I just picked up the comand encounter, I needed a watch for work and cheap. Started cheap cheap timex entry watch and upgraded with indigo for 50 bucks ( I need 24hr watch for railroading , Just started out in my career so money is tight ). Been a year with my expedition and just seen the comand encounter with indiglo and has a digital display and a stop watch and the water resistance and shock so it hit all the boxes for me for my job. I didn’t realize it was similar to the g-shock but in canada it’s more expensive to get a comparable g shock so i’ll be wearing this for a bit until I decide to upgrade after wear and tear from work

They released a UFC variant with the word "UFC" instead of Shock. The watch looks really cool, I don't have any problem with the G-Shock similarity.

Love Timex and always will. As long as they always say Timex on the dial, I'm fine with the homage watches, they make affordable quality watches and their history has proven, they have a legion of fans and I for one will always be one of them

The UFC variant of this Timex Command Encounter looks actually pretty cool and and they put "UFC" instead of "Shock" on the dial's base. But: Would I pay +$140 for it? Definitely not.

I'm new to watch collecting and I see this all over the place and from what I can gather from the community there's two kinds of collectors there's one that likes looks and purpose and there are those who are brand loyalist. There's a lot of companies that make copies of this and that brand on the higher end and I think that's the cater to brand loyalist and they make something that's comparable to High aend luxury watch without taking out a second mortgage. That's my take on the copycats in the market I don't think it's cuz somebody's trying to bite on the style I think just they're taking the style and bring it to the repeat customers. You see the same thing in fashion clothing accessories even perfume bottles. That's the power advertising but for those who have a different taste in a hobby have a different opinion about it.. Just my two cents

I agree and I like timex. Generally their expedition line watches are great. Timex should respect themselves more. Yes, those homage-like designs are popular and sell well but cheapen the brand for short term return. It's perfectly reasonable to be influenced by other designs, but mix in your own creative ideas and improvements. It will pay off in the long term.

I love the Timex Command Encounter! I have smart watches, a great collection of Citizen Promaster Dive watches, Seiko, G Shocks, Timex.. etc. I drive Over-sized HAZMAT loads. I need a real watch that I can SEE in any light without pushing anything. I like Big Hands on a watch. I Love this Timex Encounter watch! I can see it going down the road in the middle of the night! If it's a practical tough watch. I got one for my friend at work. He likes it too! It works!

Yori, every company has copy or have "homage" from each other for years, so it shouldn't be a surprise if Timex has some models that resemble any other company models. In my opinion, who cares, if you like the watch, is your money and you buy it. Anyway, keep up the great work!

Use to be a big fan of Timex Ironman watches but for a while now they have been applying the polarization filter in an orientation that makes the display black out when you wear polarized sunglasses. Not sure why. No G-Shock does this but every Ironman does. 🤷‍♂️

The only Timex I've ever owned was an Expedition Field Easy Reader (T44921) which, though attractive, was a huge disappointment. From day one the Indiglo didn't work. Should've sent it back to Amazon but didn't -- my bad. Only 50 meters of water resistance and no screw-down crown. The crown often gets hung up on stuff (A sleeve? A bump against a wall?) and pulls out which stops the time keeping function (frustrating when you find your watch has been stopped for more than an hour!). So much potential but, as I said, a let down. Happily, that let down has been remedied with a VAER S5 Standard Issue field watch (100 meters, screw down crown, sapphire crystal, 316 stainless steel case) that has now become just about my favorite everyday, grab-and-go.

Also....compairing the timex to a Hamilton the big difference i saw was the Hamilton has twice the power reserve, only 40 hours on the timex vs 80 on the Hamilton...but is that extra 40 hours reserve worth twice the price....not for me..lol

I like that the Timex “shock” is very legible, unlike the Casioak. Having “SHOCK” on the Timex dial is just wrong. Looks like something you would see on a bad AliExpress copy.

I think homage are great overall for this reason, most can’t afford the 10k watch but 300.00 is obtainable, in addition homage is better than wearing replicas of the real thing.

I agree with your praise for Timex and the Expedition North Titanium automatic field watch etc. BUT, the Casioak G Shock is a homage in it's self, so aren't Timex just homaging a homage so to speak? To be able to afford to be able to develop new designs etc, they need to sell watches everyday, like they did back into the 50's/60's/70's etc. I don't know where I can walk in to a store and buy a Timex these days?

Considering they have been around since the 1870's they should have plenty of heritage designs of there own to re-release. The Marlin is one example that comes to mind.

They definitely have some homages in their lineup. Look at the hand-winds version of their expedition north and compare it to Hamilton's hand-wind Khaki. There's another Expedition that looks exactly like Bulova's hack watch. It's a tough call, though, because a lot of those military/field watches look the same. It's like Flieger watches. Tons of companies make them, but they all look exactly alike.

Honestly though there is a market for homage watches. Such as the Pagani Design moon watch. Based off the Omega. People like the look of the original but cant afford the price tag. So they buy a homage. Honestly i could care less wether it looks like a casioak or a royal oak,.... whatever. You get my point. People are going to buy what they want to buy, we're all apart of the watch collecting community afterall.

They've been doing this for as long as I can remember; this shouldn't be a surprise. The vast majority of their output are essentially fashion watches, just usually more reasonably priced and with a name that has some (very small amount of) heritage. Their bread and butter is just cheap watches; we're lucky we've been starting to get a few gems from them over the recent years. They're no Seiko or Citizen.

Technically almost every wristwatch watch copied round shape of a clock, and those copied sundials. Those that are not round just have more sides than a square. So Cartier Santos is the OG and all other rectangles are just copies. Hexagons and Octagons are just squares with more sides. And ***agons and it is almost a circle (see above). EVERYTHING is a copy of something with a change.

Seiko recently came out with their 'HOMAGE' to the Cartier tank and it looks great. Homage watches are simply an appreciation of an otherwise popular style. Get over it. You like a watch? Buy it. If purchasing an homage scratches your itch... SO BE IT. To each his own.

People will always choose the Hamilton over the Timex because the Timex Expedition North Titanium is unobtanium and has been since it rapidly sold out on its initial limited release. It isn't a product anyone can rely on being available.

Most brands have original design and homage watches. It voices down to whether it looks nice or not at the end of the day. But this 2100 and GBD200/GBX100 combo homage is really uninspiring. To each his own though.

While I can definitely see how those particular examples can be called out as homages I don’t believe Timex deserves the label as a watchmaker. I think we can look at such brands like San Martin or Pagani as better examples of homage brands since it appears the majority of their models are heavily based on those of Rolex, Tudor, and others. Timex has its’ Ironman line, Expedition line, Marlin line along with the Q reissue which have more history behind them the other brands I mentioned.

the aquatimer ist just a standardish compressor case with the same color scheme as the iwc though? The internal bezel, dial layout and hands (even which hand is yellow) are all pretty different, aren't they? The other one, as an "inspired by g-shock" design, i actually almost like more than the original. That one is still too close for comfort and putting the shock there is just plain stoopid imo

Pretty easy to see what they were going for...to price it more expensive was a pretty stupid move though...I agree with most people on here...designs or elements of certain popular designs have been copied by brands for years...Timex have been doing it just like everyone for sometime...take the Timex Mako DGTL another g shock clone without the shock this time...the worst has to be the UFC branded TW2V57200 this clearly aimed at the casioak genta inspired crowd...it's a good looking watch tbf except for the UFC branding but again...the design is just a rip off...like I've always said though...buy what you like and wear it with pride and forget what everyone else thinks...it's your watch for your taste...nothing else matters...

Im unbothered by this. How many luxury watches have aped Gerald Genta designs and charged thousands. If you find it apish or unorigional, dont buy it. I have several day date watches that were not made by rolex because i love the design. None of them say rolex on the dial but they clearly are copies of that design. That is why people buy them. Not everyone can pay 14 grand for a used rolex. If their homage says Gruen or Pulsar or Bulova on the dial then they are not lying about what you are buying.

Aren't "all" watch companies homage companies in a way? There are so many designs you can do, so many colours you can use, at a certain point they are gonna repeat. And of course copying things like shock is too much while copying the rest of the brand.
