I’ll never forget the opening of Mary Poppins back in 1964. Mom and all 7 of us kids were in the station wagon just about to back out of the driveway and I smarted off to my Mom. She gave me “the look” but I didn’t heed it. Without saying one word, she pulled forward, turned off the car, and said ... we’re not going to see Mary Poppins and you can thank your brother and his mouth. I tried to apologize but Mom felt a lesson needed to be taught. A week later, we went and believe you me my mouth was shut and I was on best behavior! Sped ahead all these years later, I went on opening day December 19, 2018 ... with memories of Mom, my siblings, and on my best behavior!

I read somewhere that Julie Andrews declined to cameo in this because she didn't want to take the spotlight from Emily Blunt, but ironically, P.L. Travers, the author of the original Mary Poppins novels, stipulated firmly in her will (or she had an agreement with the Walt Disney Company, I forget which) that no more Mary Poppins movies be made unless Julie Andrews were involved. So, considering that the author of the books felt so strongly about it, I think we can chalk this up to a case of an actress actually being too humble.

Dick Van Dyke was not the only actor from the original "Mary Poppins" to appear in "Mary Poppins Returns." Karen Dotrice, who played Jane Banks in the 1964 classic, made a walk-on appearance about half way through the sequel.
