Real ones recognize the Trading Card Game soundtrack. I'm sure it's hard, don't let the sub count beat you up. You're making top tier content, and people WILL recognize it. I watch a few different pokemon challenge channels, yours is the best format IMO. Minimal time bloat, enough data to be relevant but not too much, good planning of runs, professional but still relaxed commentary - I watch all the videos all the way through. Keep it up GLM.

I appreciate the comment a lot! You noticed the TCG soundtrack and recognize I go for minimum bloat at all costs and keep enough metrics to make the rankings make sense but not to the point where I'm paying 3 guys to devise scientific data points, lol. I also really strive for that Jrose 'talking to a friend' vibe at times so it's cool to see some of it coming across. Still catching up with the older videos but I was REALLY curious about the new one and holy DAMN. Watching the older videos does make me appreciate all the more the effort you put as you went further, learning the coding, editing the intros, the rank system using TCG-like cards, the soundtrack variety (especially the GBC TCG stuff!)...And the hiker Anthony edit killed me. Top shelf comedy and commentary, really. And it was nice to see what those two are TRULY capable of in gen 1 as Sanqui didn't count. A slash-like move with STAB made quite the difference...Palkia out there space rending asses. While I can't send more likes than one (and I wish I could), for all that it is worth, I really appreciate your dedication. It is very clear you put a lot of passion into this stuff, considering you are still going even when you are juggling other things at the same time.

If I can suggest some Pokemon we haven't seen at all yet, some of the Ultra Beasts would probably do pretty well! I'm a huge fan of Celesteela as a Pokemon but I think UBs have both their highs...and their lows. I cannot imagine how Nihilego is going to feel to play. You don't have to do it obviously but I like seeing the underdog Pokemon fight for their time too. These two runs were super tight too. Spacial Rend is one of the most insane moves in Generation 1 and I'm glad we got to see its raw power even just briefly against the late-game. You're a real one as always.
@GymLeaderMatt19872 ай бұрын

Buzzswole was at the top of the list but these days I'm a really big Guzzlord fan personally. Best shiny in the series! With pressed time and me not being the most efficient, videos like this are hard to produce but I'll have to look into them for next year. I got my roadmap for this one already filled up. I'm not sure how I'd approach it. Realistically with a family and playing Pokemon being a hobby that I just do at times, I can only do like 26~ videos a year so balancing it all is the tough part because you still want to grow and get at least some views, haha.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Would it even be feasible in the code to add the Beast Boost ability in some way, shape or form? Even if the stat boost isn't dynamic and just a specific stat being boosted upon defeat regardless of the actual highest stat.
@GymLeaderMatt19872 ай бұрын
I've simulated abilities for some lower tier runs but the general premise is no abilities, which is what made Slaking and Regigigas so good. It's a bit of a can of worms to allow some Pokemon to get abilities while others don't. Like if I give them that then why aren't I giving Groudon perma sunny day or Kyogre drizzle, you know? Atm I don' t have a great solution for abilities though.
@tamonowo2472 ай бұрын
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I feel like abilities are a case by case basis in the sense that the novelty of them in the context of Gen1 differs. Slaking or Regigigas in Gen1 get their novelty from not being shackled by the ability while a lot of the fun of UBs comes from the ability. That being said, I still think the UBs would be very interesting to see even without their main selling point of Beast Boost due to their very minmaxed stats and typings (i.e. Nihilego on Brock)
@GymLeaderMatt19872 ай бұрын
Everything to the side, if someone coded in the ability to get a stat boost to your highest stat when you knock out a Pokémon, I’d test it but I doubt the tech exists. Remember that self debuff moves didn’t exist in vanilla either and it was like an on and off process of months to figure it out and it was just changing something slightly.

You’re the real one, my dude. So damn hype. I was really looking forward to this one, Gen 1 spacial rend is legit maybe the strongest single turn move in the history of Pokémon other than maybe fishious rend. Weird lol. Too bad there’s no learn set where it’s a starting move. I didn’t consider just how insane dialga’s defensive typing was though, nothing really has ground moves until yellow.
@GymLeaderMatt19872 ай бұрын
For sure. Even if it was Yellow, I think you'd just see a few ice beams and be done with it, haha. The late game of these Pokemon are so strong that I could put custom moves for the enemy teams and it wouldn't matter but it was cool to see them do well. I need to go back to regular Mewtwo soonish in the next few months because I think I could push it higher and redo some of the tier list numbers.
@banditrests2 ай бұрын
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 ok yeah, that’s fair, you’d probably just outspeed and one shot 90% of the game regardless of what moves the enemy Pokémon had because these two are such power houses. Gen 1 hyper beam rules for roar of time was also pretty funny. For sure, you could definitely get some time off base mewtwo’s run, it’s a good metric for player skill.
@GymLeaderMatt19872 ай бұрын
Yea, mainly just so I can be accurate with my tier list. I can't imagine building a tier list and not knowing what the top was for real. I want to get it's time down to whatever I can muster, maybe in the 1h 49ish minute range, balance the formula around that where Mewtwo is the only 100/100 and work backwards. I've already started designing scaling resets and all that but I want a good barometer that works with my ruleset to not make you play 30 runs to accurately see a Pokemon. In fact, I might deduct points for more than 3 playthroughs just because that's usually where I stop and it's not fair if I do more with some. Koffing is the next run and I've already done 5 fucking playthroughs lol. It's such a dumb Pokemon that for some reason I keep thinking I can break it.
@banditrests2 ай бұрын
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 that makes a lot of sense, base mewtwo is really the intended power ceiling for gen 1 in terms of game design and that’s a pretty reasonable goal. You definitely should deduct points for requiring a lot of play throughs, being extremely RNG dependent or unintuitive to play is a detriment to how “good” a Pokémon is. Oh Jesus man, I don’t envy you doing 5 runs where all you have for Brock is tackle and smog. Maybe just for fun toss on some back transfer moves, it might not be total dog shit with psybeam and flamethrower lol.

I wouldn't mind rebuilding everything myself as a capstone graduation project. A new overlay that uses Python as the base but that's forever away. Right now, I got a list of 7 Pokemon I'd like to run and if I stay on schedule, it'll finish out the year. Preliminary plans are Koffing (been putting it off for 3 months), Giratina, Ampharos, Blaziken, Arceus, Dewgong, and Mewtwo so I can finally tweak my ranking formula.

When I was younger I was a Dialga stan all the way, but as I got more into competitive Pokemon I found that Palkia tends to fit my more offensive playstyle better. Z Heal Block (which gives you +2 SpA) Palkia in Gen 7 is crazy if you can manage to pull it off. Not surprising that Spacial Rend and Gen 1 crit mechanics end up giving Palkia the edge.

Both of those pokemon are known for being the most broken of all time, maybe they could even have a VS episode. Either way it would be interesting to see them perform in Gen 1 (I know you already did Rayquaza, but the boosted stats may help it a bit)
@GymLeaderMatt19872 ай бұрын
Zacian could be interesting but the thing is that I've already done Ray. It doesn't have a good set to deal with Brock in any generation and the mega would just be that with some extra stats. Palkia got through this so well because there wasn't a single Salamence to halt its rampage. Dialga still finished quite well; it could have gone either way in the end. Looking forward to seeing Giratina and how it stacks up to them one day.
@GymLeaderMatt19872 ай бұрын
Ha, I can't say I get the reference but jesus christ a Spacial Rend would kill 18 Salamence I bet. It would be like 600 effective power lol. Giratina should be fun but I just don't think it'll hold a candle. No crazy special move, more reliant on physical damage, and overall just has less stats in favor of having a ton of HP.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I figured you wouldn't get the joke. Basically, a long time ago, if you searched Palkia on Google, its weaknesses were listed as "Fairy and Salamence" (instead of Dragon). @fortello72192 ай бұрын
Alright, time for another prediction on who will win. It's really hard to say when both of these monsters have almost as much special as Mewtwo AND they have next to no weaknesses. (Also like Mewtwo) Their movesets are also very similar. Presuming that Roar of Time also works like gen 1 Hyper Beam, thus letting you chain KOs with it, then I'll have to lean towards Dialga. Palkia is faster but that doesn't mean much when they're both fast enough to outspeed everything they fight already. (Stat exp, etc) And Special Rend is probably stronger than Roar of Time with its auto crit, but that doesn't matter if they both OHKO. So really the only big difference would be resistances I suppose. With Dialga resisting Normal and Palkia not it might just barely edge out an advantage. There's also Blaine, I guess. Blaine does neutral to Dialga, rather than .25x against Palkia. But that only matters if he hits. And if it's really a problem then Dialga could use Power Gem against him. They're super close, but my gut says Dialga.
@GymLeaderMatt19872 ай бұрын
It really is a close one! You'll see what decides it later in the video but you almost touched on it.
@fortello72192 ай бұрын
@@GymLeaderMatt1987I guess I should really factor Alakazam more into my predictions. It's basically the only Pokemon that matters in the elite 4 when you have high special and no glaring weaknesses 😂 Also, I didn't account for _how under leveled_ these two were! 2 extra levels on Dialga probably could have made Roar of Time a no range KO on all those times. As well, Gengar being *just* high enough level to outspeed was costly.
@GymLeaderMatt19872 ай бұрын
Yea, Palkia determined that for Dialga. The big thing about time saving I’ve found from these great runs is spending a lot of time picking up extra candies just to save like 5 turns in the elite 4 is a loss and Dialga had to keep cutting just to keep up with Palkia.

The community aspect is dead, I'll give you that, but anything else I'd have grievances or gripes about I just keep quiet and observe silently, lol. I have to maintain at least some professionalism about it. The truth is that the niche is dwindling and overall views are slashed in half. Just watch the dreaded 'daily December' Scott and Jrose do behind the guise of giving the community a ton of content where the reality is that it's about sweet cash from increased ad revenue. You are going to Scott with a lot of videos stuck in the 20k range, unless it's a VS video, and Jrose potentially not even breaking 100k on some of them. Don't even get me started on someone releasing like 5 videos over 11 months and then magically finding the willpower and motivation to do 30+ videos in the final month, that's another wormhole. It's something that trickles down and affects smaller channels and it's ultimately why I think most people I've known over the years that made solid content just called it quits. I legitimately dread releasing December content because it's already drying up and Scott and Jrose's monopoly over the genre releasing 60+ videos between the two will suck dry every ounce of new viewers and potential there is but there's not a thing you can do about it, lol. Honestly, it just comes down that I like to play Pokemon. I have no monetary incentive and just do my own thing these days since winning competitions isn't enough, haha. I just have fun with it!
