I have to agree cut your losses with the power company NOW. You can purchase perfectly functional used solar panels for a 1/4 of new prices and go with the eg4 30kwh server rack battery for around $8000 and 3 eg4 6.5kw all in one solar inverter at $1200 each. That will get you started with 3ph power 110v and 220v for $12,000 plus solar panels and interconnects. Shoot, hight estimate $20,000 all complete and no electrical bills to pay ever. You will be lucky to get some wire and a transformer for that type of money going in the direction you're going in. I have a feeling that the extra views from step by step diy solar system install would help pay for part of the solar as well. And possibly free equipment from solar companies they are hungry for youtubers with descent numbers.

For anyone interested the black "finger" at the end of the trencher when lowered to the ground (it has it own hyd cylinder) will scrape the bottom of the trench clean and flat as you are driving along and trenching.

Don't know if this model had it but you can hook a bull nose to the conduit and sorta "plow" it in as you go so you have to worry bout the trench collapsing. It just pulls the conduit in as you go as long as you have it all glued together or use a reel. Minor FYI- before back filling there is supposed to be a RED tape/ribbon laid on top of the conduit so if anybody digs later they know it's a live electrical line.

@@davep6977 The red tape is definitely a thing, but it doesn't help, if oyu do it like they did at our neighbours: everything way to shallow in the ground and no distance between tape and line. The bull dozer shield found both of them at the same time and the street went dark. Power company came out and fixed everything for free, because they quickly noticed, that it was not our fault.

I got a real chuckle out of this one. I’m a former full time electrical contractor (now part time, my day job now is an airline pilot) and when I saw this my first thought was “that’s a hell of a lot of work for one guy”. Pretty much every pitfall I saw coming. I’m sure you learned all of this stuff along the way but here’s a few pointers I learned over the years. Always glue a coupling on the last piece of whatever and tape up over the coupling. That way all you need to do is knife out the tape and you never have to clean tape off the outside of a pipe to stick a coupling on. Never put a piece of pipe in the trench without taping it first. When gluing large pipe, just pour the glue out of the can and use the swab to spread it out. That way you never get a dry joint. When spreading glue, always glue the female side first. That way you can hold the male end off the ground till you’re ready to stab it. You were doing the best you could with only yourself but always have a piece of 2X4 and a hammer at the end of the pipe Incase you have to persuade it in before the glue sets. I’m not sure if it was a requirement or if it was just what you had but we always used the clear glue. Always order 10% over on your material. People usually don’t consider the risers when they measure out a run. The Gallion did a great job of backfilling. That’s a lot of work, especially when you’re doing it solo.

Hey Matt, I’ve been an electrician for 25 years, and a lot of times when we do duct banks we use 20’ sticks of PVC. Less joints and goes pretty quick. One thing though, you should’ve added a red ribbon ELECTRICAL BURIED LINE tape roughly 12” above conduit while back filling. Nice job!

Here the rule is you put in a run of caution tape over the cable run at a certain depth above it...makes it harder to excavate right through cable runs

I can see the trencher makes a cleaner job but I was not expecting a rental for the job. I was required to go down 48 inchess to bury my electric and phone and separate line for a light at the end of the driveway. This was in the woods as well. There was no conduit just a run of underground rated wire the electric company used. Used screenings as a base then the main electric was laid then one foot of screenings and the other separate electric was laid and then more screenings and then the phone line was put in to eliminate noise between the wires. That was about a 350 foot run.

Don't we all "UNDERESTIMATE" how long a job will take. I do remember telling a friend of mine that we could easily change his rear shocks out after work. Well that didn't happen since his rear shocks were rusted to the frame at the connection points. Amazing how long it took to change them after starting... Nothing ever works like we initially think. But persistence will get it done all the same...even if it take two, three, or more time than expected! Thumbs Up!

Always a lot more work and expense than expected seems to be true for all one time projects. I rented a fairly large trencher a few years ago from the orange box store and dug about 60' from my house to my old shop and it was the hardest ground I have anywhere on my property. I would never have done it with a shovel in my lifetime. Thank the Lord for the people who developed hydraulic driven machines!

Three homes ago, I had a 2.5 acre piece of land in Knox county, TN. The drive from my house to the private road was 365', and the road was 600, to a main road. the drive and the road was gravel like yours. After 17 years of raking gravel after a heavy rain, and trying to shovel it out after a snow, I swore to never have a long gravel drive again. My current home in Soddy Daisy, TN is 25' long and takes 5 minutes to blow clean. Thank God for small miracles!

If you take a small sheet of 1/4" plywood and lay it down under where you do your conduit joints, it keeps dirt out of the glue and gives you a flat spot for your glue cans. One of my fav channels!!

Man, does this ever bring back memories! When my late wife and I were getting ready to have electricity hooked up to the house we had moved from town to our property out in the county, I rented a Ditch Witch to dig a trench 200 feet long and four feet deep. We had to allow an extra couple of feet for telephone and cable. Everything went well, the trench was deeper than the electrical company called for but we were happy. Then Mother Nature stepped in to remind us she was still the boss! Before they could deliver the conduit, we had a nasty rain storm come through. The dirt was really sandy and every inch of our trench caved in! So, we had to get out the shovels and re-dig every foot of the trench! We got it done and just in time for the conduit to be unloaded. The power company came out, inspected the trench and the conduit, gave us the okay and we added the conduit for the telephone and cable with enough clearance that the inspectors were happy. Once every inch of power cable, telephone wiring and the conduit for the cable were in place , we buried that whole mess. I learned one nasty lesson from that ordeal. I will never dig another trench until I have everything on hand to finish the job just in case Mother Nature decides to be nasty again!

For your information: Komatsu bought out LeTourneau Company in Longview, Texas. They have added two huge buildings and are building a huge office building in front of the plant. Looks like they like it here in the south. There are only three dome structures left on the property. Two of them were blown down by tornados. Airline pilots often referred to the view from the air as Tit-tee city. LeTourneau was a builder of huge off-road construction machines. Your equipment is middle class compared to LeTourneau's. Not to knock your equipment. Ole "Pop" LeTourneau built road building equipment, Interstate type. I-20 's river bottoms used his equipment to spread the soil for the highway.

True, but trenchers are a one trick pony that's expensive to repair and easy to trash by a bonehead renter or constant use in industry. (literally the definition of "run it into the ground") The whole point of rentals is access to a functional equipment that you need for a single job. Most of Matt's 'stuff' (other than the new sawmill) is pretty universal in that they haul, dig, push or pick things up. He's very good at reviving, maintaining and operating them.

I sold electrical supplies a few years back (McKeesport, Pa). Isn't obscene what they charge for PLASTIC PVC conduit !!! The schedule 80, 3 inch, 36" radius [elephant tusks] were rediculous $$. The electric utility always wants oversized conduit for an easy pull. Actually this is smart as you don't want damaged wire. Always a great video. At 72 I can hardly remember having the energy and strength to do that kind of work. Thanks

Hi Matt. Having come to your channel only relatively recently I must say how much I enjoy your videos. I have gone right back to the begging and am now smack up to date having watched them all! I am fascinated to see that you have to put conduit in for the electric cable. Over this side of the pond only communication cables, fiber optic etc are laid in conduits. All electrical cables are laid straight into the ground, much easier & cheaper. Keep up the great work and lets see the dogs some more. All the best and keep on doing what you are doing. Nice to see your dog out there supervising your work. I was surprised to see what type of conduit you used. When we needed to pull lines at our place we hired a company that had a ditch-witch and a large coil of continuous, large bore pipe. Looking forward to seeing your next steps in this project including the intermediate connections. If possible, please record the process of pulling underground cables. Matt, A few words of advice about running conduit. Since you are a long distance from the last electric pole, good chance the electric company will run high voltage (7,500) from the pole through the conduits and put a step down transformer near where your work building is at. You should check with the electric company to see how many wires they will put in 1 conduit. You may need more than one for the job. They will need 2 hot wires, 1 neutral wire and 1 ground wire ... Also in most areas, conduit has to be at least 3 feet below grade for frost protection and to protect against digging. Before the final layer of dirt is put back in, about 6 inches or so down, you should have Buried Electrical Wires Warning Tape in the trench. This warns diggers about it before they hit it.

Don't forget to put your vacuum cleaner to work and suck a wad with some nylon line in the pipe; then pull your nylon rope. I love the Gallion; takes me back some 40 years. love the Videos.

I HATE watching these Videos because I know all too well the need of another person to help get the job done. I have been in Matt's place all too often so now I try to help others whenever I can, even if they haven't helped me out. Trenching, glueing pipes and back filling trenches takes a lot of time to accomplish. In my state the trench needs to be inspected before backfilling which Matt never did. I hope this doesn't become an issue for him. Thx for the video Matt.

We're about to move to a family owned property, and since I'm the first to pick a spot, I choose the one right along the driveway, with the existing three phase 7200V power feed. I'm going to save a bundle on not laying a new driveway or having electricity brought in.

That's a hell of a project for one guy to tackle. Awesome progress though. Around here, that would likely be a pole-line and overhead conductors, with a pole-top transformer in the yard somewhere. The other option would be direct buried cable and a pad-mount transformer. Underground conduit is a great way to go, gives you flexibility down the road, and storm resistance, but it's expensive. Was this a local code requirement? Great video as always.

Working for the city that I live in... I have spent many day's on a Ditch witch laying pipe and conduit. I have actually got off the trencher while it was trenching and laid conduit behind it. I learned that a trencher can be great in finding buried items...Including...but not limited to... phone cables, Power lines, Cable TV and water mains ETC. On one job we laid 18,000 feet of irrigation in the city's Orange grove...Days and days...Three months on that Job and much glue. And a bad back.:)

Comment from 73 year old electrician. They sell an expansion coupling. You should have put one every 200 ft. It will let it expand and contract with the frost. Was it schedule 80 or 40 ? Was it 4"? Is it for primary or secondary voltage/ You always do a good job. Get a helper.
