That's one thing about Diana ross; you can give her a song and she can sing it exactly the way it is written and within the genre of music that is intended. That is precision singing, which is not easy. Yet, she still made it her own with that immaculate pitch and tone, clear annunciation and heartfelt emotion.

Such a shame she's not a real singer despite any enunciation she may have going on. Isn't this the same woman who made all those strange slurping and gurgling and gulping type of enunciations in the Motown master bedroom suite with the owner of the Motown record label back in the day? 🤔 I could be mistaken but please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

This made me smile because so many times people dismiss singers with soft voices...but Diana stayed on key, had control and had a beautiful tone. I have just finished listening to other singers who have more powerful voices, but some notes were flat, all over the place and just a hot mess. The bottom line is: Sometimes LESS is MORE and you don't have to hit crazy notes and be all over the place to sing a song well.

Ms. Ross proves again here how versatile a performer she is and how pure and beautiful her unique soprano voice has always been. So many good singers have come up empty when performing the national anthem. But, as always, Ms. Ross was prepared, knew the meaning of the song and her interpretation captured perfectly the song's spirit. She has never relied on vocal gimmicks or tricks, and she does not sing songs to prove something. She has always been the songwriter's best friend, doing beautiful interpretations of thesongs of the composers of the American songbook, made hits of the best of the pop/rock composers, gave us wonderful versions of spirituals and songs of hope, sang the blues magnificently, and even done a little opera and country and western without missing a beat. Her live performances match her recordings, and her voice is so unique that you can hear just the first note of a song and know that it is Diana Ross -- and that you are in for a treat. She is a legend and one of the greatest performers of all time!

Wow. I've never seen that clip before. You know, I've often heard it said that our National Anthem is one the hardest songs to sing. Having something to do with the phrasing and how it starts out on a low note and ends on a high. Well our Miss Ross is a master at phrasing and she articulates every word. She was in great voice that day and she made the singing of this difficult song seem effortless. I love the soulful spin Marvin Gaye put to it and Whitney Houston's performance was certainly invigorating, but for my money Diana's performance of it here is the best I've ever heard it sung. In perfect voice. Pristine and pure, she stuck to the melody, invoking a sense of pride, respect and love of country that is often missing from the efforts of other singers whose attempts seem to be more about showing off their vocal techniques than expressing the emotions this song was meant to inspire in us. This is what makes Diana Ross, in my opinion, a truly great vocalist. She doesn't just sing the song. She "emotes" the song like an actor. Using the right vocal inflections she makes us feel what she's singing. Whether its the sadness in "Someday we'll be together" or the bliss of an "Endless Love" or the yearning to break free and succeed on her own terms in "It's My Turn", her ability to access us on an emotional level is what makes her the Boss. That's how I see it anyway.

This lady's voice is gorgeous. What a pretty set of pipes! Pristine, strong, well-controlled, intricate, emotive, and delicate! This is a perfect song and this is the attention it should be given, versus all that over-singing and yelling that is trying to be passed off as good singing by so many other artists. You can be an R&B singer or whatever, but there is a time and place to respect the INTEGRITY OF THE SONG.

Oh please! She did a great job but there is no lack of "integrity" in R&B singing. that would taint this song that was written by a slave owner. Fuq this song and fuq the rapist/beast who wrote it.
@classanddignity

YOU ARE TWISTING MY WORDS! This song is a well-written and difficult song to sing, because the melody jumps around. Symbolically, it did denote a history of disenfranchising Black-Americans when originally written, like this country always has. However, it does not take away from the structure of this piece. R and B singers tend to not to respect the integrity of many great songs (structure/interpretation). Furthermore, there is such thing as over-singing. She is putting R and B into this song….but SENSIBLY!

I hear people on here trying to decribe Diana's singing and her voice people wrongly decribe Diana's voice as fragile there is nothing fragile about Diana's voice her voice is not fragile if that was the case she would not be able to sing ain't no mountain high enough you have to be pretty strong vocally to being that song the way she does and if you notice no one can quite sing that song the way Diana Ross sings it. Diana sings beautifully and smoothly and her tynique and phrasing is flawless non like her all by herself. As in this song Diana remains true to who she has always been. Singing with her phrasing and style she is known for Diana sings she does not scream she sings smoothly and gently . But she to can scream and holla but that not her she simply sings fragile is the wrong word to define or decribe Diana's voice because vocally she is very strong ,her vocals are sweet and gentile Webster's dictionary decribes gentile as something that is soothing, kind, tender, or you can say her voice is melodious meaning something pleasant sounding , beautiful and tuneful singing voice now that correctly decribes Diana's singing voice . Diana voice is not fragile Webster dictionary decribes fragile as easily broken shattered of damaged , brittle , frail again you cannot sing ain't no mountain high enough like she does with a fragile voice or the boss the way she sang it on record or even home the way she did with a fragile voice. Now just to name someone with a fragile voice would be like a Vanessa Williams ,or a Janet Jackson now I'm not saying those names to criticize anyone but only to show the difference between a fragile voice and a gentile voice.. I don't think either one of them could scream and hollar Diana can do both again I'm saying that only to show the difference between a person who sings with a melodious sound and gently ,vs. one who voice is fragile and again not trying to put anyone down ,and I like any one of them

Whitney honored Diana Ross because Diana made it possible for women like Whitney [Whitney's praise]. Diana who sung it in the original timing and as it was written, with her perfectly pitched effortless sound is amazing. Most singers cannot especially follow this difficult song without changing the song and timing, like every other R&B singer CAN ONLY DO. Diana sung it perfectly without changing it, which is a harder task due to the control, and yet still put her signature sound on it. Diana does not have to yell, scream, shout, over sing, or derivate from a song to own the song and sing it with soul.

that was beautiful! Superbowl XVI - 1982 I think. I actually prefer Ross's interpretation over the many over the top renditions that plagued the Superbowl after Whitney's eponymous version. Ross's is acapella, simple, clean and heartfelt and I can hear the audience singing with her. I also loved the flag and patriotic outfit too. The whole thing is gorgeous. It would be nice to see a well known singer do it like this again in the future, and forget about diva theatrics and trying to match Whitney's version. It was 1982. Diana had just released the Why Do Fools Fall In Love Album in the late Fall of 1981. They were playing that song and Mirror Mirror like crazy. She looked beyond beautiful.

Yes, Ms. Ross can certainly command that friendly order. That's what makes her so special. She always welcomes her audience to get involved so she can feel our energy and that we can feel hers.

This is the best original version of this song that I have heard. This song should be sung properly, which means sticking to the music basically, or as much as possible. This is a difficult song to sing because the melody jumps around; so most singers, especially R&B singers, cannot sing it as it was written, so they try to compensate and over sing it. That includes, Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, Patti, Aretha, Cristina, Mariah etc. Diana's voice is pristine, strong, well-controlled and high-pitched. A classic mainstream version without all that unnecessary rework. Johnny Mathis's is also very good.

You have gotten everything wrong in summing me up! Moreover, over singing does not mean soulful-over singing is just over singing. They do tend to over sing things, although they may have good voices. Furthermore, I am not intimidated by anything. Their renditions have no continuity when you do it inappropriately. I do respect a gospel version like Margaret Bell, who did it better than all these other gospel-styled ladies I mentioned. She sung it from the heart vs.trying to show off. Anyway, it is very hard to sing something as it is written as opposed to adopting your own style to it.

classanddignity Mariah didn't oversing it honestly, she sang it well.

@Sam Sam Mariah did sing it well partly, but towards the end singing that higher note, which is her signature; yet is not a note in the song, which broke the continuity of the song.

A true phenom. She sang it real and true and didn't have to "make it hers" by altering the song in any way. What a Queen.

The Only Person That Was Not Singing Was Joe Montana During The Song LOL Still a Beautiful Version By Diana Ross!

That's because Joe has always had a secret crush on her. He showed it again, back in the early 90s when Diana Ross was singing at an event honoring Muhammed Ali and some of the All Pro Football players when she sang the Best Years of My Life. He just was in complete awe and blushed quite a bit.
