The suit wasn't COBALT BLUE!!! It was actually black. The blue was often used to accent the black. This is the same as with Superman's hair. However, when a new artist started doing the comics, there was a misinterpretation and the artist drew the suit in blue instead of black.
@arpandutta31066 жыл бұрын
Is that true? Wow that's a cool little fact. But do you have any source to link, it would be helpful 😊
@FlippytheMasterofPie6 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure Ditko was actually the one who adopted blue into the color scheme, but it was kind of a gradual thing, where the inky black sort of became less and less prominent. It’s apparent as early as issue 3 (I presume this has more to do with saving ink than any real artistic vision) and then becomes really apparent after issue 20, and Ditko didn’t leave the book until the completion of issue 38. While it’s true that his replacement John Romita Sr would refine and eventually define the solid construction, brighter colors, and less aggressive shading of the character (and, one could argue, Marvel’s house style as a whole) I think the transformation from black to blue is a little more gradual than a lot of people think. But that’s just my impression, looking at covers in my Marvel Masterworks editions-which should be noted are notorious for some more liberal recoloring choices by the restoration team. However, considering the INKS of the drawing are mostly untouched, I think we can still determine what the amount of “black” is based on how much Ditko shaded in the costume.
@InfamousJJ4206 жыл бұрын
I thought that was more so the idea for Spider-Man 2099, who’s entire suit is black, but appears blue due to the lighting in the futuristic city.

My assumption is Steve or Kirby happened to see the costume once or twice, and it subconsciously found its way in their works. As for the merch deal, as the old saying goes "if you can't beat them, join them". Maybe they didn't want a long, dragged out legal dispute and decided it probably be more profitable to just make a licensing deal. Since the deal apparently lasted until at least the 70s, I'd say it worked out.

Ditko's design is original and he deserves credit. Webs on a body-suit alone does not make the Spider-man look. Even if Ditko had seen the suit and did decide to put webs on it as a result, that would've been mild enough to count as inspiration, just as so many early superheroes had capes despite Superman doing it first. The red and black with blue shading and webshooters is a brilliant look.

Well, I talked a few times to Jack at various SDCons, and like most folks when mentioning what a hero wore, the term would be outfit or uniform. But in reference to Spidey, Jack instead uses the word costume, as in Halloween costume. Then there's the fact that most all other superheros were one word names, like Superman, Superboy, Batman, Batwoman, etc., but Marvel instead seperated the name, like the Cooper Costume company did. (Although Cooper just used a space between, without any hyphen or dash.) But note that when Marvel first tried out their version, they were riffing on one of Stan Lee's fave old pulp characters - The Spider. BTW, I'm happy they dumped from the outfit all that YELLOW, which is the color of cowardice.

Possibly when Kirby created his design for Spider-Man, he could have subconsciously taken aspect from the Ben Cooper one? When Lee was not happy with this gave the task to Ditko, and with It a copy of Kirby's as to what he didn't want and from that Ditko could have come up with his own design, Incorporating aspects of Kirby's, as well as his own. This could explain why Kirby feels the need to say "I" created Spider-Man. The few aspects, maybe say, a Spider logo on the chest or the layout of the suit, or even the whole costume was taken from Kirby, and Ditko just drew It apon a slimmer, athletic built character, Instead of the bruting, hero physique Kirby had drawn. It could all be coincidental as well. There are only so many ways to design a spider man. So the Ben Cooper costume may not have even had a relation to the creation of Marvels Spider-Man and for easier legal reasons and to make some money off royalties, struck a deal with Ben Cooper when approached about a costume with a similar design. Either way, If Kirby never took Inspiration or coincidentally took aspects of It, my theory can still hold up to as why Kirby feels he had created Spider-Man

Kirby stated in the TPB reprinting The Fly Comics from the '50's, when he suggested a name for The Fly, to Joe Simon, he originally suggested Spider-man, but they settled on The Fly. Also, Lee in his book Origins of Marvel Comics, he wrote he based Spider-man on a Pulp Superhero, The Spider: Master of Men. Also, Lee later said he also got the idea for Spider-man when he was sitting in his room, and he saw a fly climbing up a window. Jack Kirby related this same account in the introduction of the TPB Book reprinting the mid-1950's The Fly Comics. However, when Lee was later asked about this, he said he couldn't recall saying it? Go figure it!😀😃
@michaelhughes80572 жыл бұрын
Correction. In the Introduction to the TPB reprinting The Fly Comics of the mid 1950'a, when Joe Simon and Jack Kirby were trying to think up a name for a new Superhero @ their Studio, Kirby suggested the name, "Spider-man". They both later decided to name their new Superhero, Tbe Fly because, of course, that's what their new Superhero's costume looked like.
@timsmythfilmsandanimations3 жыл бұрын
I think Stan said he was inspired by a fly crawling up the wall, not a Spider. I have a feeling that Jack probably brought the entire idea to Stan, including the Spiderman logo by Simon. Once Stan found out that the whole idea was taken from the Fly, he took the Kirby pages from Ditko, and they were never seen again. Stan also claimed he searched for an artist to replace Kirby on the project, and picked Ditko, but Ditko was already the artist of that magazine, and was already tapped to do the inks, so that search didn't seem too hard. It could be that Jack was jut too busy, and Stan had to start over, I don't think it was because his hero was too manly. Stan probably did come up with the new plot, which was pretty much the same as the Hulk, and gave a written synopsis to Ditko as the new artist. Kirby did draw the finished cover, but it was based on Ditko's rejected cover. Ben Cooper probably saw an issue of Spider-Man and went to Marvel to make a deal. It is as unlikely that Ditko ever saw one of Ben's costumes as it is likely. So that is a big assumption, as is Kirby who working "maybe" at Ben Cooper's and "maybe" designed the costume. Ditko's roommate claimed that Ditko designed the costume. Joe Simon's, Kirby's, and Ditko's accounts all add up, only Stan's does not match. This is the same answer I gave the other video.
@followthewhiterabbit25493 жыл бұрын
You are right, Jack Kirby triggered the idea of Spider-Man with his character "The Fly" to Stan Lee. Stan Lee always say that he came up with the idea of Spider-Man when he saw a fly on the wall, THAT'S A LIE ! Why not admit that the inspiration of Spider-Man was "The Fly" of Jack Kirby ? In Robyn Snyder's History of Comics, Volume 1, No.5 Steve Ditko said... Stan said Spider-Man would be a teenager with a magic ring which could transform him into a an adult hero... I said it sounded like the Fly, which Joe Simon had done for Archie Publications. Stan called Jack about it but I don't know what was discussed. I never talk to Jack about Spider-Man, so I don't know what his ideas concerning the character actually were. Later, at some point I was given the job of drawing Spider-Man. Why, exactly? Stan and Jack also have to clear that up. he also said... "Who first came up with the specific name, Spider-Man, is for Stan and Jack to resolve."
@EgyptianChiefKeef3 жыл бұрын
@@followthewhiterabbit2549 actually, no, here is what I think and it actually makes a lot more sense. I think stan lee saying he got inspiration from a fly crawling on a wall confused him. Considering that was 50-60 years ago. I think he actually took inspiration from the character the fly and started coming up with names like bug man and mosquito man before settling with spider-man. He went and showed it to jack Kirby knowing he co-created the character, then Jack Kirby made it look like pulp fiction and gave him a web gun to be like his creation. Stan Lee decided to go to steve Ditko instead, together, they made some changes and the character spider-man was born. I think this makes much more sense.

Scott. Obviously Jack Kirby was inspired by the design of the 30's pulp hero Spider costume when designing the Ben Cooper Spider-Man costume in the 50's, which in turn inspired Steve Ditko in the 60's, and since Ben Cooper didn't want to admit ripping off their costume in the first place, they agreed to produce the Marvel Spider-Man costume instead of putting Marvel to task for ripping off their rip-off. Obvious. Duh. Way more plausible than your "webs are an obvious design element for a spider-based hero" argument. JK, of course. Great video!

You are right. He only had blue as shading, which eventually evolved into being his actual costume.
@sebastianmaregatti6 жыл бұрын
Darkhearst Toys yep a similar problem like the hulk skin tone,the marvel printers couldn’t handle a pure black colour until the late 80s which is why Spider-Man 2099 also looked like blue
@205mohamad6 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Maregatti well that isn’t totally accurate, the reason Spider-Man 2099 was blue was because it was supposed to contrast the city lights, that’s why it’s the black is usually colored by blue. I know with the 60s costume it was definitely meant to be black but cause of shading. My question is how come Black Bolt and Black Panther were able to be completely black (for the most part) then?
@milesparker5576 жыл бұрын
@@205mohamad maybe because they had black in the name people never had any confusion with the color of their costume even though black panther did look awfully blue sometimes.

@Phantom92526 жыл бұрын
I actually saw this a few years back when I got into a flame war with someone who pulled this out as 'proof' that Stan Lee deserves no credit for creating Spider-Man. Part of his larger point that Stan is 'a charlatan who stole credit.' He pretty much thought only Jack Kirby created anything ever. The two outfits are barely anything alike anyway, we only see similarities because we are looking at them with hindsight. Marvel should totally bring back the Marvel/Ben Cooper hybrid Spider-Man design for a villain or something.
@Phantom92526 жыл бұрын
@Non-Ugandan Knuckles Hey look, there's another one. It never fails. Mention Kirby and these cultist conspiracy theorists come out of the woodwork. Kirby was amazing and did do a lot and I hope someday we can discuss him without having to deal with petty assholes like you.
@DeanJ20096 жыл бұрын
@Non-Ugandan Knuckles nah there's way more to Spider-Man's success than the super hero premise. Peter Parker his life and the other character's in it is as important if not more than the powers/costume.

I remember as a kid I had the original Spider-man #3, and in that issue his costume was red and purple. Also, years later, I bought Strange Tales Annual #2, 1963 Issue, where Spider-man and The Torch first teamed up. In that story, his costume was colorful red and purple. In later appearances, of course, it was red & blue.

Based on a ton of interviews, I believe Jack created the look, but drew him way too muscular, so Stan went to Ditko. Also, I wouldn't believe Stan Lee. Stan at some point said, he created Captain America, which he didn't, nor did he come up with any of the scripts and stories for the FF - the book that MADE Marvel in the 60s, or Thor, X-Men, or any of the others. All he did was "fancy up" the dialogue.
