BMW has had an amazing legacy and history in the automotive world. Today I hop in an F80 BMW M3 with over 500HP and see if these cars have gotten too big and bloated for their own good compared to the old days of the BMW E30,E36 M3, and E46 M3. I also make some in depth comparisons to the 335i and E92 platform compared to the F80 with the S55 engine instead of the N54/N55. What was it like to drive? Let's find out. Thanks for watching!

Gabriel lopez idk if it true or not but my buddy that works at Wolfsburg for VW says the electronics and wires are treated with a coating for the extreme cold and slushy weather but here in the states where it can get much hotter than in Europe it releases a smell like crayons where as Mexican sourced parts for VW don’t smell like crayons

@@Ethan007Hacks yup, there is tons of early 2000s Boras, jettas and golfs in my town and every single one is the same. Some people go as far as buying about 15 of them 'little trees' air freshners and use them all at the one time but it still smells like crayons 😂😂

People talk bad about the S55 because of sound, and yes at times it does sound raspy and certain catless exhaust make it sound worse, but stock or with the right exhaust it is deep and unique. The S55 engine makes the car feel special, it's aggressive and rough, makes driving the car a lot more of an occasion. The E46 S54 engine was raspy as well but people grew to love it, I think it's the same with the S55, after you've driven it, you grow to appreciate it.

I own 15 m4 manual and love it. I feel very connected with the car. Had many cars in the past. I'm married with a kid. I'm pushing over 500 as well and for daily it's perfect and plenty. Performance. Comfort. Looks. Big trunk.

Mr. Rager i think the m2 is supposed to kinda me the replacement for the 1m which has turned into an appreciating asset and it also coincidentally harkens back to a smaller m3 as well like the e46’s/e36’s.

Is a change in naming convention. Before it was odd numbers per car size which then had every body side ie 1 series had coupe hatch back & convertible. Same with m3 etc. They have now switched out so that the 2 doors are the evens ie 2, 4, 6 8 and the odds are the four doors ie 1 3 5 7. In answer yes the m2 is the replacement to the 1m

I’d say BMW has definitely improved when it comes to building M Power cars but I just feel like the special something that BMW’s used to have isn’t there as much, dunno if it’s just me, don’t get me wrong they make beautiful cars and they are absolute beasts of a machine but that feeling I got sitting in the back of my dad’s e46 isn’t there, no hate on the brand and in fact quite the opposite, love the brand and their journey to where they are. Let me know your thoughts.

I think they got lost in the idea of being some kind of luxury brand as well. Simply put, there is nothing too luxurious about these bmws. As someone who had a fully loaded X5, Mercedes is king of German luxury right now. BMW seems to have an identity crisis. Can’t fail to mention that the M cars are wildly overpriced for what you’re getting. These are just my opinions. I just don’t have the love for the brand that I used to.

Sheldon Ross My X5 needed a new wheel bearing and they wanted 2k to fix it. I sent it in and when I went back they handed me a bill for nearly 4K. That’s when I traded it in on a Cadillac. However I think Cadillac has some serious issues right now as well.

@@mattb4924 not true at all. Those engines are known to be pretty damn reliable. Here in Germany it is the most used track car and alot of them have 100k+ track miles on original engines. Maintenance is key with these cars.

Great video David! Apparently the S55 engine in the F80 M3 and F82 M4 uses Mitsubishi turbochargers. To get the typical 'six cylinder' sound - the single turbo conversion setup can make it sound more like a Supra

I hate to say it but I have to go with the F80. I love the old M3’s but it’s something about the F series that makes them so much fun. Then you factor in the interior and it definitely takes it over the top. I think that there’s a level of comfortability, along with the power that the previous generations just can’t touch. Though I think it is cooler just to say you like the old ones better, F series gets my vote. Side note, not a fan of the G series!

The E92 M3 with the V8 will always be my fav car. But the new M3s do look pretty cool. I do like how they sound also, unlike the popular opinion people have on the sounds of this new M3. I would love to see a crazy modded M2. I feel like that would be the new generation M3 with its smaller size (fun Bmw, all around package, daily driver + sports car).

I’ve tried a few different tuning platforms on my f80 comp, imo these things are best (in terms of driveability) when they’re on stock tune with exhaust and intake for sound only.

The one reason why BMW didn't fit a manual transmission because it couldn't keep up the rpm to torque output the engine produces. The transmission in this car can determine what rpm to optimize the torque at any given moment this in turn allows the perfect power and torque delivery to the final drive without losing so much within the acceptable rpm. This system also reduces strain on viable drivetrain components.

testdrove a m140i (2016) a week ago and holy mother of god it was something else. affordable, manual, civilised looking fun with room for luggage and a decent and a liveable fuel consumption for daily driving. for sale for almost 55k USD (476k NOK as im in norway) so thats actually pretty reasonable when it comes to new cars. imo the most slept upon modern bmw in the same price range as a clean e46 m3 too bad it looks a bit too boring
