It's amazing the inner detective that comes out in these situations! I searched for my bio father for 20+ years. Every lead came up empty. I started saying he was a ghost. Then Ancestry DNA came along and WHAM, I had a match (his sister). Long story short, he passed away when I was 8 months old so I couldn't talk to or meet him. Which explains why I couldn't find him. However, I found out I had two brothers. One of the brothers is supposedly the spitting image of him and his character. We've met and become part of each other's lives. I'm so thankful for him and his family. I hope to meet the other brother someday. Good luck with the rest of your journey! For those who might be searching, I can say I've known quite a few people to get the answers they needed via Ancestry DNA.

This is true, I've been trying to decide if I should reach out to the family of the man who is my bio dad. He doesn't know about me so I'm super reluctant, but maybe through an Aunt or Uncle might be the best way. I also worry about current family status, some people are so funny about finding out their parent was human. I have friends who found out they had a surprise bonus brother who was super excited to get to know them and they closed ranks and shut him out for no reason other than they viewed him as a troublemaker and annoying. I tried to give them my perspective but it didn't help. So the kid was given away through no fault of his own and then shunned as an adult as if it was still his fault. So you can imagine since I witnessed that happening I'm even more terrified to do anything.

Listen, I found my 70yr old formerly childless Uncle a 37yr old daughter he never knew existed through my taking the Ancestry DNA test. Her name popped up as a first cousin, and as far as I knew, I personally knew all of my first cousins and she wasn’t one of them LOL Her name however was familiar to me as she grew up in the same NYC neighborhood that three generations of my family had been born in. I grew up there and so did my uncle and even his parents, my grandparents. She’d also been born there, adopted there, and grew up there as well. They probably passed each other on the street thousands of times without knowing they had any connection to each other. She’s quite a few years younger than I am so we just never ran in the same crowd, I knew of her from neighborhood functions and gathering but didn’t really know her personally, just a familiar face & name... But the thing is, her biological mother and my uncle only had a one night fling, so she’d never told him she’d gotten pregnant and they never crossed paths again. Remember though, it was at a time (late 70’s as well) there was a whole lot of that type of free love thing going on and both her bio-mom & my uncle had an alcohol problem during that period as well. So he still doesn’t remember having that one night fling, he’s got no recollection of this woman at all, so maybe she didn’t truly know who the father of this child was either, that is a possibility. However, she did lie and give my cousin a fake name and had her searching for a ghost. Which I found to not really be fair to her, but also not really my place to judge, we can never really know why people do what they do, maybe it was vanity and she was just embarrassed she couldn’t remember who the father of this child she placed for adoption could have been? Who knows... With all that said, regardless everyone’s lack of memory of the night in question, she sure is his daughter, DNA doesn’t lie LOL Ancestry is bringing together families that may not have had any other way to get this finality. It’s really an amazing thing!! My uncle got sober almost 30yrs ago and this revelation has given him a new lease on life. He and his wife of 20yrs had just settled into retirement and thought everything would be calm for the remainder of their lives, they never imagined this happening 😂 They have welcomed this girl as if she’d always been theirs. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions but I don’t think it could have gone any better than it has 10 months in so far. Our entire family has welcomed her with open arms. So take it slow with your dad, it is all a shock to the system right now, for both of you. When I first told him of the news he kinda ignored it and hung up. Called me back within minutes and apologized for that reaction. Nothing to apologize for, it’s the biggest shock to anyone’s life!! He had to absorb it, tell his wife about it and then call me back to really discuss what I’d found and how I’d found it. Worked out beautifully though.

My only sibling a brother, died in 2013. Never having married or had children. My oldest two kids had placed DNA on Ancestry several years ago. About three months ago my daughter received an ancestry email from a young woman that said much to her shock she had just found out her father wasn’t her father. They had all placed their dna in ancestry on a whim and low and behold she matched not with him but matched to my kids as first cousins and two of my cousins as second cousins. Even her mother didn’t know. It was like setting off an explosion in her family. Her mother had only dates my brother for a few weeks. Then went straight into a relationship with the man she would marry and assumed was the father of her daughter. By all accounts he has been an amazing father. She is an amazing and educated young woman. Our family feels like we won the lottery. Her mother feels very guilty. I keep asking how her mom is and telling her to please tell both parents how grateful we are. Hoping to offset their pain. In the meantime we just all keep reassuring her how lucky we feel as a family to have her.

I found my biological father after 27 years of looking. I am truly thankful that I took the chance to find him. I have a wonderful relationship with him! I was so scared of finding my dad for so many years... I remember thinking that “if I find him there’s a good chance that I won’t like what I find“. I believe most of us would feel the same way. The fact is I was raised by my stepfather and didn’t find out that my stepfather was not my biological father until I was about 10. I’m 39 now. I want to say thank you so much for this wonderful story. You have a wonderful voice and you have the gift of storytelling. Being a godly man doesn’t hurt! I'm adopted, as an infant, and Ancestry DNA helped me find my biological father! I didn't renew my heritage.com site so for all I know my birth mother is also waiting. I just met my bio dad, so my birth mother is a little too much for me right now. I can't advise you about hat to do, but I'm so happy that this DNA stuff is solving many hurt adoptees out there now, it's science at it's most wonderful!

Thanks for sharing your story. I have a similar one in looking for my bio father. Although prior to finding my bio father, I had to actually go through two other men who were candidates. Did DNA testing with both of them (they were with my mom) and came back as not my bio father. I did a lot of the same type of digging as you did and was persistent. I love hw you working your mom and then talking with bio dad that you could see the pieces falling into place. I am like you in that I was not looking for a "dad" so to speak. My solace is in finding him and finally getting the truth about my coming into existence. I was not sure what to expect going forward in terms of any type of relationship. But he and his family including 6 new siblings have all been very welcoming and accepting of me and so have many extended family so I am just going to roll with it and enjoy it. The latest thing to have happen is I found another child that my bio father did not know he had. So I got to call him with the news that he has another daughter. He has taken it all pretty well.

Amazing story! For a moment, when you were listing all the ways/attempts you’d tried to contact your biological dad, I though you were going to say he got spooked and never replied... but I’m glad that you did speak to him, and his family. I hope you’ve heard from him again since.

I love your story. You tell it with humor. When I found my dad, my half sister wasn't too friendly. She handles his affairs and I never was allow to talk to him. She told me she wasn't sure she wanted another sister. I became emotional and began to cry. I hung up the phone. I searched my whole life for him and it wasn't good. Maybe if I had talked to her in a humorous way it would have been different. Who knows. But you know how girls are. We cry all the time.

That's great you found him. At least he knows he has a son that he didn't know he had. My husband who will be 70 in a couple weeks, never knew who his father was but ancestry, com helped him find his bio sisters, brothers, and finally found out who his father was after all these years. He is thrilled to have found his bio family. Years of heartache finally healed. Don't give up trying to get to know him. It's important. You probably look like him.

I hope my ex-wife is as lucky as you are. She got pregnant when she was a teenager. Her parents encouraged her to have the baby, they're Catholic, and put it up for adoption. She never saw her baby. It was immediately taken from her at birth. All she was told was that it was a beautiful boy. She was 14 then and is now 57. All those years she has wanted to find her son and say she was sorry. I hope and pray one day her dream will come true.

I found my biological fathers family on ancestry last year. My biological fathers sister came up as my #1 relative. I've always known who they were. Unfortunately my happy ending stop there. Even though I have a wonderful relationship with my Aunt. My biological father wants nothing to do with me. I've never meant him or spoken to him. People ask, Does it hurt your feelings about your father? Absolutely! But I've learned to move pass that. It's a hard pill to swallow ( at first) knowing a parent just out right rejects you, but you can't let it consume you. It's taken sometime to move on but I got one of the worlds greatest Aunts ever out of all of this. There is nothing I would change, because even in my heartbreak. I got the most lovingest, compassionate, caring Aunt I could wish for. I love her to pieces for accepting me when my father wouldn't. I love my Aunt, she was what I was missing my whole life.

Lizzie BordenSin I’m sure the main reason he doesn’t want to meet you is either he’s afraid of any financial back support if you were in any government aid (which I don’t know if it would be)... I’d i was you, I’d “accidentally bump into him” or have your aunt invite you to a family gathering and casually talk to him before revealing to him who you are :)
