The Terminator is a 1984 American science fiction action film directed by James Cameron. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, a cyborg assassin sent back in time from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), whose unborn son will one day save mankind from extinction by a hostile artificial intelligence in a post-apocalyptic future. Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) is a soldier sent back in time to protect Sarah. The screenplay is credited to Cameron and producer Gale Anne Hurd. Co-writer William Wisher Jr. received a credit for additional dialogue.

The first terminator is just terrifying. The tone, score, the lighting and the absence of unnecessary jokes. The 2nd is slightly more lighthearted but it's kept at a minimum and it serves the purpose of John bonding with the terminator. They are just 2 masterpieces. The reason the terminator was not moving fast in the chase after its flesh was burned off, was that its leg was damaged. It was limping, if you noticed it.

While it no doubt loses some speed because the metal 'feet' aren't ideal to walk on by themselves and it rather relies on the flesh feet for proper mobility, most of it is indeed the Terminator's already damaged - As said you quite clearly see it limping earlier when it goes to get in the truck.

And it was basically an Indie film on a shoestring budget. $6.8 Million was peanuts compared to what James wanted to do. But a great cast, sharp cinematography, and a good script made it all work. And I honestly believe that the true mark of a good actor is "can they pull off being a Terminator". Arnie had to utterly stop any and all human reactions and reflexes to sell his character and he did it flawlessly. Robert Patrick pulled it off as well when he portrayed the T-1000 in Terminator 2 (he was so dedicated to the role that he ran 15 miles per day so he could do the foot chases without losing his stoic expression or visibly breathing hard in one take for each scene).

That they didn't include the audio of him actually saying 'John Connor' right after just 'Connor' in this here edit of the video for KZbin doesn't change that. There's even a glimpse of 'John Connor' in the subtitles immediately right after he says 'Connor' in this video (15:09/15:10 - blink and you'll miss it). In any case Arianna mentions 'John' only after that in the video. If this is indeed a non-genuine 'first time watching' reaction afraid you're gonna have to do a lot better at trying to argue that assumption than one mention that isn't even out of place. Same for the other guy talking about Arianna mentioning hitting the press button before Sarah goes through the press when in the film itself Sarah accidentally bumps that press button well before then and again this edit just doesn't show that piece of the movie.

When I first saw this in 1984, the friend I saw it with said he really liked how the attempt to change the future was what actually caused that future (i.e. the conception and birth of John Connor to a Sarah Connor who was prepared to raise John to be the leader of the human resistance) such that time travel didn't create a causality paradox.

Agreed. That is also the reason why classics like this stay classic. And why all but T2, the other sequel movies don't measure up. The effects were on par for those times, but because of a limited budget, the story, acting, and practical effects had to be on point, or as much as possible. Today, all we have is special effects, which aren't special anymore since everyone is doing them. But proper casting, acting, story, and sequences are thrown under the bus. And of course, trying to recapture the genie in the bottle again by rehashing the same story again instead of trying to do something original. T2 ended it perfectly, yet they won't let it rest.

This launched a massive franchise that consists of movies, comics, graphic novels and videogames, including the first person shooter Terminator Resistance and 3D theme park attraction T2: Battle Across Time. This followed Hercules in New York, Stay Hungry, The Villain, Pumping Iron, Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer, though this was the film that launched Arnold Schwarzenegger's career. There are also crossovers with the RoboCop franchise

FUN FACT: Lance Henrikson was originally supposed to play the Terminator while Arnold was considered to play Kyle Reese. When pitching the movie to Hemdale Film Corporations, producer John Daly didn't find the idea scary. So director James Cameron had Henrikson show up to the meeting early dressed as the Terminator (sunglasses, leather jacket, fake cuts), kicked open the door and sat in a chair. Cameron showed up shortly after and Daly agreed to finance the movie. However after Cameron met Arnold, he instantly saw him in the role and cast him instead. Cameron made it up to Henrikson by casting him as a detective in the movie while also casting him as Bishop in his next movie, "Aliens".

You know, after so many viewings it's only just now occurred to me - why did the Terminator crash that car through the police station door? He could have walked over to the inner door and ripped it open. Hell, he could have crashed his arm through the glass, choked the officer sitting there and just climbed through. Why did he bother with the car? I think it's purely a matter of style - despite the Terminators' basic machine nature, it seem they may have personality quirks, such as a flair for the theatrical. 😆
@MandoWookie
@MandoWookie 2 жыл бұрын
If you watch he evaluated the station and entry area, and probably decided that he needed more firepower than what he had on him( the Ar-18 and shotgun he stole) and that walking back in so armed would give them too much forewarning, possibly allowing the targets to escape. Crashing the car through gives him full access, and confuses the response just a moment as it comes across as 'accident' not attack. Almost pans out, he nearly gets them.

If I recall correctly in the novelization; based on the medical records available, SKYNET discovers in a routine autopsy report that Sarah Connor had a leg injury (but did not know the injury was from the explosion of the Terminator) that had been present prior to Judgment Day. So later, when SKYNET sends a Terminator to *change* the past, the Terminator can positively identify Sarah based on that leg injury, because SKYNET thought Sarah got the injury as a child.

Arnold was originally set to play the Kyle character, with Lance Henriksen (Ed's buddy) playing the part of the Terminator. During a pitch meeting with studio heads, Henriksen showed up dressed as the Terminator; in full character. He shocked and impressed them to the point they green-lit the film! But, Arnold decided he wanted the role of the Terminator instead. His agent begged him not to do it. Saying it would destroy Arnold's acting career. Funny how things work out.

In the old days they made movies for the story. Now they make movies to put women in, to put blacks in, to put gays in... and the story is second. Perfect example is Wonder Woman, the first one was made for the story and is one of the best superhero movies, the second one was made by a feminist to show her views, and was the worst piece of garbage ever filmed.

When 'The Terminator' was first cast, Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast as the soldier... Lance Henriksen was cast as the Terminator, an assassin that could blend in a crowd. But after reading the script, Arnold told the director James Cameron that he wanted to play the Terminator... so the concept was changed - Arnold played the 'unstoppable tank' version Terminator... Lance Henriksen became the police detective... and they recast the soldier to Michael Biehn as 'Reese'. Lance Henriksen was later cast as the android 'Bishop' in the movies 'Aliens' (Pt. II) and 'Aliens 3'.
