If you are watching/listening to this and you feel like "Janie" in the song there are good people out there who can help you. A gun is not the answer. There are helplines you can call in the US, the UK, and most countries, that are completely "anonymous", meaning you don't have tell anything you don't want to and nothing you say will ever get back to your abuser. Professional people (usually a woman but a man if you prefer) who understand what you're going through (many of them were in the same position once) will chat and listen to everything you have to say without judging you. Please call a helpline when you can. Don't give up! There out people out there who care about you, you've just got to let them know you're in trouble. The number to call in the UK is 0800 1111, it's called "childline", don't worry it's free and nooone will know. I don't know the numbers for other countries but maybe if people could leave them in the comments that would be nice. Love to all,xx

When I was a littke girl my mom remarried my step father beat me. My mother would get angry and actually pull my hair out I would also get lumps from where she would shove me into walls. My grandma called CPS on them and CPS was USELESS. Heck they'd lock me in my room for hours.....told the CPS that I liked it and when CPS talked to me they did it in front of my mom and stepfather. It got to the point I was planning to run away or....stab my stepfather I almost did it too...when he hit my mother over the head with a bottle. So yeah....save your life by any means necessary. Also many kids fall through the cracks and this is their last resort. If you've never been abused in any way you'd never understand how desperate things get. You can call for help but if the person that's abusing you is someone who's high standing then nobody will believe you....at least until you end up dead or like me in the hospital in a coma and on life support at 9 years old.

It happened to me as a little girl. Nobody listened, and nobody helped because nobody believed me. I didn't kill him. But I put a stop to the physical and sexual abuse all the same. Like most cowards and bullies, he didn't want to eat what he was so fond of dishing out. I took boxing and martial arts lessons from a retired cop who was teaching kids in the neighborhood for free.

The saddest part of this video, to me anyway, is the fact that the Mother is watching the Father go into and come out of their daughter's room. Both parents are responsible, and Janie has no one to turn to. Sadly, most mothers do know and do nothing. It makes me sick.
@Derry_Aire3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, you have no clue what most mothers go through in these situations. The mothers will have gone through physical/sexual/verbal abuse/threats to break her down and keep her down, make her subservient, and with most women in this type of relationship, it does. It's easy to say run away, but that is incredibly difficult to do when someone has such a fierce hold on you.
@JerisEve3 жыл бұрын
@@Derry_Aire I don't doubt you. Financially, running away isn't always an option either. I sounded very critical of the mothers, but what I actually meant was that the daughter has two parents, and neither is available to help her.

Very heavy subject matter, but sadly more prevalent than you might imagine. I used to cofacilitate an abuse survivors group, and a fairly large percentage of that group over the years had experienced some form of incest. When I was growing up, abuse issues of any sort tended to get swept under the rug, and there was even more victim-blaming than there is now, but I think this song came out when there was a growing openness to acknowledging the issue and starting to have the important conversations about how to help survivors, how to seek help for yourself or a loved one, and how to change the culture so abusive behavior is no longer inadvertently enabled or (depending on the type of abuse) even sometimes tacitly accepted. Thanks for reacting to this song. I'm sure I must have heard it before, but I never really listened closely to the lyrics until tonight.

We were coming out of the oil crisis, the economy was picking up from 18% interest rates. We in our 20s, had the world in our hands! This subject was tackled in the 80s. "Dog Day Afternoon", excellent movie. Al Pacino and Sal Mineo, two great actors. One of those movies that leave you speechless. I highly recommend it, along with "All the President's Men" and "Lady Sings the Blues". About sexual abuse of children: A friend told me that her very young son had been sexually abused by his slightly older female cousin. She was glad that he had told her about what happened and could deal with it, she was going to keep him away from that cousin. What she didn't realize was that she (the cousin) was also being abused and was acting out what was happening to her. My friend was shocked when I told her she should find out who was abusing the girl, she had not thought of that, she had assumed that the girl was just evil. I told my friend, no, the girl is also a victim.

As a child abused by her father and two older brothers this song hits hard home. I’m 47 years old and still have a huge impact in my life. They said time heals everything but I’m still hunted by this horror of being abused by my father and two brothers. I did tell my biological mother but she said I was dreaming. That’s the day she stopped being my mother and became a sneak. I hate him so much as I hate her for not protecting me and my sister (whom was abused as well) and killed her self last week. I’ve been working with a psychiatrist but I guess this kind of pain lessens but it’ll be a part of my life. I killed him so many times in my head but I was afraid and nobody knew because it was my fault according to the sneak. It’s a terrible thing as you said, specially when she’s writing on the floor “lost”. Thank you Dan Love, Lu

Here is a an interesting tidbit about the album Pump. It was recorded in Vancouver in the summer of 1989 at Little Mountain Sound. That is why this song charted so high in Canada. One night I was at the nightclub, Club Soda, in Vancouver, I went to see the band The Payola$, and Bruce Dickinson, from Iron Maiden, comes on stage, as a surprise guest and starts jamming with the band, then a few minutes later, Steve Tyler comes in and rips it up on stage! I've never seen the entire uncut version, and I might not have heard the uncut audio either, even though I saw them in concert twice. This video and song was heavily edited and only played after hours on MTV. It was played ad nauseum on the radio, and even though I knew what it was about, it just sort of became background sound to me. I appreciate you reviewing it. I loved Aerosmith in the 70's, and the 80s and 90s were too pop-y for me. This is probably the only one of the later stuff I liked, but the video for Cryin' is cute and a little more upbeat despite it being called Cryin'. But some 70s recommendations are Sweet Emotion and Back in the Saddle. Kind of unrelated, the more recent song Dog Days Are Over by Florence and the Machine is a perfect bookend to this one, IMO. The live versions are really as good as if not better than the studio versions.

Aerosmith was big in the Eighties and some of the Nineties, and even popularized rap when they re-recorded their hit song, "Walk This Way" with Run DMC, the rap group, and had another hit with them. And, they had some great power ballads and love songs. However, I think their best rock songs were from the Seventies, like the aforementioned song, along with "Sweet Emotion" "Toys in the Attic" "Train Kept-A-Rollin'" "Last Child" "Back in the Saddle" "Spaced" "Round and Round" and many others. Aerosmith is one of the biggest rock bands ever and I'm sure your future reactions of them will be awesome, especially if you stick to their Seventies rock era.

I can tell you this is not an easy subject. The long-term effects are horrendous, including ptsd, the powerlessness, the what exactly went down, will I get over this ever? You brain screaming at you, what can I do to cope with this betrayal on such a fundamental level, though you just don't understand as a child, or have the words. This destroys lives forever, how can you learn at school, concentrate on getting good grades, when your mind is deeply occupied on that. What about the physical damage inflicted? When a person is not grown enough to handle the physical effects? The mental trauma, which takes so many years to come to terms with. Then the question of the legal system, which runs on confrontation, further destroys the survivors, who have lost far too much already, being badgered by the defense who deliberately won't believe them, to get the abuser off. No a gun is not a healthy way out, you often need like until 30 years old to find better coping methods. Yet the legal system puts a time limit on it. So who makes the laws? The perpetrators? It takes years to get into the right headspace to even talk about such things, and they want you to go through it again, over and over, for everyone in the court? Shameful system that re-traumatises the survivors by rote. Aerosmith's Steve Tyler built a home for abused kids. Bruce Willis and Steve Tyler's daughter, Liz Tyler did a movie, Steve did the song, I don't wanna miss a thing , for the movie. She was also in the Tom Hanks movie, That thing you do. Run DMC and Aerosmith did one of Aerosmith's songs together, Walk this Way. ,

Concerning sexual child abuse, most people still think and warn children of STRANGERS. But mostly it's family members, fathers, uncles, brothers who are the offenders. This misconception was present even more back in the 80ies or 90ies. So, to write this song and to consider how to best promote it was a good thing and would still be today.

This hits home for me as there was abuse of this nature in my extended family. In 1987, I was interested in a Hispanic girl and my friend turned to me and said, "Her father still has to 'break her in'." He was matter of fact about that, too. He followed up by saying that this was part of their culture.

Thanks for the insightful review. Great song with a hard subject. Hell Is For Children by Pat Benetar would be a fantastic song to further this conversation.

“The Confessor” by Joe Walsh! One of his best songs from 1986 (I believe)! Great message, great sound and lead guitar solo, which is angry, and trends with the message!

You have to do old Aerosmith. They became a commercial band after 1978. Before that they kicked ass.

The “sister” song for this to react to would be Pat Benatar’s Hell is for Children, similar message, incredible lyrics and music.

The fact that her mom knew and did nothing to stop it or help Janie always made me SO mad.

For a totally different Aerosmith vibe - check out "Seasons of Whither" acoustic version

If you want 80's and 90's songs that tackle this tough subject, Pat Benetar's "Hell is for Children" and The Mission's "Amelia"

Today's MTV is NOTHING like the MTV gone by. Wall-to-wall music videos, music video debuts and announcements, music shows (like TRL [Total Request Live] w/Carson Daly), and music news were all the programming... until stuff like Road Rules starting creeping in. At the time of this video, MTV was followed very closely by kids.

Really great reaction and lyric background. It wasn't just the father's betrayal but the mother was aware....options few. Lead singer Steven Tyler has from what I understand a charity helping abused girls...powerful music.
