As far as the 757-300, I've got nearly 1,100 hours of pilot in command time on this version of the 757. The other 7,679 hours of 757 time were flying the -200 over the course of a ten year period. I have to say, both are wonderful airplanes and as far as the length, it's really hard to distinguish between the two in terms of flight characteristics. When the -300 is heavy, it doesn't have quite the climb performance as the -200, but once level at cruise altitude, mostly indistinguishable. Now in turbulence, the -300 is nicer, no doubt about it. It just seems to take it better; it's more flexible. Also, in a crosswind landing, the -300 is very nice because the rudder is so far back there, it seems quite a bit easier to de-crab; there's just less pedal effort to produce the desired yawing movement. I almost forgot, there's some avionics and cockpit creature comforts I liked better than the -200s that might seem trivial to some people, but I liked them. As far as how the folks in the back liked it, well, I hope they do, but lot of that depends on how nice the flight attendants are, the service, the food, if you're on time, etc. Whether it's good or whether it's bad, well, that can go a long way towards the overall experience to the point that their not really thinking about the length of the airplane anymore.

The 757 is a great airplane. Every time I've flown on one, it seems it has a gentle take-off without a scary vertical, hold-onto-your hats, feeling. It's just a nice lift-off with a moderate climb. I tend to agree that an updated 757 or similar design would be good for Boeing. For a long time, it was the most fuel-efficient jetliner in the skies. What did Boeing have to replace it? I think their thinking was the Max-10 would be the answer, which would have been accurate at the time.

One memorable point of my career was I went to Seattle with my 757 fleet manager to pick up a brand new 757-300. Boeing really gives customers the royal treatment when you bring the big check.
@mikeab934 жыл бұрын
@col loc you're absolutely right. Boeing threw away a perfectly good aircraft. And, its performance is outstanding.
@steinwaldmadchen4 жыл бұрын
@col loc You definitely miss a few points: 1. Majority of 757 is 752, and majority of 752 flights were short haul, which A321 or 739 can more or less takeover. 2. There were more than enough 752 left for TATL routes once they're replaced. 3. 753 had the lowest CASM back then, but lack of range and relatively long turn over time preventing it from gaining traction. 4. Asian, meanwhile, would go for A300/A310/A330 anyway (now 787 as well), because of cargo. 5. 911 was never helping either. 6. No one would keep a line just to hope for future demands. Or in other words - for Boeing, net profit for producing 737 in mass for 20 years and revisit MoM with cleansheet may outperform keeping 757 and producing a few every year. Same for Airbus' A380.
@steinwaldmadchen4 жыл бұрын
@col loc 757 is too heavy as a shorthaul jet, anyway, and I'm not sure why you keep on saying A321/739 is smaller than 752 when some airlines essentially configure similar seat count on the former two. To any airlines the capacity difference is way smaller than you think. nvm, let’s go back to 753. 1. While 757/767 were highly popular in Europe and America, it’s hardly the case in Asia. Japan, Korea and Taiwan are isolated in terms of land transport, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia are popularized country with numerous islands, and a few more with unreliable or nonexistent infrastructure. As neither can take the LD-3 container effectively, they would either purchase A300 derivatives or abuse longhaul aircraft for shorthaul, after all they can’t make 2 longhaul roundtrips anyway. The only exception is Japan with their 767s, but partly to please US and support local suppliers involved. But now they don’t have to - 787 fulfills both criteria without compromising cargo hold. 2. Short of range is what prevents airlines from ordering 753. Longer turnaround time have smaller effect on longer routes, as long as it can do 2 roundtrip. But 753 can’t do TATL. In a world of deregulation and fragmentation, large shorthaul jet isn’t a good idea. I don't know why.......762 is not that popular anyway, a TATL 753 could better fill that gap. 3. But just like NMA vs A321XLR, some legacy carriers may found 767 better suit for a premium heavy config. 4. Meanwhile, seems like the engines is a big question - PW1000G inadequate, GENx too much, and UltraFan isn’t there. But A322 would more or less face the same problem anyway.
@steinwaldmadchen4 жыл бұрын

I was a structural engineer on the team that installed the retractable tail skid on the 757-300. The 757-300 for a long time was the most efficient airplane available as measured by Cost per Available Seat Mile (CASM). It has only recently been supplanted by the A321LR according to Arkia which operates the type. It proved to be a very good replacement for the Northwest/Delta DC-10s which were primarily used to fly to Hawaii. The 757-300 was essentially a victim of the 9/11 crisis as the airlines who would have otherwise bought the airplane to augment their existing fleets of 757-200s were not in a position to do so. Boeing had averaged 40 orders and 45 deliveries per year in 2000 and 2001. The 757 only received seven (7) orders after 2001.

I rode on the 757-300 several times. Boarding is an experience. When you enter from the boarding doors ahead of row 12, it looks and feels just like any other 757. Then you turn right and say, "Wow, that's a long aisle." You keep moving past the first overwing exit, the second set of doors, underneath the overhead rafts, and then you come to your first mystery: a second set of window exits, but this one with no wing. Turns out the 757-300 is so long that Boeing was required to add another set of overwing exits, but there's only one wing, so they installed the airliner equivalent of a suicide door. Airlines don't mind because they can upsell the exit row seats. As you pass the 12th set of doors, you realize that you're back in first class somehow. The airplane is so long that it has actually looped back around on itself. You make your way back down the aisle and finally find your seat: 137A. That's when you look up and realize what a lucky SOB you are. There's another 2/3rds of a plane back there.

I've flown on a -200 series a few times from Atlanta to Costa Rica, and despite being shorter than the -300, it still took much longer for the flight crew to perform meal service than on most other planes of comparable length due to the single aisle configuration. Another downside of single aisled planes is not being able to get to a lavatory when meal service is being performed due to the aisle being blocked by food carts and crew. At least on wide-bodied aircraft you can go out the other side (if you're sitting in the middle section).

The 757 design was originally known at Boeing as the 727-300. United wanted a longer 727 in the 1970's, but Boeing created a 727 fuselage with a new wing, high-bypass ratio engines, and a new FMS cockpit. That is what the 757 is.

I don't know just how accurate this is but I recall reading on an online commercial airline pilot's forum that pilots much preferred flying the Boeing 767 as opposed to the Boeing 757. The pilots stated that the Boeing 707 flew like a dream compared to the DC 8's. One thing they did like about the DC 8's was the fact that they are a very rugged airliner and so solidly built. I sadly never got to fly on the 757-300 which was retired in March 2020. But I'm familiar with the configuration and the downfalls. The experience is a bit lacking for the passengers seated in the exit rows. The jumpseats for the flight attendants are located directly in front of the passengers, and unavoidably you are knocking knees with the working crew. The both the 757-200 and 757-300 have this, but the -300 has an added exit with an extra jumpseat located uncomfortably close to that passengers in the exit row behind the wing. As mentioned, the food and drink service can take an exceptionally long time, especially on boozy flights like Las Vegas or the Carribbean destinations. It could be up to 45 minutes before the flight attendants get to your row. However, the design of these aircraft is much more comfortable compared to a 737 or airbus. The Galley's are larger and can accommodate a much bigger service and not be lacking any space or storage. The cabin is wider than the 737 which lends to a less cramped feeling, especially in the lavatories, seats and galleys. The aircraft also has much better power and performance than a 737 or Airbus 321, getting you up to cruising altitude much faster and to your destination much faster.

I flew on the 757-300 and 757-200 both on Delta. I personally liked my experience on the 757-300 more because Delta placed newer seats, IFE screens, and a new bathroom in the plane, but it took forever to board. When I was on the -200, it took much shorter to board but the plane was not nearly as nice. On the -300, it was really cool to walk to the back of the plane because there is a galley towards the rear, but that is where the -200 would normally end, so you could see the extra seats on the -300. It looked like someone stuck a tail onto the -200.

I believe I use to fly the UAL 757-300 quite often from Newark to LAX (or may have been JFK to LAX when UAL still served JFK). UAL had a flight that was almost entirely Business Class, I forget what they called it, but it had a small 1st cabin up front, and the tiny rear cabin was economy, the entire remainder of the plane was business. I really enjoyed those flights in business class, and it was very easy to get upgraded as a premier.

Was flying the -300 and loved it. Service with United Airlines was everything but slow. It handled the turbulences over the Rockies nicely and at SFO the pilots performed a kind of a short field landing. All very impressive without any unneccesary belks and whistles. Torsten

worked on both as a Crew and Amazing plane to fly on, ok indeed service is a nightmare on them, but we had a couple overpowered ones, and god where they fast on take off. and the gadgets they had. as the 300 were that long, they had installed a camera on the senior's PA station, so once one started to speak, your face would appear on all screens hung from the ceiling, and remember having it storage spaces in the most strange places on board. really every MM was used/is used on them. OCR, rest lol they were dangerous and most uncomfortable to rest in let alone to get in and out. And 20 years later still remember the day we overran in EHAM and ended up nose down tail up in the grass. Got fixed and 6 weeks later she was back up and flying again, got sold and still flying for NZRAF.

Both the 200 and 300 variants of the 757 are excellent as a passenger. They handle turbulence extremely well, are spacious, quiet, and really awesome during takeoff and landing. It'll be a very sad day when they go out of service.

German Leisure Airline Condor is the perfect example for the Aircrafts Usecase. Transporting 275 People from Frankfurt to La Palma Island in the Canaries is what this plane was built for (the Runway is very sloped and only 2000m long. Getting an A330 or a 767 in there is almost impossible (although Tui has flown there with a 787). And because of the vast amount of passengers and the flight time, Boarding Time is not such a big issue because these jets are mostly flying two rotations a day on max.

I’ve had the opportunity to fly the 300 on at least 2 occasions. The routes were DEN-ORD and SFO-DEN. Both flights had only about a 50-60 percent load factor, so I didn’t notice the long service and boarding times. The -300 flights were with United, and the cabins were a little tired looking. On my DEN-ORD leg I was sitting in the aft economy section, and I remember a rubber trim piece on the overhead bins suddenly falling down. Nonetheless I really enjoyed the -300. I’ve been partial to the stance of the 757, and I felt privileged to fly on such a unique and rare version of the 57.
@maxmaxmaxmaxmaxmaxmaxmaxmax14 жыл бұрын
“Could we see a 757X?” No, we won’t. The tooling for the 757 was destroyed and the cost of restarting production is cost prohibitive for the potential sales they may have. It is much more likely to see a 787 variant or 797 that replaces the 753.
@colinw72054 жыл бұрын
The 757-300 was basically two engine DC-8-63 with better STOL capabilities than the latter. Funny how it found a home with Charter/Leisure haulers like Thomas Cooke(RIP) and Condor. Airlines concerned with hauling the greatest number of people with no care about the additional cargo capabilities that come with regularly scheduled flight.

I‘ve flown on a 757-300 operated by Condor. I wouldn’t say that boarding or service took significantly longer compared to probably a a321. Anyway the aircraft could‘ve still used an update of the cabin, but that was most likely due to it‘s age. The flight experience though (including service and boarding) wasn‘t bad at all.

Yes I have already flown on the 757-300 and it was the best flight in my whole life. It was a night flight out of Frankfurt to Palma de Mallorca in a Condor 757-300 and it was on my 18. birthday the day itself was unforgettable but the condor crew did everything to make it even better. It was such an experience to fly on this aircraft on that day and it was so exiting to be in the cockpit look around and asking all questions an avgeek could think of. Not the aircraft itself, it’s engines and the cockpit is awesome, the memories which I have about this aircraft are as well. Personally my favorite aircraft next to the 747-8i

I use to work for ATA. We were the North American launch customer for the type and bought 10 of them. Personally, I did not like the 757 300. It was just too long and took forever to do a service - and our Hawaiian service was very extensive and demanding. It also had a weird and unsettling wobble in the rear of the aircraft probably due to its length behind the wing.

You’ll find the answer in the range and payload area. I have 5000 plus hours flying both. The 200 was a good 7 hour bird with a decent payload on board and 9 hours was a stretch. The 255,000 pound gross weight 200’s were much better than the 235,000 pound ones. The 300 on the other hand was a good 5 hour airplane with the same general payload and 7 was a stretch. It was suited well for US west coast to Hawaii ops.

I have flown both the 200 & 300. For some odd reason whenever we start the engines on the 300 there is always a strong fuel odor in the cockpit. The 200 does not have that anomaly.

I was a passenger riding in the back part of the -300 cabin one time. I remember that as the airplane maneuvered to turn onto the runway we really got a sense of being swung around as we were at the far ind of the arc of its movement. WHOA! We were really being slung around back there.

Flew the 753 twice a year with Condor from Germany to the Canary Islands and back for over 10 years, she was requested and ordered by Condor just for those destinations. Passenger comfort is okay but not great, that depends on what the airlines decide to have crammed into it, not on the airframe as it is. It flies like a charm and is reliable as gold. The loaders had a pun about her, „everything‘s got an end, just the 753 does not“ meaning the depth of the luggage holds, fortunately equipped with a loading belt machine, but when this was inop, cheerio.... One of the fine examples where a stretched version is not prone to tailstrike. Imho Boeing would be better off now if they had kept and used the 757 as a base platform for future modifications and dumped the 737 for it, but what do I know...
