My Kink is Karma is very much a song about enjoying the downfall of a shitty ex. The petty satisfaction of watching your ex be miserable, getting into trouble, having a financial crisis, getting called out for his behavior. It's SUCH a good, song and honestly for me a bit healing. I have an abusive ex who ended up getting arrested, having a lot of health issues, and family problems, and being roasted for his behavior. The emotions in the song are REAL for me lol
@liaspooked49802 ай бұрын
Yeah but what I also love about that song is the underlying message of how her "obsession" with his downfall isn't all that healthy for her, either. I think that especially becomes clear through the lyrics "you thinking I care", which she sings as she lists the different ways his pain brings her joy. It's clear that, although the narrator says she is over him, she isn't, and still clearly "cares" about his life, even if only in order to get enjoyment out of the show. I mean, this is pretty clear in general, considering she is paying so much attention to his life - which a person who truly has gotten over someone wouldn't do. I also really feel like this message is driven even more home in the music video, in which he is dressed like a clown, but so is she - she might get satisfaction from observing his ruin, but she will only find peace not through his karma, but by eventually moving on. That being said, what makes My Kink is Karma so fun (and also empowering in an interesting way) is that it is not about being healthy and "over it all". His relationship with her was extremely toxic, and so of course her coping mechanism is going to have some toxicity as well. It is not about arriving at that point where you are healed from a bad partner and are ready to move on - it's about when you are still in the midst of that slow and arduous process... and when you are in that process, your ex's suffering is so, so satisfying!

You need to listen to the entire Chappell album, it's lowkey so fire. I got obsessed to it in just few days, but one thing: the album kinda hits different if the listener is queer because the album talks about the queer experience and that way queer people can relate to it really well. I'd love to see our LaLaLaa do an album reaction here!

If you look at her earlier performances, you can see how much she's improved vocally. She's able to run around and dance while singing so much better than she could before. I've heard that she's done vocal cardio training, so that's probably why she's improved so much

Yes she is the #1 writer on her songs! She collaborates with her producer Dan Nigro (also Olivia Rodrigo’s producer) but she comes up w the melody and lyrics and everything :) Also she tried to make it in the industry for like 10 years before even getting to make this first album, so she spent a lot of time mastering her craft. Something we don’t see a lot w the immediacy of the internet + self publishing nowadays.

In the rest of the album, watch her shift into the styles of Chrissie Hynde, Dolores O'Riordan, Stevie Nicks and more all while remaining totally original. Then there's the influence of LCD soundsystem with the DJ style dance music with slow build ups, explosive moments, unexpected, ironic and totally authentic lyrics-- just fun fun fun.
