Did someone say VNAV? - CRJ Descent & Approach - Microsoft Flight Simulator

I've been flying the CRJ for a couple of months but I've never tried its built-in VNAV coupling option. Let's see if it's any good.

Just remember to disengage VNav before selecting APP. The GS isnt particularly friendly if you still have VNav in.

6:19 The CRJ has no way of knowing that there is ice on the wings. The ice detectors just in front of the main door and service door are detecting ice giving you the Ice caution message. When this is active wings and cowl anti-ice must be selected on. This will turn the caution to an advisory message on ED2 until the ice detectors no longer detect ice. The reason it is red on the anti ice synoptic page is because wing anti%ice should be selected on when the Ice caution is posted. Here is when to use anti-ice in the CRJ: On the ground, below 10C with contaminated taxiways/runways, precipitation, or low visibility cowl anti-ice should be selected on. On the ground, below 5C with contaminated taxiways/runways, precipitation, or low visibility wing anti-ice should be also selected on, except when type II, III, or IV anti-ice fluid has been applied.. then only turn it on just prior to thrust application for takeoff. In the air, below 10C TAT and above -40 SAT in visible moisture or low visibility, cowls on. The same goes for wings unless you are above 230kts then it is not required. Finally in air with Ice caution both cowls and wings must be selected on regardless of temperature or airspeed.

This is video is just what I was looking for as I was sitting on the fence deciding if I should get the Aerosoft CRJ700 from MSFS market place and that "coupled VNAV option" is what got me convinced...I am currently flying the PMDG DC-6 on MSFS, very superb, but lots of manual work on using 1950's technology to navigate and lateral and vertical navigation all manual calculations...lol just waiting for the PMDG NG3 737 to release and I am set to fly almost fully automated with autoland..thanks for sharing and "Mabuhay from one of your kababayan"...I have liked and subscribed

Salamat! Glad to see a fellow Filipino, too. Enjoy the CRJ! Yes, definitely agree. It's currently the best modern airliner we have for now in the sim. Most probably the 737 will take that spot when it's released, but no one knows when that will happen.

When I saw this feature in the update change log, I was super excited. Takes the load off during descent...the thing that I hated though was when I did a full idle descent, the plane almost slowed down to stall speed. Could it be for the VOR that the chart was saying "below 6000ft"...seeing as the 6000 was below the line?

Ah yes, I don't think the CRJ descents at flight idle for the most part. I stay around 60-70% N1 most of the time. And about the below 6000, that's a very interesting POV. Tbh I don't think it does, but I'll have a look to be sure. Thanks for the inputs!

Hi CG...your vids show the amount of time and study you put into your flying, Good job, and thx much. Question: You seem to be the most informed on Pilot2ATC. I've purchased it and am learning it now. Does P2A get updated with the latest AIRAC cycles like SimBrief and Navigraph? I find that quite often Simbrief matches Navigraph, but then P2A does not match them with 100% accuracy. How would you deal with that situation...how would you ensure that the SIM (MSFS) is flying the exact same path as the other 2 tools? Thx in advance.

Hi John, thanks for the kind words. If you have a navigraph subscription, the fms data manager updates apps with the latest airac cycle, and yes p2a gets updated as well. In addition, there is a navigraph beta for msfs to make sure the sim and all your 3rd party apps have consistent nav data. The mods list link in the video description should have some links to navigraph beta for msfs, iirc.

Assuming that you are using Amazon Polly voices for Pilot2atc, how did you get the communications with other traffics? By default it's a single conversation beetwen you and the ATC...

Yes, it is a singe communication. Atc mostly works you around other traffic (telling you to hold short, go around, etc).

Hey Clumsy, I noticed you used to use X Plane 11 as well. As another former X Plane 11 user, how would you compare the two sims in their current condition? With the upcoming DX12 update and the VR implementation in MSFS I can't see any reason to go back to X Plane 11 anymore. Looking forward to your next upload!

The advantage that X-Plane has is more variety of high-quality study level payware (and non-study level) and better performance.

Great points guys! Yes, for hardcore simulation of complex systems XP still takes the cake. For the overall immersion factor, though, I definitely go with MSFS.

@@FlyIslandGuy The performance point you made will soon change with the upcoming DX12 update that will soon be in closed beta. As for payware that will increase naturally with time, but there are already a ton of community made mods that improve the default aircraft to almost study level and also a bunch of good freeware aircraft.

Great Video CG, Question, I have coupled the VNAV in the EFB, but I don't get the FM1 PATH in green that can be seen at the 10:49 mark of the video. I get the PATH in white but not the green one. Any idea as to what I may have set up incorrectly?

Thanks! Hmm, PATH in white means it's armed but not yet active. Are you still on cruise and maybe top of descent isn't reached yet? Or maybe you are too high or low from the calculated vertical path. If so, you'll need to manually catch up via VS before PATH becomes active (goes green). You can look for the white snowflake in the PFD to know if you are too high or too low.

@@TheClumsyGeekGaming thanks, for the quick reply. I am in cruise just before the TOD. I set my Altitude to a lower value and then just before TOD hit VNAV. The plane never descends, even post the TOD. I'll keep trying and always appreciate your helpful videos. Thanks for those.

Hej Clumsy and community! Which is currently the best ifr aircraft in MSFS? I really want to spend time only if the plane works. I tried default TBM with flight model tweaks and WT G3000 but when it couldn't hold a heading I was frustrated. Is the CRJ ready or should I wait for PMDG?

Have you watched Squirrel's TBM 930 IFR Landing tutorial, it helped me a lot with the standard Garmin, and it's nearly the same for the G300 mod. If an airport doesn't have consistent waypoints for the landing, I set one manually before the flight on the flight plan and I usually pick up the localizer and it locks on Using the approach/runway selection I don't bother with much, but I look through to see if there is a decent one

I definitely recommend either the CJ4 mod or the CRJ. These are the most reliable when it comes to IFR flights. Still not perfect, but gets you where you need to go. Enjoy!

From what I've seen, yes some of the newer models do, although most don't.
