The irony, is that a lot of people like Lucas. When Lucas was on Twitch, we would watch videos that members sent in, and critique them. Most people who sent videos in were pretty damn competent.

Lucas will take credit for it, but it’s basically a BCM upper in a cheap lower. Could also be an Anderson with a quality LPK. Not that Aero is high quality, but if you’re coming from 9mm where barrels last forever it seems to surprise you that barrels are consumables on a rifle platform. 5-10k rounds is about all you should expect from a non-chrome lined barrel. Bolts are even more consumable; a mil-spec bolt will last 3-6k on average. If you want longevity, a 9310 bolt and a chrome-lined barrel are a must - and you’ll be replacing the gas rings on the bolt every few thousand rounds, and likely the extractor. Mil-spec .223 is pushing 60k psi - that wears out parts (particularly barrels) fast. I shoot a lot of 3 gun and rifle matches, and I replace my barrel on my main comp gun once or twice a season (I shoot a 416R pencil barrel, which is a softer steel that wears out faster but tends to be more accurate). It’s even worse if you step up to something like 6.5 creedmoor. You just factor it in to your ammo budget. TLDR; for the style of shooting you do you should be shooting duty grade chrome lined barrels. But I can also buy 3-4 Aero barrels for the price of one Criterion. If you shoot ARs in competition you should be able to do basic armorer work like barrel swaps. If you don’t, you’re probably not putting enough rounds through your gun a year to matter.

Solgw has mentioned c158 is actually more easily heat treated properly and c158 being slightly more flexible has actually made it a more long lasting platform on top of being easier to manufacture correctly

Really, you should just be buying the JP enhanced bolt if you put a lot of rounds downrange, especially on the clock. Buy once, cry once with a lot of this stuff. A c158 bolt will on average fail in under 10k rounds - it’s why a lot of guys emergency repair kits include a bolt. The military just has a protective maintenance schedule that replaces parts before they wear out. Uncle Sam often does things for cost reasons more so than reliability as long as reliability can be maintained through the labor of some 19-year-old armorer.

@@ChristopherGoydich-cb6bd as of this video the JP enhanced bolt is actually cheaper than the LMT - around $129. It’s the gold standard for a heavy use AR in my opinion.

I don't care who makes what popular. I can't afford to test till failure so I rely on guys like you, lucas and maybe a few others. I got a few Aero and Psa Ar15s to hold the fort down but I spend 99% of my time/money/ammo shooting pistol for uspsa. FWIW, PSA has a line of uppers that have FN chrome line barrels. Im sure the cheap bcg would be the thing to break in those.

Would really like a BCM. In my country afaik, due to gun licensing laws, you cant buy the upper and lower separately so its gotta be a complete BCM gun, upper and lower. That said Im really interested in an IWI zion for the price point. However since Ben hasnt run a Zion thru its paces (and I think no one has on the internet)might as well just go the safer route and pony up for a BCM. I was considering a complete Aero before but since I need to have the gun last as long as possible, I scrapped that option. Thanks Ben for sharing stuff like this. Really helps poor dudes like me spend our money where its worth it. More power to you.

I think BCM's distribution methodology history of providing crazy number of upper configs probably brought about this evolution over the years. I remember 2009ish they were selling uppers with almost any rail. MI, Troy, Larue, Centurion, DD. So you could poverty out pretty much any lower you could find and slap together something that was the idiomatic "Good Enough"

This is true for sure . The original BCM RECCE 14 came with Centurion C4 or DD Quad Rail . BCM did not even start making rails until years later . BCM Middy Upper with Colt Lower was the first IMO that everyone started using . BCM GUNFIGHTER SERIES in 2013 or so is when BCM started gaining huge popularity. HSP and Larry Vickers also helped with that . LAV used to rep DD and jumped ships to BCM ..

I almost ended up with an Aero lower and BCM upper on my first from the ground up build when comparing features to price. But when Aero had a sale on blem stripped uppers I snagged one of those instead and put on a Faxon pencil barrel. I'm also using their NiB BCG because oooo shiny and after 1500 rounds or so not a single issue. But we'll see how it holds up while I'm on the path to competing in 3 Gun after cutting my teeth on some local matches first.

Generally a fan of Lucas but might be a stretch to say he's the first person to come up with this. I started running nicer uppers on Aero lowers in 2017 and probably been recommending to students and online since at least 2018. To be fair not BCM specifically though, always been aware of them as a quality option but just not what I landed on.

Lucas has been championing the combo for AGES. But his main deal is that he just wants people to get something decent, and TRAIN. He doesn't want people suffering from paralysis by analysis (something I suffer from). I have a Larue lower and a BCM upper, but that's because the Aero lowers were sold out.

BCM was not mainstream until BCM launched their GUNFIGHTER Series . Surely dudes in the know knew BCM was GTG . It wasnt until EAG , HSP and Larry Vickers starting pushing BCM when it became super mainstream . LAV jumped ship from DD to BCM . That's when you saw a huge increase in BCM product . HSP did a damn good job as well . BCM Filthy 14 was another instrumental thing as well . I stopped paying attention to filthy 14 after 50k-ish rounds . It would be interesting to see if Filthy 14 Carbine has been finally retired lol.. I had absolutely 0 clue who BCM was until 2011 when I bought BCM EAG TACTICAL CARBINE. That Carbine came with irons , sling and SF Light from the factory . All I needed was Eotech or Aimpoint . Dudes on the forums have been pushing BCM Uppers and Aero Lowers for a good while. Way before TREX . Lucas was the first video I watched where he actually said it on bigger channel .
