Dick Proenneke was the OG of life below zero! There was something about that video you took inside of Dicks cabin with the guitar music playing that made me well up with emotion, looking at all the work he did and thinking of the joy he must have felt living there for so many years… what a legacy!! Something about that touched my soul and made me actually miss the man I never knew in person, but knew intimately from his journals and videos. Thanks for “virtually” filling something on my bucket list! It’s amazing; as time goes on, Mr. proenneke’s legend GROWS!!

Shawn, this detailed recording and presentation is a beautiful tribute to, Dick Proenneke, and is a great gift for those that admire his ways. Your own journey, all the way to your meticulous video capture of, Dick’s cabin and its surroundings, is documentary gold! Your mentor must be smiling upon you for sharing that which he valued greatly and shared himself. May this journey serve to add fuel your own.

@@terryjp3050 ~ How sad is your life? Shawn just started his journey a couple years ago, and look how far he has come, and this is just the beginning steps. Unless you are trying to suggest that Proenneke was famous or even known at all within his beginnings, then your comment only manages to make you appear irrational and without perspective.

Man, dick proenneke was a legend !! He did something most of us only talk about ! But he actually done. When I first watched his videos part 1 and then part 2 it’s like it opened me up to a whole new realm of possibility, and peace that I never knew existed ! I mean u really have to be brave to go really where no one else has ever been ! To land that had never been truly settled ! I am happy they made it a landmark and they are preserving it because I am 100 percent going to visit someday soon ! What an absolute gorgeous place it was to build on !! Wow so much inspiration

That fish looked delicious! I remember rustic camping with my family as a child. My Mom and Dad did this every year in August before us kids went back to school. Off to Canada in the back bush rustic camping with nothing but a tent and camping gear. Us kids were in heaven......we hunted for frogs, tunnels, and swam and bathed every night in the lakes.....wonderful memories.....I’m 68 now....Thank you for the memories......:)

This is just a fantastic vlog series Shawn, especially for those of us who have not made the pilgrimage to Dicks Cabin in the Twin lakes to pay respect to the man! It's a real humbling insight and for those who cannot travel there for whatever reason it feels like we're there.. To see that cabin, his boots, snowshoes and the fireplace he built along with everything else so well preserved is such a privilege! Congratulations on this bucket list achievement!

I was 8 years old when those words were written and already dreaming of what life would be like alone in the wilderness... the days of watching "Charlie the Lonesome Cougar" and always building my own camp when on family camping trips. It pleases me so much to see you up there in Alaska, appreciating the environment and the history of the place. I first found your KZbin videos after watching some of Dick Proenneke that have found their way onto the internet... keep on keeping on Sean... your journey is very inspiring and enriching a lot of lives in the here and now.

It's not what you have, or what he had,..it's the fact that you have the same heart & Passion as Mr. proenneke, and you are just as gifted as Mr. proenneke himself. I think he would have admired you, as much as you did him. never feel short of others accomplishments in life,..you are in the same league as Mr. pronneke, and every viewer who has followed you long enough,...would agree. ~Kevin

We were both impressed and amazed. As I am now in my 50's I can completely understand Dick's point of view now. I really don't think I am that tough though. Your cabin build reminded me of that. Very impressive and this is the year I begin building my own cabin on a leased camp lot. Patience is the key and I will take my time and do it right. I won't be posting on KZbin though.

Shawn, I have watched your videos since well. pretty much you started. Your comment on this vid where you stated that you may not appreciate where you are at because of Alaska's beauty is understandable but, not real. You are living this 51 year old man's dream. I work 6 days a week 12 hours a day to keep my middle class American life. Live to work, work to live... I am so inspired by what you have created that I really hope to do something similar. I live in Oklahoma …not quite Canada but, there are places to build that a man could survive. I have so many questions but would be too long here...I was FORTUNATE to have spent 20 days in Alaska when I was a young teen. My step-dad was a baseball umpire. He went to Alaska every year and would umpire games in the Alaska league. That is during the time that the salmon are running. He took me , my mom and step-brother one year, I flew in the scariest plane ever there...We went from Anchorage , Fairbanks and Kenai...several other places that I do not remember the names. did get to go to Denali National Park. The fishing there ruined me. Nothing has compared since. This has got too long but, over the years I have tried to explain to people how overwhelming Alaska is and never could get the picture across in words. Oh yeh...we caught Graylings also. Great tasting fish!! Would love to have a conversation with you sometime. Good luck in all you do!!!! God bless!!! Sorry for the Grammar and long comment. It is early Sunday morning and I just woke up on my day off....God bless,

Did a book report on One Man's Wilderness as a freshman and it impacted me greatly. Visited the Twin Lake area the year after I graduated high school in '87 with my brother and two friends. Did the float and fishing trip down the Chilikadrotna River, the Coho, Grayling and Trout were abundant. Although we did not get to visit Mr. Proenneke's homestead we did view it from the air and that was plenty magical for us. The best 16 days of my life. Often when I watch your videos, I think back to those wonderful memories of the Alaskan bush. For some reason I feel proud of you for fulfilling a dream that many have but few achieve. Thank you Shawn for not letting my own memories be forgotten. Blessings to you sir, a true steward of the wilderness.

I stumbled on Proenneke's Documentary on PBS a few years ago. It changed my life and made me realize how unhappy I am with conventional living. Sadly I never changed anything and I continue to live unhappily while the yearning to live the way he did day by day is slowly fading. But just knowing there are people like you and Dick out there helped me realize I'm not the only one yearning for that kind of life. Sadly I don't see myself taking a chance. He jumped out to early and didn’t heed the pilot yelling for him to wait until the propeller stopped.

Glad you started adjusting to the summer daylight. Now that you have experienced the midnight sun you can understand the feeling. Its like you are full of energy and the sun is your fuel. Before I moved to Alaska if you would have told me about that feeling I would have been skeptical, but once you experience it there is nothing like it. Love your experience so far, I look forward to the rest of the series.

1968 Dick Proenneke builds his cabin.....I watched Alone in the Wilderness tonight. I saw his aluminum canoe, the meat cash, snow shoes for deep snow and the shelves made with dowels. He believed in safety when you work alone and loved peaceful solitude.......I have a new perspective and am enjoying your videos of this historical place. I see a lot of similar characteristics in you and the Tilley hat that is your trademark! :)

Beautiful country Shawn. I am glad for you finally being able to make it to Alaska. You know, we live where we live because it's home. Sure there's places that are more exotic. Places that are more romantic, but when you sum everything up, there's no place like home. Enjoy! Vaughn

We have watched about 18 videos of Dick and his place, friends and visitors over the years from 1967 to 2000, his last visit at 84 with the pilot grandson of the guy that first flew him there, all VERY Interesting...!! 😎👍✅

July 14th 2008, my father disappeared at his cabin in Northern Michigan. He was with his dog on a hike. His dog came back 20 days later. Things happen, take precautions.

Again, Thanks for taking us along. Your filming is outstanding and I hope everyone realizes you walk twice as far when ever you have to back track for your camera. You can tell you are really enjoying it. However do not sell yourself short on what you have achieved and what you will achieve. I'm sure Dick Proenneke would admire what you are doing and plan to do and appreciate that you are sharing it with so many. Keep up the good work. A little note .I was in Vietnam when he was building his cabin. Would have given anything to be with him instead.
