and right wall either side of your seated position, but, crucially, running in mono (receiving the same signal). The one place you never want subs is upfront and either side of your main speakers. Again, if you’re able to localise your sub, you need to recalibrate and ensure your crossovers are set correctly.

There's no reasonable distinction between "real Atmos" and "just Atmos container" from the playback standpoint. Even games that have "direct/real" Dolby Atmos support (on other platforms) still use an equivalent of the Tempest engine to create the individual channels. Sony's tempest solution already has better implementation than what MS is doing. All they know how to do is plug in whatever they can get theor hands on because creativity is lost on them.
